It will be an interesting day b/c I also have jury duty. Feh.

Posted - 02/26/2006 : 17:24:42 I'll be there most of this week, Homers, getting immigration paperwork in order. I do have one errand to run tomorrow in the States: getting a frame for this beautiful b+w photo of your Kim (from last year's Reading show). I'm thinking it'll look nice in the guest bedroom in Montreal. That way you can sleep with Kim when you visit my future Canadian home.
I got some heaven in my head

I really want to go there anyway, so this way I can mix business with pleasure.

Posted - 10/05/2004 : 07:28:53 Well, whether or not anyone cares here is what he played:
First of The Gang to Die Bigmouth Strikes Again November Spawned A Monster I Like You Such A Little Thing Makes Such A Big Difference The World Is Full of Crashing Bores Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me How Can Anybody Possibly Know How I Feel? Don't Make Fun of Daddy's Voice Subway Train into Everyday Is Like Sunday Let Me Kiss You How Soon Is Now? Now My Heart Is Full Irish Blood, English Heart The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get You Know I Couldn't Last
There Is A Light That Never Goes Out (encore)
His set is very cool. Big block letters which spell out MORRISSEY (they are white with red lights on them) and a sparkly curtain behind that. It is pretty bare, but also flashy at the same time.
Anyway, he was awesome. I have a musical hangover! Oh, and I cried twice, if anyone is keeping track.

Posted - 09/26/2004 : 09:32:50 Mor-i-see, emphasis on the Mor. Or just Moz.
I saw the Morrissey interview with Jonathan Ross on the BBC, and he came across slightly petulant, like he didn't have to be there but was condescending to our level just to give the masses the pleasure. Its not like he particularly needs alot of publicity like that - he has a pretty rabid (and large) fanbase, after all.
It could be that he's just shy, I guess. He hides it in an annoying way is all.

Posted - 09/26/2004 : 09:17:27 How do you pronounce this guy's name? I always thought it was Mora-see, like the a in "pa."
But there's a Mountain Goats song where he says "I don't like Mor-risee," like the i in "his" and he breaks up the emphasis differently too.

Gracie, I am fascinated by differences in perspective and by subjectivity -- or is the word "subjectiveness"? Anyway, I love Frank and I am not jumping all over you. But I thought that in the Spin piece he seemed very cool and confident and I thought it was Kim who came off as a jerk. Interesting how people can have such different opinions about the same thing.

Posted - 09/25/2004 : 12:11:36 Well, I think it would be a wonderful thing if Morissey got back together with the original Smiths members. I just don't think it woudl ever happen due to the fall out with Morissey/Marr. But it wold be a beautful reunion. Second to the Pixies of course. It would also be a good thing to help out the other band members.
As far as how Charles comes across in the interviews is refreshingly honest/straight forward, compelling, witty, somewhat sarcastic, self aware and down to earth. I have heard the way Morissey comes across and he does come across as arrogant-- but I thought that may have more to do with the persona than what seems/seemed to be an overly sensitive person-- it's just Morissey being Morissey.

I agree. Frank comes off as anything but arrogant. Deeply intelligent, very funny and emotionally astute. Whereas Kim Deal sounds mopey and self-pitying at best, IMHO.

I think I was somewhat put off Morrissey by seeing a couple of interviews with him: he comes as quite arrogant and aloof - not a rock star detachment, more of an irritating character trait. Its almost like he buys into this image that he's created for himself, the miserable old man railing against the evils of the world.
I'm happy to agree that he's one of the finest lyricists the world has ever produced, but for the most part I don't feel that the music has been up to scratch. Johnny Marr is a musical genius and a great guitarist, and acted as a perfect foil to Morrissey's lyrics. They were the perfect package together, but separately not so hot.
I think he's one of those artists that totally polarises opinion, so I don't really mind if you like him - I can kind of see why. I'l just politely disagree.

I do appreciate your polite and thought-provoking disagreement, Cheesedude. I know what you mean about the irritating character trait so I was pleasantly surprised to see in most of the "Quarry" interviews that Morrissey seems mellowed out and actually happy, not morose at all. Certainly changed from his 80s gloom, which, happily, I can also say for myself.
And, yes, I am wearing another black Morrissey T-shirt as I type....
I still believe in the excellent joy of the Frank |

Posted - 09/25/2004 : 10:00:46 I don't think that he is an engaging guy and when i see him in interviews i do cringe but i just try to avoid it so as not to contaminate the music. I can't work out whether the whole thing is an act or he is that way inclined.
There are lots of famous people that come across badly in interviews (Frank being one of them) but then they can't all be Kim Deal. |

Posted - 09/25/2004 : 02:26:38 Reading/ watching Morrissey interviews usually makes me wish I didn't like his music. But I do. Love the Smiths, like the new album and some patches in his solo career were ok.
Sad about Andy Rourke yes. I've read a few articles which claimed that Morrissey was the only one to make money out of the Smiths. He lives in a LA mansion now......

Posted - 09/25/2004 : 00:46:00 I have listened to some of his older stuff again, heard his new album, and I have decided that I still like him.
Of course he's a poseur, but he does have talent, so I guess that makes up for it.
And the Smiths were the first important band in my life, so I owe him (and Johnny Marr) a lot.
Did you know that Andy Rourke had to auction his bass guitar on eBay last year (the one he recorded some Smiths album or other with)? Sad, eh.
