Dear Friends,
I've been in a band about 6 months now, and we're having a super time writing originals & learning a few dumb covers. Our problem is the oldest one ever-the name. In every band I've ever been in, chosing the band name has always been the most agonizing process imaginable. Is it cool enough? Clever? Too clever? Arrrgghhhh, it's stupid, especially since it's the music that matters, not the name.

In the interests of our emotional well-being, I'm appealing to the most clever, most urbane, and most happening group of people that I know: the FB.net forum members. I'm pretty sure this has been done here before, but here goes...The Name My Band contest! The rules are simple. Post your suggestions. I know this is an opportunity to make up outrageously stupid & weird band names, and that's cool. I only ask that you try to balance each one with a "serious" name so that I'm getting both sides of your brain. The prize will be priceless, in the sense that it will be close to worthless. Humanitarians such as ourselves don't need petty wealth to motivate us to help others, anyhow. I'll choose my favorite at the end of the month or whenever this thread runs out of steam.

Currently, we're calling ourselves Sorry, but that's a little too tongue-in-cheek for some of the band members. We play a variety of material, most of it in a "heavy" style, almost metal. If you've heard the rockin' part of my Trompe Le Monde cover, it's kinda like that. I don't have any clips online, but I'll call you if you'd like and play stuff over the phone.

I'm sure there's been several decent names in our brainstorming sessions, but maybe we're too close to the source to know a good one when we hear it. Here's to hoping an independently created name is more palatable than the ones we've come up with. Folks, the ball's in your court. Please help!

Many thanks in advance, Bryan

there used to be a website that generated random band names, and the best two "big gay hat" and "the expensive lesbians" - most of them had a synonym for 'gay' in there, but i don't think they meant it in a biggoted way.

I was actually searching google for this thread when I found that NNDB thing. I sought out this thread because I thought "Jaffa Cakes" was a kick ass band name, and I wanted another run of made up bands names. So fire away kids.

The list is compiled. Thanks again for your contributions. If I survive the voting process, I'll announce (cue fanfare) the winner soon. Rock on!

What makes a good band name? Campiness (B-52's), reference (Eurythmics), originality, appropriateness (Stray Cats), memorability, inscrutablity (a name becomes just a name), B-Movie horror?

I think word games drive people bonkers ("The B-Sharps, get it? It's funny at first...")

Some band names I've always liked, Dayglo Abortions, Vav's Jungle, Fear, Suicidal Tendencies, Iron Maiden, Morally Bankrupt, Motorhead, The Pixies ("I imagined nasty little people about yeah-high").

Some band names I never liked, a-ha, INXS, Mega-Death (it's mega-fun, mega-excellent <very inside>), Was not Wuz, Journey.

Somewhere in this world I have a program from back in the TRS-80 days Dave Noisy should add to the site like this: http://www.elsewhere.org/cgi-bin/bandname which gave me "Fistful of Goats".

But I thought up this one, Absinthe of Alice.

I read some The Pixies quote and read that Kim had said "You can see from a stage how people are so weird. I love it when people come to see us. It's fellowship. We're like a big campfire they can all sit around!"

Campfire would be a cool name

"Gozzer" was a word for a pool of a sticky, disgusting substance in one of the more obscure Oz books. It strikes me as a good name for a punk band or something, though.

I really like the last two suggestions. Bang you're dead and Bam Thwok.

In fact I think Bam Thwok is officially mine now. Thanks.

Why not go all the way and "Bam Thwok"? It's not their best song, but I am really glad to see the Pixies all together creating something.

Frank's band is better than your band. Sing it.
