What does everybody think about the DVD!? I just picked mine up today(sorry, not trying to brag). I'll post my review on Sunday once I've watched it to it's entirety. So far I've been very satisfied..

Yeah let's hope so. If it's half as good as this one then I will be very happy indeed!!!

Announcing a reunion and deciding to do one are two separate things. I am not suggesting that they decided to reunite and then 4AD scrambled. I am 100% sure that 4AD were privy to the earliest rumblings regarding the reunion. I also don't feel that the DVD was "thrown" together or rushed, but I assume there were legal and financial limits to what 4AD were capable of. I doubt a team of lawyers were dispatched worldwide to secure the rights to say a Japanese TV appearance. They just wouldn't have the resources to gamble with. Again, it's all we have.
billgoodman Posted - 05/08/2004 : 08:52:00

yes, it was prepared for ages, 4ad did not rush this, and it was not just for the reunion.

But Marc E. is right
they showed minimal footage of the recording of Blown Away
there must be more from where that came from
and I rather see another concert than the one the DVD
but every 'pixies' thing that's released gives my great joy
and this DVD is certainly satisfying (except for the downplaying of Bossanova and Trompe Le Monde)

I hope 4ad will release more DVD's
more on the road footage and more studio footage
and more Trompe and Bossa stuff

I also have to say that I too feel slightly cheated on the whole DVD. Firstly, there is so much more live footage of them from later periods. At least two more shows should be on there. In GOUGE they show footage from other shows. Sure the quality is crap, but who cares. On the road stuff is great, but that too seems just a snippet of what is really in the archives. I remember speaking to someone who was at the studio when Doolittle was recorded and they were saying that they had a video camera with them most of the time. I don't want to intrude, but some of that would've been nice. It's all to obvious that the DVD was just thrown together to coincide with the reunion. I just wish that a more thorough DVD was released. I'm sure other concert footage and even TV appearances could have been put on had they enough time to get the rights for the, but under the assumed "rushed" circumstances, this is all they could do.

P.S. Regardless of my whining, I absolutely love the DVD. I mean, it's the PIXIES! It's all we have.

On The Road: rating: B. Very interesting, it was mostly a documentary on Kim. I liked Frank's hair getting progressively longer. Anyone notice how many things involved the band minus Frank? From reading his tour diaries, it seemed the Doolittle tour was a bit stressful on him and there might have been some animosity there. I wouldn't have minded it being feature length though, and with that video quality, there is enough room on the DVD for it.

Gouge: Well, considering half the documentary is from the live show on the same disc, it seemed often superfluous. Good doc, but I can't stand when people write retrospectively of the Pixies and write off hte final two studio albums. At the time, they weren't as well received, but if they interviewed anyone from the next generation of Pixies fans (the youngest person interviewed was probably 35), they could have discovered how much everyone loves these records. I watched it with someone who only has their first 3 albums, and clearly after hearing everyone slag off BOSS and TROMPE she probably isn't going to want to check out the rest. I'll give that a B as well.

Concert is a fun to watch, even though I'd already seen the whole thing pretty much from the Gouge doc.

I'm definitely looking forward to a second DVD release!

My DVD was delivered yesterday. I enjoyed all of it, the live section was brilliant. The road section belongs to Kim, those fridge magnets are hillariously awful. The Gouge doccie was good, I didn't like some of "stars" interviewed. Bono, the Bush guy (imagine being in a band named Bush nowadays), Badly Drawn Idiot and the Blur boys. PJ Harvey had me sitting up straight, she seems a very cool lady. I enjoyed Bowie's obvious respect for Frank. Bono oozes fake sincerity as always. A pity Kim was not available for the documentary.

Bring on some more DVD's.

That clip with David showing off the 12 year old's address is weird, was he joking? I remeber reading somewhere on the forum that he chats up young girls at gigs which is just creepy.

Kim was so cool though, i just love her even more now and in the Head On video she looked like a complete babe. I LOVE YOU KIM!

The live performance is freaking awesome. I love Kim's attitude, always having a smile on her face. David's drumming is outstanding. Charles screaming through out the show is awesome. I agree, watching Joey play the guitar just makes you have more respect for him as a guitarist. Love "I've Been Tired" and "In Heaven". This is my favrorite part of the DVD. I'm sick of reading about people complaining about the live performance. I can't get over how great they sound and the setlist is wonderful.

