Who wants to play?
I did this a few years ago on a mailing list and it worked really well.
It’s as simple as you create a list of people who are interested in swapping mix cd’s and then you swap your personally created cd with others.

Now, with this being a frank site, the mix cd’s cannot contain any material from said artist, or for that matter the pixies either, but can contain anything else.

So people interested simply reply to this message and once enough people have joined, a list will be compiled with everyone’s mailing addresses which will be sent to all interested parties and the creating and sending of the cd’s can begin.

To make sure all the people on the list will actually go through with said swap, please contact the person you want to send the cd too before you send it to confirm that they’re going to send one in return.

Now the game is open to anyone, everywhere, and people are free to choose how many swaps they are willing to do because if too many people want to swap, the costs involved with postage just get a bit silly.
But for me personally, I’m going to make 5 copies of my mix cd and limit it to that.
Now if no-one wants to play the game, I’ll just have to give the bastards away.

Anyone interested?

sorry i haven't posted in ages.

but i do recommend opening another topic for the new one...think it'll get a bit confusing otherwise.

Ok, look how about the new people that want to join, join, we send out the same cds, to the new ones, they send theirs to the old ones. Then give it til everyones got everyones and staert official round 2, then we will all be at the same place, and we get it moving along smoothly.

Perhaps i should make a new topic, so we can say its open again...

I'll send you mine Cheeseman.

As for the work/music situation I am the queen of music at the moment - I've thankfully now just got one victim who does no complaining whatsoever, though I do think this is simply because he is both terrified and amused by me. I used to share a studio with a guy who has the same musical taste as my mother. Not good. Billy Joel, Cliff Richard, Robbie Williams eeeeeeeew, makes my skin crawl.

I'm a hopeless romantic - he's just hopeless (diddly-dee-dee).

Heh, you sound like you have a similar work situation to me Rosa, one more than one occasion its been "no, actually you will listen to Velvet Underground." I figure if I keep telling them my taste in music is much better than theirs (which it is), they'll just start to accept it sooner or later.

Benji snaffled me a copy of his CD so I can comment on that one. I don't have a CD burner, but if anyone wants to send me a copy of their CD they can be assured of my heartiest appreciation.
Isaac has a similar taste in music to my, so obviously his CD was excellent. Good choice of Sigur Ros song, and maybe my second favourite Low song too. Also, clearly, you can't beat a bit of Mogwai.

I´m very surprised and happy that most of you liked a lot Silence 4 and David Fonseca. They are Portuguese and David Fonseca is the Silence 4 singer that broke up a few years ago and now he has his band with his name. I like them but I begun to like even more when I read an interview where he said that he loved the Pixies and that his favourite album was Doolittle. I think he sometimes covers the Pixies but I never heard, it must be good!

Right - here goes:

Rita - Yours is my get drunk and dance around the kitchen mix, though it works just as well without the booze when I'm storming my way to work in the morning. You are one cool mama. Prefer the first half to the second, but track 15 -Tones on tail - Happiness - is HOT!

Obfuscate - I have to admit I skip track 1 everytime and I did find yours one of the more difficult to get into, it needs some truly dedicated listening. Love the punky bits of it, James White & the Blacks - Almost Black and thank you thank you thank you for reminding me of the genius that is Charles Mingus. When my heating & hot water came back this week I had the most fantastic long hot bath with Mr Mingus to celebrate.

Whore - I initially didn't think I'd like yours but with Fleetwood Mac - Tusk (I have such a soft spot for 70s rock) and track 5 - El Columpio Asesino - Vamos, so Pixie-esque I couldn't help but love it.

Bumble - yours gets played loads at work and I've been nagged by more than one person for a copy. Am I wrong to assume you are a hopeless romantic? I can't listen to yours on the way to work, I'd land up getting distracted and daydreaming on a park bench somewhere. The Girl from Brownsville Texas and Comforting Sounds are my two favourites - both make me cry they are so beautiful.

Brokenface - yours is another that gets the work seal of approval (and believe me they are a tough bunch to please - I frankly annoy the hell out of them). There is so much on here that I was unfamiliar with, so nice touch with the links & I loved your bit about testing it out. This is another that needs more dedicated listening but so far my favourite tracks are I'm a Ghost and Cardboard Canyon. (Go listen to Wefunkradio.com, I'd be suprised if you don't like it)

Tre - Like I said before, yours got it's first listen after a very wild weekend on my way back to Leeds from London which was perfect for it. Deus - Roses, Mars Volta - Sonet Lumiere & Jeff - Buckley - Lover You Should Have Come Over are all three tracks that have my full attention every time.

