i don't get the big fuss about throwing muses really, not a fan at all of their music. so please tell me, what is so good about them? is there a track i should check out that will make me see the light (because what i've heard so far certainly hasn't)...

and hersh looks a bit scary on that 50ft wave poster, they're all over manchester, and they scare me.

And it's hard to be a human being, and it's harder as anything else, and I'm lonesome when you're around, and I'm never lonesome when I'm by myself, and I miss you when you're around.

"Slow Dust" is great with that early version of "Slow Dog" and the hidden track. It may be hard to find now, but the "Gepetto" cassette-single B-side is the "U.S. Radio Remix" of "Slow Dog" and it's got a really cool intro. I've never seen this version on any of their other releases.

Aside from the fact that most of the Throwing Muses lyrics are stupid, incoherent nonsense, they make very good music. If you're going to just download, the best are:

Hate My Way ( 1986 Throwing Muses album version)
Mexican Women (House Tornado)
Devil's Roof, Mania (Hunkpapa)
Hook In Her Head (The Real Ramona)
Amazing Grace (Counting Backwards EP)
Cry Baby Cry (Not Too Soon EP)
The Visit (Red Heaven)
Crayon Sun (Bright yellow Gun EP)
Surf Cowboy (University)
Cowbirds (Limbo)
Civil Disobedience, Solar Dip (Throwing Muses 2003)

Be aware when you are just getting into the muses: after a year you are totally addicted...

My favourite 'period' is pre-Hunkpapa: Muses at their best I'd say. The albums after Hunkpapa (Hunkpapa is the only album I 'dislike') are perfect as well, but aren't that weird and typically Muses-like (if there is such a thing...).

50 Foot Wave is definitely one of the best bands around nowadays. I will see them in Amsterdam on 1 October and I'm already fucking exited!

ohh the shop is on it's last legs - we're hopefully getting our new shop in the new year, but drop me an email (link on my profile!) and I'll have a loook - I could bring it along to the gig tonight and save you the postage too, cause I'm good like that!

they did! Last year... although money meant they could only do a few gigs - so there was one night in London, then Dublin, plus Glasgow and Manchester, but then a load of US dates which also included Tanya... now 50 Foot Wave exists and David Narcizo doesn't want to do live work any more, TM is effectively over... although they might do one-off's again

I don't think Frank Black and the Catholics were a financially guaranteed success. Frank only last year was saying how much he appreciated the royalty cheques from the David Bowie cover.

I personally think Kristin Hersh is a musical genius like Frank Black. The music buying public seems to recognize that now presumably because of the likes of Radiohead, PJ Harvey, Placebo and the numerous guitar bands that have emerged in the last couple of years.

sorry Franck, it had to be done!

weirdly, whenever I think of all the Muses gigs last year, I always forget about Dublin- I'm not sure why either. It's strange. Dublin was so empty too. A funny old night..! I remember hearing the songs for the first time - I think the first song I heard was Mercury, and I got shivers down my back, major shivers.. hearing Kristin and Tanya sing together again. I nearly burst into tears when Solar Dip came to the last chorus.. it was strange... probably from hearing the early versions of the song as a Kristin song, and seeing it evolve into this mad fast song, while still not losing what made the song great in the first place.. maybe? It's just a shame Tanya never came over to Europe for those dates... maybe that's why I always forget about them - seeing them in NY was just fantastic and something I'd never want to repeat because I don't know if it could be topped as far as great nights out with great bands go...

can you remember what percentage songs made up most of their live sets on that tour? Obviously quite a lot from the last album, but I can't think that one got a higher quota than another..

Glad someone finally mentioned the last Throwing Muses album (aka "Sensuous Flaps", aka "Uses" for the useless Amazon.fr staff who can't even unfold a sleeve to read the full name of the album). It had to be you, Jo... :)

I love that album, it's a rocker, has got great hooks and lovely Kristin-and-Tanya harmonies. I really don't understand how it could be so overlooked. Especially since it came out at a time when critics were raving about the "return of rock" and feeding us stuff like B.R.M.C., "yeah man, look, I wear black leather jackets and my hair's in my eyes, wok'n'woll man!" (I've had their album for a long time, when I realised that it still bored me as much after listen #12 as it did during listen #1, I sold it.) Meanwhile, TM rocked more than ever, and nobody seemed to care, that seemed so unfair. But then, I'm aware that this comes from a fanboy's perspective. I may be biased :)

Besides, Throwing Muses, the album, conjures fond memories of a concert in Dublin... "Furious" was the opener (which thrilled me no end, 'cause I had just been thinking how great an opener "Furious" would be!).

"Furious", of course, is from Red Heaven, a TM album that I definitely recommend to all y'all fans of rockin' rockingness. It's TM's first post-Tanya album, and in some ways I like to think it's a blueprint for the rawer sound Kristin Hersh would eventually cultivate. It took me some time to get into, and I'm still not sure about the track "Dio" (with Bob Mould guesting on vocals), but in the end, it's become one of my most cherished TM albums.

On the other hand, I still don't get "Hunkpapa".

Also, I agree about "Doghouse". The first TM album is a strange and beautiful object indeed. I still have the attraction/repulsion thing going strong with this one. I think repeated listens are in order there.

Hope you finally get there Simon, but if you don't, well, maybe there's just nothing for you in there.

