Let's pool our considerable collective fb.net knowledge and amass a list of every song Frank does by another artist.

Thanks in advance for your help, everybody. fbc, I know you're gonna be a major contributor here!

Off the top of my sleepy head:

Elvis Presley - Song of the shrimp

The Kinks - Better things
The Kinks - This is where I belong

Bruce Springsteen - I'm going down

Jesus and Mary Chain - Head on

Beach Boys - Hang on to your ego

The Beatles - Wild Honey Pie

The Sir Douglas Quintet -- Sunday Sunny Mill Valley Groove Day

Misc.

Include TMBG tunes from They Might Be Frank Black?

In heaven - I'd consider that a Frank song. Who did it originally?

Who originally did Breathless?

Dan Penn wrote Dark End Of the Street but did he sing it, too? I only know Frank's version, not the original.

Do I have all the HC covers?

Ballad of Lucas McGraw (live once or twice early on the 93 tour), In The Year 2525 (live a few times, done in the middle of the song "Los Angeles" circa late 90s i think), Nightclubbing (FMR '96 radio session.. Frank doing "karaoke" over Iggy Pop song), Crazy Train (a song Frank soundchecks with sometimes over the years), Beat on the Brat (a couple '93 tv/radio appearances), Sheena? (California '02 shows with Grahm Parker)

The song is called "Fear".. but it was the theme song to a TV show called One Step Beyond.

and i don't think those lyrics posted to the Lucas McGraw song match up with the song Frank did.

oh, and another little thing i just remembered (probably not worth counting as a cover) is sometimes during "You Ain't Me" live circa 96, Frank would sing "867-5309" once.. which was an allusion to the song's similarity to Tommy Tutone's "Jenny (867-5309)"

I'd remove Everyone Is Wrong, it's a song written by Lyle, I wound't call it a cover.

What about Ballad of Lucas McGraw, In The Year 2525, Nightclubbing, Crazy Train, Beat on the Brat, Sheena? Were they all done in concert only, and when was that?

Not sure if this one counts.. Pixies rehearsed Apache as the "surf cover" for Bossanova, but switched to (and recorded) Cecilia Ann instead.

Hasn't anyone seen "O Brother, Where Art Thou?"

Sung by the Soggy Bottom Boys and lip synched by George Clooney in the movie.

The traditional one is definitely not the "Constant Sorrow Man" on One More Hit For The Road or SSMVGD. I think it's a mistake and someone assumed that it was that song - if FB has ever actually covered the traditional one, I'd love to hear it!

FB&TC. Oh, it's nothing. Merely the intro to the greatest and best record ever committed to tape in the history of all of taped (or otherwise) musical history in the history of mankind's history ever, that's all.

Now quit buggin' me. I'm trying to watch the football game.

As far as Snake Oil goes, I can use some help too. I checked the Snake Oil Liner Notes thread and didn't have any luck. In addition, I have been able to find other tunes on Google with the same name but the lyrics are different. Are we sure that this is indeed a cover? Thanks.
Daisy Girl Posted - 01/08/2007 : 11:23:46
In the Year 2525 was written by Rick Evans (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_the_Year_2525_(Exordium_and_Terminus))

As was previously noted by Switchy in this thread, it was preformed by Zager and Evans.

Here are the lyrics: http://www.metrolyrics.com/lyrics/29388/Zager_and_Evans/In_the_Year_2525/

Is Constant Sorrow Man really the Man of Constant Sorrow on One More Road for the Hit?

If it is, the lyrics on that are different than the lyrics on the traditional song which which leads me to believe this is an original?

The "traditional" lyrics are below:

Man Of Constant Sorrow
Lyrics: Traditional
Music: Traditional

Played by Jerry Garcia with David Grisman in 1991, and much earlier with the Sleepy Hollow Hog Stompers and with David Nelson in the 1960s. More recently played by Phil Lesh & Friends in 2005.

These are the lyrics from the Garcia/Grisman "Pizza Tapes" recording:

I am a man of constant sorrow
I have seen trouble all my days
I bid farewell to old Kentucky
The State where I was born and raised

For six long years I've been in trouble
No pleasure here on earth I've found
For in this world I'm bound to travel (note 1)
I have no friends to help me now

You may bury me in some deep valley (note 2)
For many years where I may lay
Then you may learn to love another
While I am sleeping in my grave

Maybe your friends think I'm just a stranger
My face you'll never see no more
But there is one promise that is given
I'll meet you on God's golden shore

Notes
(1) in the 1960s, Garcia sang "... bound to ramble"
(2) in the 1960s, Garcia sang something like:

Thanks to whitegum.com for the lyrics

Thanks FBC!

If someone could please clarify my question in bold a few posts above this, that would be helpful.

I am also posting a few questions about the song titles/artists in ??? here and below this.

I did some internet searching and found a song called Lucas McGraw by Petra. Is this the same song? Thanks to http://www.petrarocksmyworld.com/.

Lucas McGraw
Words and music by Bob Hartman
Based on Titus 2:7

Lucas McGraw, what's come over you?
We're beginnin' to think you're touched
We heard you got religion
Ya ain't been 'round to see us much
Ya threw away your corncob pipe and your jug of moonshine brew
And we hear you ain't been doin' all those things you used to do

Lucas McGraw what's come over you?
You're shavin' every day
You ain't been chasin' women and you kissed your wife today
You went to church last Sunday and ya shook the preacher's hand
And they say you been talkin' 'bout a home beyond this land

Lucas McGraw, what's come over you?
You never cuss no more
We hear you ain't been feudin', you hung your rifle by the door
Ya take a bath each Sunday, if you need it or not
And ya go to work on Monday even when it's hot

Lucas McGraw what's come over you?
We're beginnin' to think you're touched
We hear ya got religion, ya ain't been 'round to see us much
But ya know we've all been wonderin'
If what you got just might be real
And all the while we're laughin'
Is it really God, is it really God
Is it really God you feel?

I still don't think so. A collaboration means that two artists are working together to make something new. A cover means that one band/artist is taking another's song and does a new, different version of it. I wouldn't list what the Catholics would do to "All the Tired Horses" as either. But hey, these are your threads, so do whatever you think is correct.

Well, the whole band played over the recording so I guess it could be considered a cover.

It was basically a warm up, no vocals, just coming in and out. I wouldn't say its a cover.

If the distinction is between a collaboration and a cover, then certainly its a collaboration. But i'd say that yeah, he's working with another artist, so thats a collaboration in my book.

That Burnt Out Rock and Roll - Gary Green

(He's recorded this and done it live, but it hasn't appeared on anything yet. Maybe that shouldn't count.)

Hi everyone, I am trying to consolidate this list of COVERS. (I will be starting new threads for collaborations). Let me know what you think. I need help with the items with the question marks & to make sure that all collaborations are not in here... Also just in general if you could look it over and make sure I captured everything correctly. Also, if you are making a future contribution please make sure you read the ENTIRE thread to make sure you are not duplicating responses...

The format on this looks a little funky here because I copied it from Excel... I will present the nicely formatted spreadsheet to Dean & Brian once we get everything squared away.

Thanks....
