I have heard a few songs from the EELS and it sounds pretty cool. What do you guys think of the EELS and which one of their CDs is the best for a first time listener?

I like the eels. The first one I ever bought by them (and the only) was "Beautiful Freak." I had heard the song "Novacaine for the Soul" on the radio and I thought it was cool. That album was out in like, '96 or '97 I think.
I have heard alot of songs from their other albums here and there, but "Beautiful Freak" was the first one I started out with and it seems as good as any. (It may even be their first one, I don't know...)

i love the eels, have most of their albums, daisies for the galaxy is a lovely album!
And it's hard to be a human being, and it's harder as anything else, and I'm lonesome when you're around, and I'm never lonesome when I'm by myself, and I miss you when you're around. |

Yes, yes I do!
I like the eels, have all the albums but the newest one, I think beautiful freak is most accesible for newbies, then daisies for the galaxy, I love electroshock blues but it seems to be less favoured by most, I guess that's the hardest one to get maybe, but they are fantastic, lovely music, I think I'm going to put some on now
*Sigh*
(I saw them a few years ago, one of the weirdest gigs I've ever been to, it was a total sit down in the theatre gig and handsome Mr E was lead onstage in a straightjacket by a minder....he's so cool)
I don't mean to sound bitter, cold, or cruel, but I am, so that's how it comes out.

They are great...very much in the TMBG clever music category. "My Beloved Monster" makes me think of my giant cats.
Frank's band is better than your band. Sing it. |

I like Flower:
Turn the ugly light off God Wanna feel the night Everyday it shines down on me Don't you think that I see Don't you think that I see What it's all about Hard to look the other way While the world passes me by And everyone is trying to bum me out It's a pretty big world God And I am awful small Everyday they rain down on me Flower in a hail storm Flower in a hail storm Living for the drought I can throw it back again But then I play their game Everyone is trying to bum me out When I came into this world they slapped me And everyday since then I'm slapped again Tomorrow's kid, and unsightly coward, You see I know I'm gonna win Turn the ugly light off God Don't wanna see my face Every day it will betray me Don't you think that I know Don't you think that I know What they're talking about If they step on me tonight They're gonna pay someday Everyone is trying to bum me out
I don't mean to sound bitter, cold, or cruel, but I am, so that's how it comes out.

are these the guys that sing that song that's been in a couple movies (road trip, along came polly) that has the words "god-damn right it's a beautiful day" in the chorus, kinda catchy, poppy?

yeah, mr E's beautiful blues (i think.....)
but it's not all poppy they can be quite dark too, very soulfull really
[edit] These are the lyrics from elizabeth on the bathroom floor, one of the saddest songs.. it may not look much lyricaly but it's really mournfull..it's written about finding his sister after she took an overdose.. the later albums are cheery poppy niceness but some of the early stuff.. ooh dark dark dark
Laying on the bathroom floor Kitty licks my cheek once more And I.... I could try But waking up is harder when you wanna die
Walter’s on the telephone Tell him I am not at home ‘cause I... Think I... Am going to a place where I’m always high
My name is Elizabeth My life is shit and piss

I really like Electro-Shock Blues. Plenty of great songs on that record, and it's got this funeral/death theme throughout the record.
There's also that Field Mice, Headlice, Spiders in the kitchen song. It sounds like the score to a Tim Burton film turned into a hip hop song.
Going Over To Susan's House is another favorite.

Daisies and Souljacker are their best albums. Jeannie's Diary is a masterpiece. |

Here is how someone explained eels style to me: "if you took Wilco, made a young Tom Waits their singer, and forced them to stick to more traditional Blues-based forms, you'd have something akin to Eels." Is that a pretty good description of their sound? If so, it sounds like the eels will be great.

hmmm I guess I can see the Tom Waits thing. make him an angry cynical upset in the head hard done by waits and you're close. I love Mr E, he rocks my world... ha ha, reason for another lyrics post...
P.S. You Rock My World
I was at a funeral the day I realised I wanted to spend my life with you sitting down on the steps at the old post office the flag was flying at half mast and I was thinkin' 'bout how everyone was dying and maybe it is time to live
I don't know where we're going I don't know what we'll do
walked into the thrif-tee saw the man with the hollow eyes who didn't give me all my change but it didn't bother me this time 'cause I know I only got this moment and it's good
I went to the gas station old woman honked her horn waiting for me to fix her car I don't know where we're going I don't know what we'll do
laying in bed tonight I was thinking and listening to all the dogs and the sirens and the shots and how the careful man tries to dodge the bullets while a happy man takes a walk and maybe it is time to live
They're worth listening to, download a few tracks, road test them! Read round them too... web link...http://www.eelstheband.com/main.php

I've never paid much attention to the lyrics in Eels songs. But I love them. I saw them last summer at First Ave. in Minneapolis. They put on one hell of a show and did five encore sets. They'd go off stage but just keep coming back out. Even after they brought up the houselights and turned off all the stage lights. The floor started to clear out a bit and after a few minutes their manager came out and announced that they had left the building. Then they came back out again and played a weird song where the bass player played drums and the drummer breakdanced (quite nicely). Then he moshed out into the audience and it was over. They're fun. |