Take this rock and shake it 'til it bleeds.

the red one? We've got around 20 copies left before it's deleted forever....

same with some other ep's - we're down to our last few copies... got the FB Headache single down to the last 10 now...
benji Posted - 09/22/2004 : 05:53:44
have you heard the slow dusted ep from belly simon?
it was their first release - 3 songs from star, but earlier versions + 1 other, and it's phenomenal - it's my favourite of their releases.

dunno if it's still avail from jo....

and musically, I love them both, but try to avoid comparisons... if I can.
jo Posted - 09/22/2004 : 03:31:51
I think a good starting point for Throwing Muses is the middle - the early stuff is the more difficult to listen to - I say take the easy route, decide what you like, and then branch off. So I'd always recommend starting with 'The Real Ramona' - then if you like the poppier or rockier songs, you'll probably like the later stuff more, whereas the tricky ones, where you hear something new each time you listen, then the early stuff is for you.

Their last album from 2003 (the one my husband nicknamed 'Sensuous Flaps') is also a good starter point... if you like 50 Foot Wave, that isn't a guarantee you'd like Throwing Muses - 50 Foot Wave are different, but you can definitely hear the change of music for Kristin on the last Muses album - it's very different to the other Muses albums, almost more agressive, and louder, and faster.

Free downloads wise, beestung is great- also check over at 4ad.com in the Throwing Muses artist section - I think there's full tracks to download there (or if not, then Real Audio...) or if you want to be really cool and do something which Kristin benefits from, sign up for one of the Works in Progress series she does. The last one contains a lot of the Throwing Muses songs that ended up on the last album, but it's all demos that she's done prior to the records being released. They don't cost a lot, don't come with artwork or anything, but are sometimes better than the actual released songs (I love 'Civil Disobedience' on the WIP tracks, possibly more than the album version, and it's just Kristin and an electric guitar... it sounds incredible.).

i would leave the room everytime my sister played hps + makers for months and months...
it was just so girly.
i was a huge pixies fan at that stage and also was loving University, but had not made the connection. i was also a very silly 14 year old.
but once i realised the connection, i gave the record and chance, and it blew me away...hips + makers is a fantastic record...one of my desert island discs without a doubt...get it soon McCheese!

Actually, I like dizzy. It's a good song albeit poppy-- that made me go out and buy hunkpapa. That's the only album of theirs I own, but I have recently listened to stuff on Real Player that is amazing like Hunkpapa.

It's actually the song that exposed me to the band-- I saw it on 120 Minutes... back in the day that was the only way I found out about new/alt rock where I lived. That or either randomally picking out tapes in from the three columns alt rock tapes at the record store in the mall... so otherwise I am not sure when/if I would have ever found out about the band :)
EnglishGeezer Posted - 09/21/2004 : 17:59:09
For the best muses stuff you need to venture into the earlier work. For me "In a Doghouse" and "House Tornado/The Fat Skier" are amazing works of art. The guitars are fragmented and jangly, the bass playing is raw and as good as it gets(Leslie Langston left to become a social worker!), and well David Narcizo's drumming is stunning, kinda waltzy up and down, truely unique.

You must get these before you form an opinion on the Throwing Muses! Its like only hearing Bossanova and Trompe.....you just Have to hear Doolittle and Surfa.

Hope I was a help !

I have University and Limbo on my list now, as well as Hips & Makers.
I came at TM from a funny direction really. I got into the new Tanya Donelly album, then bought the rest of her solo albums and Belly, then I got 50 Foot Wave and backtracked finally to Throwing Muses.
The cool thing is, its all great music!

I got hooked via 'Counting Backwards' when it came out as a single and got played on Satellite telly. Anyone I've played Muses stuff to who likes it seemed to get into The Real Ramona pretty easily at first but then got more into the first few albums. I know a few people who got into 'Hips and Makers' before the Muses clicked with them too....

well bumble - dizzy is a bad song...plain and simple...kristin wrote it cause she felt she had to try to be poppy..result = bad song
not too soon is actually a tanya donelly song, who is much more poppy than kristin's stuff.
firepile is a good song, but definitely not the best on the album by a mile.

that's kinda closed minded... i actually struggle liking female singers, don't know why, i just very rarely like them... no idea why, just don't sound right... which could be where my problem lies. maybe also as it sounds a bit dated to me?

[scrambles for the TM tracks he has]

ok, firepile, not bad, doesn't really grab me until the middle part with the guitar solo... but kind of hoped it go 'further' (maybe louder or rocker) after that solo, but just goes back to how it was really, then the solo again... it's not bad.

dizzy - this is the track that put me off them in the first place, it's that sound a don't like, like a smiths sound, too jangly guitar-like, too 80's indie IMO.

not too soon - too 'poppy' really, not bad, a tanya song? did she also re-release this on her solo album? as i'm sure i've got it on there too?

Go go the average man! What are you looking for average man? The ain't nothing average about me man!

i think tanya's song's really grow alot into real ramona. on previous albums, i felt they were there cause they kinda had to be, but on RR, they are very very good.

leads perfectly into Pod and Star - great threesome of records there that tanya made in 3 years.

the real ramoa is a fabulous record - it's also their poppiest sounding record, so be aware of that.
hook in her head is phenomenal.
but the b-sides for the 2 singles are the amazing thing about the record. "cottonmouth" is quite possible the best TM song ever written.

definitey go for "in a Doghouse"
2cd's of pure brilliance.
thats where i would start....if those songs don't get you going, nothing will.

but seriously, some of the most intense songs i have ever heard appear on that record.
the version of vicky's box from the 2nd cd is my fav muses song....
i can bring the discs along on thursday if ya like simon - but you'd have to give it back.