Gouge is so great. The only thing that could have made it better, is if Kim was in it. I love all the detail and stories from Bowie, Bono, and Charles, Joey, and David. I didn't like how they talked about Bossanova and TLM like they were crappy albums. I love how Joey said TLM's sound was rocking and he loved how it sounded.

Videos are really funny. My favorite is "Veloria" cause its so stupid. I love how Joey is in that video for 20 seconds! Also Joey is looking so funny in the "Alec Effiel" video. He has this goofy face in the video. Great stuff!

On the Road is really cool. Charles has some funny moments in this. As mentioned, the rock video in Salt Lake and pretending to shoot up in Chicago. I again I love Kim in this. She seems to have a great personality and its fun to watch her. I LOVE the clips at all the festivals and shows.

Overall I would give this DVD an A+++

I think I'll be watching the live show again and again. Though I get nervous when FRank swings his acoustic during 'In Heaven', like he's going to hit me. A very strange, yet wonderful, sight.

Everything I saw of the dvd today was lovely
what's kind of funny is that there are 4 major screw ups
in franks performaces
2 strings break, a microphone gets knocked down, his guitarstrap gets loose, another string breaks

great stuff! keep on the good work black francis!

Didnt know that that concert was where the actual recordings of In Heaven and Vamos on the "Complete B-sides" came from as well.

3rd Annual Australian Frank Black Countdown August 2003 - all involved parties rank EVERY released FB song from FB self/titled to the present - average ranks are calculated - beer (or suitable substitute) is added (mostly in drinking-game form - ie. rate a song well below its average and you drink a punishing amount), then sit back and enjoy a day of frank black....the only problem is quite often memory of the top songs is somewhat limited the next day

Kim wasn't available at the time they made that, don't read too much into it.

I heard the "What's the matter, Black." thing. Funny. Thought she was kinda' being cheeky.

Watched the whole thing twice on Friday.

Fav from On the Road: Kim in Italy with the fridge-magnet bottle openers. You just have to see that. It cannot be explained.
Fav from the concert: Charles playing air guitar at the end of Ed is Dead...or maybe "In Heaven"...
Fav video: Velouria. Just strange.
Fav from Gouge: Joey: "Planet of Sound rocked." cause I thought so too at the time...thats why my band covered it...

Somehere also in the road footage - some concert - Charles breaks a string in Debaser...while he's being handed the replacement (stock Tele) Kim Says "Whats the matter...Black?" anyone else catch the attitude in that? Loved it.
Strangely he just starts right back into the beginning of the tune...

Does anyone know why Kim wasn't interviewed in the documentary?
jimmy Posted - 05/01/2004 : 20:41:06
My friend picked the dvd up for me last night while I was at work- $13.88 at Newbury Comics- I really like the packaging, the case, the cover isn't as ugly up-close. I still can't believe they morphed their faces- I wish there was a way I could erase that from the disc so I never have to see it again.

I hope they put out another one. It could have a show from 1991 or 92, interviews and performances from 120 Minutes and the Dennis Miller Show.
frank_black_francis Posted - 05/01/2004 : 14:16:04
Oh they are out in Canada alrite!
The concert is excellent.
The Doc and Videos are good.
...except you sorta feel weird watching the road video....I mean, I'm not in them, so what do I care....the only thing I like about it is the Festival Concerts footage.
....am I the only one who falls in love (hard) for Kim Deal everytime I see her playing?
NimrodsSon Posted - 05/01/2004 : 08:16:04
Well, I finally trcked down the DVD on Thursday and I must say, overall it was great. I've got the usual complaints about the live segment (date and length). My favorite part is during In Heaven when Frank's swinging his guitar around and knocks the mic stand over. I'd seen the Gouge documentary before and I never liked it but it's much better on DVD as opposed to on the computer screen. The videos were, of course, great. I love that Velouria video--so pointless--and Allison is also great--playing to the completely empty stadium and waiting for the applause at the end. The On The Road part was wonderful despite the short length.