Shine - I wasn't even supposed to get yours, but you spoil me. I need to listen to this more to give it a proper critique but my favourites are easily easily DOA - Midnight Special (very appropriate given my provenance) & The Cult - Star

Homer - I ended up loving yours despite myself, of course you have 80's Matchbox on there, which made it all the more easy for me. What surprised me is that despite having more than a few bands on there that I've deliberately stayed away from (I can be a stubborn bitch sometimes) just because of the hype around them, yours is probably my favourite. (Though I admit I have to skip through the Peter Gabriel track)

Benji - I was blown away by yours - the Sigur Ros track is awesome. Loads of stuff on there I've been intrigued by but never investigated further. It's not a mix I listen to often, rather one I'm saving for some slow hot sex.

I just felt kinda guilty not having anything to say.

This is a hard thing to do, because I feel all the mix were very good, but here it goes:

Benji,
The first one that I received and it was a big surprise, I didn´t knew almost everything,
my fav. sigur ros - svefn-g-englar
dirty three - Sue´s last ride
cat power - no sense

Whore,
Another Big surprise, I wasn´t expecting so many bands that I knew their names but never gave them much attention
Fav. Calexico - Bloodflow
Fleetwood Mac - Tusk
El columpio asesino - amos

Obfuscate,
One of my favourites, I liked almost everything in it.
Fav. Utah Philips - I will not obey
James White and the blacks - Almost black
Modern lovers - Dignified and old
The Gun club - She´s like heroin to me
The Fall - Second dark age

Homer,
Another one that I enjoyed a lot, it got me into some new bands that I didn´t knew very well
Fav. The flaming lips - She don´t use jelly
The new pornographers - Electric version
The von bondies - c´mon c´mon
Stellastar - My coco
The 80´s matchbox B-line disaster - Psychosis safari

Surfer rosa,
This one is difficult for me, because I like very much some musics but there are some that I need to take more time to get into them
Fav. Roxy music - In every home is a heartache
Bloodhound gang - The ballad of chasey lain
The 80´s matchbox B-line disaster - Psychosis safari

Broken face,
I liked almost everything on this one, it was very good because I´ve discovered some very good bands.
Fav. Jonny Polonsky - Half mind
Mosquitos - Boombox
The new pornographers - Testament to youth in verse
David Byrne - Everyone´s in love with you

Tre,
The hardest one, maybe because it was the last one that I´ve received and I didn´t got the time to listen closely
Fav.Sherrac - Prayer to god
Sonic youth - Slap tracer

But to resume I loved all and it was a great experience to me this game, I had never done this before...and it was very, very nice .

Obrigada a todos,

Rita

let me try and wax philosophical on these mixes:

surfer rosa - the mix it took me the most time to get into - heavy on the queens of the stone age and their alumni which is something i dig. i wish there was a bit for variety for my taste because i was aware of many of the QOTSA side projects (mark lanegan, dwarves, etc). fav track - beastie boys "sabrosa"

benji - the most "consistent" of the mixes - i feel like this was really a mood mix, as opposed to a "greatest hits" mix, which is great. plus i dig a lot of the same bands (sigur ros, cat power, godspeed). fav track - sigur ros - "svefn-g-englar)

bumble bee boy 2 - bbb2 probably has the most similar record collection to myself. a bunch of bands featured would have made my mix if made 2 or 3 years ago (get up kids, that dog) fav. track - hefner - the day that thatcher dies

obfuscate by will - once again, at a different point in my life it would've been a very similar mix. for about a year i listened almost exclusively to older post-punk, punk/funk stuff like the pop group, gang of four, james chance). plus the only mix to feature some jazz (coltrane missed my cut b/c of time). fav track - charles mingus "self portrait in three colors"

rita - the first mix i received. i really enjoyed the mix, but for me it peaked early - those first two tracks knocked me out. so after that, it was hard to keep up the momentum. but at the end the nick cave and buscemi tracks picked it up again. fav track - silence 4 - my friends

