I have heard a few songs from the EELS and it sounds pretty cool. What do you guys think of the EELS and which one of their CDs is the best for a first time listener?

I've never paid much attention to the lyrics in Eels songs. But I love them. I saw them last summer at First Ave. in Minneapolis. They put on one hell of a show and did five encore sets. They'd go off stage but just keep coming back out. Even after they brought up the houselights and turned off all the stage lights. The floor started to clear out a bit and after a few minutes their manager came out and announced that they had left the building. Then they came back out again and played a weird song where the bass player played drums and the drummer breakdanced (quite nicely). Then he moshed out into the audience and it was over. They're fun. |

hmmm I guess I can see the Tom Waits thing. make him an angry cynical upset in the head hard done by waits and you're close. I love Mr E, he rocks my world... ha ha, reason for another lyrics post...

Here is how someone explained eels style to me:
"if you took Wilco, made a young Tom Waits their singer, and forced them to stick to more traditional Blues-based forms, you'd have something akin to Eels."
Is that a pretty good description of their sound? If so, it sounds like the eels will be great.

I really like Electro-Shock Blues. Plenty of great songs on that record, and it's got this funeral/death theme throughout the record.
There's also that Field Mice, Headlice, Spiders in the kitchen song. It sounds like the score to a Tim Burton film turned into a hip hop song.
Going Over To Susan's House is another favorite.

yeah, mr E's beautiful blues (i think.....)
but it's not all poppy they can be quite dark too, very soulfull really
[edit] These are the lyrics from elizabeth on the bathroom floor, one of the saddest songs.. it may not look much lyricaly but it's really mournfull..it's written about finding his sister after she took an overdose.. the later albums are cheery poppy niceness but some of the early stuff.. ooh dark dark dark

They are great...very much in the TMBG clever music category. "My Beloved Monster" makes me think of my giant cats.

I like the eels, have all the albums but the newest one, I think beautiful freak is most accesible for newbies, then daisies for the galaxy, I love electroshock blues but it seems to be less favoured by most, I guess that's the hardest one to get maybe, but they are fantastic, lovely music, I think I'm going to put some on now
*Sigh*
(I saw them a few years ago, one of the weirdest gigs I've ever been to, it was a total sit down in the theatre gig and handsome Mr E was lead onstage in a straightjacket by a minder....he's so cool)

i love the eels, have most of their albums, daisies for the galaxy is a lovely album!

I like the eels. The first one I ever bought by them (and the only) was "Beautiful Freak." I had heard the song "Novacaine for the Soul" on the radio and I thought it was cool. That album was out in like, '96 or '97 I think.
I have heard alot of songs from their other albums here and there, but "Beautiful Freak" was the first one I started out with and it seems as good as any. (It may even be their first one, I don't know...)
