What kind of music does he do? I found a couple of LP's at a local record shop, didn't know if I should get'em or not.

Yeah, I figured that one out when I listened to Rain Dogs. TW's version is quite good. Then again, the original is usually the best.

Adam -

Tom Waits wrote Downtown Train, which you would probably recognize as a Rod Stewart hit.

Give you one guess as to which version is superior.

Hope he plays Barcelona. If he does I'd imagine it'd be in Palau de la Musica, 5 mins from my place, tremendous place to see a show.

Yeah, they're completely different styles of music, so you really shouldn't try to compare them but like (or not like) each one for what it is.

I picked up Closing Time last night. It seemed more mellow than Rain Dogs. I will have to give it a few more listens. So far, I am liking RDs better.

My intro to Waits (that´s what they call him here, makes him sound more composerish) was Black Rider, still my favourite.

I just placed an order for Trout Mask Replica. This will be my first exposure to Beefheart.

I have four Waits albums(Raindogs, Bone Machine, Swordfish) and I tend to listen to Small Change more than the others lately.

That's exactly what I thought the first time I heard Tom Waits! If you love Rain Dogs, be sure to check out Swordfishtrombones, Frank's Wild Years, Bone Machine, The Black Rider (I've actually never heard this album so I don't know what it sounds like), Mule Variations, and Blood Money.

I really don't have an appreciation for new music, anyway.

Listen to Captain Beefheart too.

By the time you've familiarized yourself with Beefheart and Waits, you'll never want to hear 'normal' music again...well, you will, but you'll have a whole new appreciation for it...similar to having an appreciation for a language you don't understand.

History tailgates.

I'd start with Closing Time simply because it's his first album, but it is his most simple jazz album with almost a country-western feel to some of the songs and before he had a raspy voice, so although I love the album you may not like that kind of music. Rain Dogs is probably considered by most (not me) to be his best album so you may want to start with that one. So you'll get mixed responses, but I say Closing Time.

OK, I can get copies of Raindogs and Closing Time. Any input into which one to start with?

Warning : in Mule Variations, there is the scariest song I've ever heard, "What's he building". Each time I hear it, I think of Marc Dutroux, the Belgian paedophile.

Swordfishtrombones, Rain Dogs and Mule Variations are simply masterpieces.

Definitely buy them! It's impossible to put into words how good Tom Waits is. As for what kind of music he does, most of his pre-'80s lp's can be described as pretty straight-forward sleezy, night club jazz, with a lot of songs about beer and hookers. The year 1983 marked a major turning point in his career with the album Swordfishtrombones, which was the first album produced by Tom Waits (a HUGE difference from his other albums produced by Bones Howe). There's really no way to describe his music after this, except that it is very eccentric and probably unlike anything you've ever heard. His woice is one of, if not the, most gravelly, raspy voices I've ever heard and it really does justice to his style of music and is one of the main characteristics that easily distinguishes his music from that of other artists. All that being said, you may not like his music upon first listen, but just like Frank Black, if you give it time and repeated listens I guaruntee you won't be disapointed (and if you are, I'll be happy to take those LP's off your hands, as I only have three of his albums on vinyl).

i think this is as valid a platform as any to make a stink about musicians only seen as a lucerative commodity if they are 20. from an industry perspective.

what a load. mule variations illustrates beautifully that an artist who doesn't suck never stops.

time and wisdom, dig it.

and buy it, tw is sublime. so is sublime, i like them too.

love,

He does the intro and outro for Natural Born Killers, produced by T. Reznor.

I like how his music has changed. I like versatility in great musicians.

Watch the movie Down By Law, Tom's in it.

He is one of those artists you really just have to hear. You can describe his music to an extent but until you hear some of his albums, you aren't seeing the full picture.

Mule Variations was my first album.

actually.... which ones? the later albums he sounds all like he's been drinking nothing but whiskey and raw eggs all his life, I know it's a popularist choice but I can't get over how amazing mule variations is...