tre - blank

shineoftheever - the one i received last - "avenue b" is one of the great forgotten iggy songs - lots of cool songs on here - no artists that i didn't know that i'm eagerly searching out...at least not yet - i almost included an excellent live "kimberly austin" by porno for pyros. fav track - iggy pop - "avenue b"

homer - the other disc very close to my record collection. the new pornographers track is actually called "the laws have changed" - the album is the electric version. brave choice of "salsbury hill" - perhaps the most well known song in the whole set of CDs - "only in dreams" almost ended my mix too - fav. track dios - "nobody's perfect"/weezer - "only in dreams"

whore - didn't get it (not whore's fault, wasn't supposed to)

-brian

I wrote fairly lengthy bits for each mix, but decided they were too critical.

The songs I liked:

Surfer_Rosa

In Every Dream Home A Heartache - Roxy Music
Gloria - Patti Smith
Fifteen Thousand - Gibby Haynes
Bad Dream Mama - the Eagles of Death Metal

Great mix. Was pretty into it until the Dwarves tracks crept in. My overall favorite.
Kinda vented my enthusiasm for this mix in a previous post.

Broken_Face

I Don't Wanna Die - the Unicorns
Half Mind - Jonny Polonsky

rita

Sex Beat - Gun Club
Preaching the Blues - Gun Club
Foi na Crua - Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds

Tre

Don't have it

I do know and enjoy the REM, Shellac, and NoMeansNo tracks.

bumblebeeboy2

Sometimes I Wish I Was A Pretty Girl - Robyn Hitchcock

whoreatthedoor

Bloodflow - Calexico
Tusk - Fleetwood Mac
Speedway At Nazareth - Mark Knopfler
We Walk - REM

Pretty varied in what he chose. I really enjoyed "Speedway At Nazareth"

Homer

She Don't Use Jelly - Flaming Lips

benji

Dead Flag Blues - GSY!BE

I don't have benji's mix handy right now. (Pretty sure it was Dead Flag Blues)
This is probably the *best* mix I've received, IMO. Great flow, mostly instrumental. Great rainy day album for me.

-

Bummed you thought the mix was freeky, X.

Ah well.

Surfer Rosa Posted - 10/22/2004 : 09:16:37
Brilliant - thanks I'll get started on comments when I have a clear brain!
whoreatthedoor Posted - 10/22/2004 : 09:05:08
Seems nobody is gonna start the comments. So I'll start. My fave songs, in no special order:

Homer:
I love every single song, but specially:
The Flaming Lips - She Don't Use Jelly
Fucking funny lyrics! Huhuhuhuhehehe
The New Pornographers - Electric Version
No comments. I love it.

Homer and Bumble:
Concretes - Can't Hurry Love
I may look like a complete idiot singing it and shaking my head while driving in my car.

Bumble:
Mew - Comforting Sounds
Could last forever, grows and grows every minute (And it's quite long!)
Hefner - The day that Thatcher Dies
My mother's fave.

Rita:
Silence 4 - My friends
Good for hanging out with some friends... or alone
David Fonseca - The 80's
There's no escape: Must do a little dance when I hear it.

Tre:
Deus - Roses
I don't understand yet the complete lyrics, but I've made a short story in my head with the sentence "Thank you for the roses". Maybe the song goes in a complete different way, but my story is terrible. Can't stop shivering.

Surfer Rosa
Patti Smith - Gloria
Haven't heard this cover yet, but is almost beating the original. Morrisson will be playing it here for 65 Euros a single ticket. So I prefer to hear this version.
80s Matchbox b-line disaster
It's in another mix, isn't it? Amazing screaming!!!

ObWill
Modern Lovers - Dignified and old
After seeing him live, I'm in a Jonathan Richman fever. Don't wanna bother you, but the rest of your mix is kind of freeky for me.

Broken Face
Sufjan Stevens - For the Widows in Paradise, For the Fatherless in Ypsilanti
Sweet, simple, beautiful song. Sooooo sweet. Believe me, it's sweetness made song.

Benji
Sigur Rós - Svefn-g-englar
Needs some stormy weather for a nice listening. And a burning fireplace. And a good old cheese. And a sofa. And...

That's all. I love some other songs, but it's too much work to write it in one single day.
