Well it is really fucking hot there. Instead of having siestas in the afternoon for a couple hours, they'll just take the whole siesta at once.

Plausible enough argument, erebus, even if I don't agree with it. But you do overreach on one count -- it's not just Democrats who aren't behind Bush. His approval rating right now is 29 percent.

There are plenty of reasons to dislike Bush but he has it right regarding Islamic extremism, and that, to my mind, will come to be seen as the defining issue of the current period. I realize the Dems will make an unfortunate amount of hay out of "Bush riled them up". My own opinion is that they were plenty riled even before 9-11 and it's a fine thing that somebody went out and finally hit them in the mouth. I don’t care at all whether Iraq had anything to do with 9-11. As far as I and Bush-Cheney-Rove are concerned, it’s all the same fucking swamp and it has to end.
The downside has been that the national and international wills have thusfar been lacking, so the cost has been higher than it need have been, but that will change. Even if the Dems are elected in ‘08, this will still need to be addressed, because it’s not going away. It was never “away” anyway, especially not during the Clinton years when it was incubating. The pacivity of Clinton just gave them a running start, just as will any future ‘08 Dem “diplomatic” administration. Enough UN and enough talk. Hell, even the EU is finally coming around on security matters. The UN had absolutely no moral or legal authority regarding the legitimacy of the Iraq War. Kofi Annan was a bad joke, and much of the next UN administration will consist of putting the UN right, if we're lucky.
Islamic crazies have been killing innocent people for, what, forty years, and it is long passed time for it to stop, completely. Islamic extremism is a problem in, what, forty or so nations around the world? It has to stop, and Bush will be remembered as the guy who had the balls to say enough is enough. We, meaning the West, are going to have to kill these guys, each and every one of them, one by one if necessary, and we’re going to have to put a permanent end to the Madrasas, for that is the root of the disease.
Obviously the West and America are not perfect, but, in my opinion, they are not the root cause of Islamic radicalism. There are over a billion Muslims, and if even a small percentage of them are being raised within a culture of madness it’s going to have to be squashed, the hard way most likely. I’m one of those who does in fact think the responsibility and solution lies with moderate Islam, but if I’m wrong to think that or if they don’t accept the responsibility, then it’s going to be up to the West, America, and Israel to get it done. There’s no alternative. It has to stop, completely and permanently.
My home page is Yahoo. Used to be that I trusted their news but for years now I’ve been reading mostly to see just what the online world is seeing. And day-in day-out over half the daily world news stories from Reuters, AP, and AFP deal with Islamist violence in one way or another, usually with this or that other mass killing. Enough. It stops. If killing is their language, then killing is THE language. If moderate Islam can make a difference, so much the better, but if not, then our hands are clean. When it comes to whatever the West determines to be necessary to end this, meaning extreme violence, if the radical Islamic rule is that there is no innocence, then there are no innocents: we need to fight and defeat them on their own terms if that's what it takes. We didn't ask for it, but we have to be up for it. They have to stop setting off bombs in the middle of unsuspecting people. There can be no compromise on that.
The West has been patient for too long, and that will still be true even if America chooses a Dem in ‘08. It’s still possible that Iran will finally take a turn towards the moderate, but even if so it will largely have been only because of American aircraft carriers off their coast. Music and violence are THE universal languages. Of course the extremists have always known that, and have acted on the basis of that knowledge. We’re just catching up. What’s amazing is that it’s taken this long for us to figure that out. Bush is the guy who dragged the West across the inevitable threshold, mostly kicking and screaming, when in fact we should have long since been more than ready to confront Islamic extremism. I, for one, am grateful to Bush for getting us into something that was long overdue.

Posted - 07/15/2007 : 00:22:15 I had good luck. I got to go on a date and see Ocean's Thirteen, which was amusing. I didn't think it was as good as either of the first two, but it wasn't bad.
Second, I got the new Spoon album, which I'm going to spam in every thread possible because it's really good. I've always liked them, but this new one is something special. And it;s only like 39 minutes, which has been discussed as just about the perfect album length (maybe they read this forum?).
Only bad news was that my favorite sushi restaurant got relocated due to the old location being demolished. We went to go there for dinner and it was just gutted. Apparently their last day was June 27th, but we never saw any notice. It was kind of sad because we've been going there for about 10 years :(

I've never been superstitious, and I'm still not, but I had a horrible day. I got in an argument with my flatmate on the way to the station which resulted in going back to my house to close the freaking bathroom window, thus making me late for work. This was compounded by a horrendously delayed and sweaty tube journey. I then got to work and discovered that I was going to get no work done all day due to having to man call centre hotlines insteado doing my work. That took the entire day and was irritating as hell. To top it all off, I wasted my entire lunch break chatting to Mel.
