Posted - 08/18/2004 : 12:43:01 Can someone please recommend some new music for me? I've gone back to the mid eighties. It's kind of embarassing to pick up the phone and have the Bronski Beat cranking in the background. My brother came out and gave me a John Frusciante album that's actually real good. I've got the new PJ Harvey, Cure. Those are both excellent but I've worn them out.
Please help I'm stagnating over here.
It sure is tough living on the cutting edge.

KOK, sometime's it's good to embrace your musical rut. Are you gonna do better than Bronski? Better than the Smiths? Just put on London Calling and feel the magic all over again. That's my advice, as a fellow old fart 40something.
But what do I know? The only remotely new music I buy is by musicians I've loved since the 80s (Patti Smith, Morrissey).

What are you after though KoK? poppy nonsense? dancey happiness? screamy angst? meloncholic guitarynoise? Indie Rock? There's little I've found of recent times that makes my tunny flutter the way many of the important bands do, but some of it is real good to listen to, the ferdinand are throwaway moise, I'm happy to wiggle along to it but when I'm 90 I doubt I'll be discussing them much

I'm thirty seven. My first album was Sargeant Peppers. My second was the Kinks (can't think of the name of the album). When I look back on it, the Kinks were pretty cutting edge. Borderline alternative?
Any recommendations?

They're no Bronski Beat

Well you really want something new, then try something from another continent such as Europe France: Mano Negra, Manu Chao (is this still French??), sorry don`t know any other right now! Belgium: Deus, K`s choice, Soulwax, Nederland: Di-rect, Anouk, Germany: Rammstein
Di-rect, Anouk?
Are you serious? If these two bands are the best we have in our country we should be ashamed. I mean, they s-u-c-k!!!
So, why didn't you recommend Frans Bauer?
I'm bored with the valleys and bored by the peaks. So I bought a ticket to the Pixies
Chickenwithtwoheads, I must admit I felt a little embarrased when I saw your reaction. I must admit that at the moment I run quite behind with all the latest Dutch bands (Belgium as well). Or sometimes I hear something new and then I forget what it was. You say that Anouk and Di-rect suck, but thatis probably a little too much overdone. I think these two are still the best International Rock acts of the Netherland. Both of them have had their succes in national and international open air events. I definitely like them much more than KANE, which is often reffered as the most succesfull band of the Netherlands I believe, but that`s a matter of taste. I just named bands that come up as the first in my head that could be introduced to an American.
I`ll try to name some more bands now that are quite O.K as a Dutch band, again I must admit I donot follow it that closely anymore. I hope you can also add some more names, since you said Anouk and Di-rect suck but you didn`t yet gave any alternative names instead!!
Krezip Within Temptation Blof (not that international) Brainpower, Osdorp Posse, Spookrijders, onderhonden Urban Dance Squad Betty Serveert Intwine (I don`t like them) Van Katoen Skik Kirsten, Nilsson (probably stopped already) Relax (too much show off to me) Ceasar Hallo Venray Gotcha! Van Dik Hout, Acda en de Munnik Ilse de Lange Doe Maar The Nits Golden Earing

Posted - 08/20/2004 : 06:31:00 KOK, nothing wrong with listening to Bronski Beat all day, as far as I'm concerned.
And Gang of Four. God, it was fun back in the 80s to listen to them.

Posted - 08/20/2004 : 05:40:04 why new music?
Everything is new!
mr. Charles Thompson led me to some great music from the past like Hank Williams, Jimmy Rodgers and Johnny Horton.
All of Johnny Cashs early work is pretty cool, especially the two famous prison recordings (Folsom prison and San Quentin)
But if you really want some new music, try these torrent sites like suprnova.org. Very often, you can find records that aren't released yet.
Like the new Interpol album, which I believe still isn't released, but I downloaded it three monts ago

Posted - 08/20/2004 : 03:46:37 I personally cannot recommend 80's Matchbox B-Line Disaster - Horse of the Dog enough - loud dark - imagine Kings of Leon if they were possessed and taking way too much speed! If you're having a bit of an 80's moment, try 2manydjs (Soulwax from Belgium's dj work) - brilliant mash ups that work so damn welland their new album as Soulwax is also sounding v.v. good from what I've heard. Or for some early 80's inspired fun Scissor Sisters and Franz Ferdinand. And if you haven't heard it yet, The Distillers - Coral Fang. None of these are particularly new, but soooo worth listening to if you haven't discovered them yet. |

Posted - 08/19/2004 : 18:43:13 Okay I'll start at the top and work my way down. I've got the Holy Barbarians of course Shiney. (Named after a famous book from the beat era by the way). You should check that album out Carolynanna. I'm not sure on Damien Rice, no offense. I have the first album. I'll admit the guy is talented, but his songs make me want to light some candles, slip into a warm bath (loofa in hand), and have myself a good cry.
Velvet Revolver? Good gym music maybe?

Posted - 08/19/2004 : 10:17:06 Hovercraft is a noise-rock three piece
very noisy, effects-laden guitars bass to kind of anchor things a bit drums providing the most "coherent" part of the music
