was discussing the great cartoons of my (our) youth with a mate today, the ones that are never, ever shown anymore, and we came up with a list of the best... feel free to browse/add/comment...

Ahhhh, happy days. Transformers missed off as too commercial and obvious.

Captain N and the Game Masters...and the Super Mario Bros Super Show. Both fucking great. Don't forget the Zelda cartoons.

I guess I just wasn't made for these times.

I LOVED the Super Mario Bros. cartoons. I think the fact that I was seeing the Mario characters on TV made up for the fact that the animation and plots weren't that great. Mega Man came later, I think. You're talking about the one with the lame, repetitive theme song, right? ("Super fighting robot, Mega Man!")

While we're talking about Nintendo cartoons, what about Captain N? I think I saw just about every episode of that.

Many of these cartoons are from the 60's & 70's, but I won't quibble.

I can't believe that no one has mentioned the Mighty Orbots! It was a TMS produced show that transcended the genre by being fun & well made. I still find it to have one of the most distinct visual styles in the history of pop animation. Unfortunately, the production company was sued by Mattel, makers of the GoBots. Which is funny, since the GoBots were a piss-poor attempt to rip-off the Transformers. While the lawsuit was eventually found to be worthless, it had the desired effect of ending production on the Mighty Orbots. I have my 13 episodes on VHS, and can only dream of what might have happened. C'est la vie!

Go, Mighty Orbots!

A friend of mine had a poster of that 'Barbapapas' cartoon on his bedroom wall years ago, or something remarkably similar. There was also french cartoon that was shown in small, 5 minutes bursts about a little bird, called 'Le Piaf'. And how about those cartoons showing how the body works, with funny big-nosed charecters and an old dude with a big beard? Ulysses is still the best, though. Loved that metal soundtrack!

I can't remember any show called Barbapapas, sorry. But the title makes me want to discover more about it...

Ulysses 31 is the greatest 80's(or any decade) cartoon EVER. It was one of those Japanese/French co-productions(between DIC and TMS)that were so popular during the 1980's. A friend got volume 1 on DVD recently(volume 2 is out too), and as well as being totally nostalgic, it was thoroughly enjoyable to watch.("Telemachos!" "Father!" "By The great galaxies!" etc).

Anybody remember Wattoo Wattoo (or similar) - I think it must have been Scandinavian or East European. It was a weird bird fish thing that multiplied into hundreds of Wattoo Wattoos when it felt like it. We used to like it because it didn't make any sense.

Carolynanna - I'm almost reluctant to admit it now , but I LOVED the Shmoo. I still remember his crazy theme song too. Man... Shmoo ruled.

And this one isn't a cartoon either, and pretty sure IT WAS 70's... (thinking Captain Cavey WAS 80's), but did anyone watch Space Giants? For a long time my life was all about some Space Giants:

Lou Albano actually lives close by, that magnificent bastard.

2. You must be wearing Zubaz, 'cause you're daring to be different.
3. I am a man with 3 fingers...but that doesn't count my index finger nor my thumb.

Wacky Races did rule, but they were from the late 60s and early 70s. Furthering my argument that 80s cartoons sucked.
