Ireland has always been a milk guzzling, cheese chompping nation since prehistoric times.

www.ravensgard.org/prdunham/irishfood.html

"Irish Diet Before the Potato"

"Milk, cheese, meat, cereals and some vegetables formed the main part of the Irish diet from prehistoric times up until the introduction of the potato". (Danaher, K 1992).

"Dairy Products"

"Milk was an important foodstuff and was consumed in large quantities; it might be drunk fresh, allowed to go sour and eaten as curds (whitemeats) or used to make a variety of cheeses and butter fresh or salted. Butter was allowed to go rancid and was stored in barrels in bogs. Cheeses made from sheep's milk were also quite common in Ireland. The use of rennet from the stomachs of milk fed animals was well known as a means of curdling the milk for cheese making. A small piece of the bag in the stomach was cut off and boiled in water to produce the rennet.

Slaves and workers were given the green milk to drink this was the milk left over (whey) after the production of the whitemeats. (Anon. 1673)

Milk was also boiled with Irish Moss (seaweed) and allowed to thicken then mixed with honey and eaten after the meal as the sweet course with season fruits. This sweet is still popular in many parts of Ireland to this day and this seaweed, Irish Moss (cairigin), is exported throughout the world. Two other edible seaweeds were used: Dilisc and Steamhchan".

Sorry to disappoint you, milk lovers, but there are some things you should know.

In short:

- Milk is indigestible by adults. The enzyme required to digest lactose (milk sugar) disappears from the digestive system after weaning. Moreover, the enzyme required to digest casein (milk protein) too disappears from the human intestine at the age of 3. This simply means that the large majority of adults is lactose / casein intolerant.

By the way, this double intolerance may cause various diseases, typically digestive and dermatological problems but also infections, diabetes, heart disease, and even breast cancer according to a recent study.

- Milk consumption doesn't make your bones and teeth stronger - it's a legend. Milk - especially cow milk - is so high in proteins that it causes an over-secretion of acidic gastric juices ; and the only way for the body to neutralize this over-secretion is actually to withdraw calcium from the bones. Some studies done in the 80s have showed that people who drink milk every day have the weakest bones of all, while people who avoid it have the strongest bones!!!

Not convinced? Remember that no animal - except man - drinks milk after it's weaned, and also that Orientals have always avoided milk, except as a purgative. Now you know why!

In conclusion, my friends:

Forget milk, it's pure shit
Sure you won't regret it!

I didn't intend to offense you, guys. I just meant to inform you. I'm a good man, ya know. I thought I could help you feel better, healthier. After all we form a kind of virtual family, don't we? ;)

That said, your reactions don't really surprise me, because I reacted the same way when I was advised by a doctor to stop drinking milk, 8 years ago. I wasn't really sick, I wasn't milk allergic. I just felt a bit tired, and suffered banal but recurrent stomach problems. The man told me: "If I were you, I'd stop drinking milk and eating cheese, just to see what happens". Stop drinking milk??? I was dismayed, almost shocked - at the time I was a milk lover, yeah, a real milk fan. And of course, I was convinced that 'milk is good for health'. Then the doctor asked: "Have you ever seen an animal - say a calf - drinking milk after it's weaned?" I confessed I had never seen that. He added, "So tell me why men should drink milk after weaning?" "Er... I answered, because we need calcium, I guess". He laughed. "Right, we need calcium, but calcium is everywhere, you know. Nuts, seeds, green vegetables are rich in calcium. Some seeds are even richer in calcium than milk."
I finally stopped consuming dairy products in 1998 and, believe me or not, I've never got sick again since then. Yeah, never. No cold anymore. No infection. No stomach problem. No headache. Nothing.

Later, as a journalist, I discovered that the only 'good' reason to keep drinking milk is to make the dairy lobby happy and prosperous.
As you probably know, the US and the EU produce too much milk, so much that our governments (that is, you and me) have to subsidize the milk industry to the tune of billions of dollars each year, and require milk and cheese in their school breakfast / lunch programs.
The American Association of Pediatrics says 60 percent of ear infections in kids under 6 years of age are milk-induced? No matter. Dr. Benjamin Spock, the U.S. leading authority on child care, says milk causes anemia, allergies, diabetes, and sets kids up for obesity and heart disease? Nevermind. Be nice. Be a good citizen. The dairy lobby loves you. The national economy needs you. So shut up and drink. Cheers!!

without milk, what are you going to eat Oreos or chocolate chip cookies with? or, i suppose anti-milk people don't eat Oreos or chocolate chip cookies either becasue they have sugar and preservatives in them, which are very baaaaaad. only shit-tasting, organic, soy oatbran cookies for you, right?

jesus christ, what is the world coming to?

this is making me so angry i need to go have a cigarette.

Wrong, Sir. Lactose / casein intolerance does not necessarily mean you get sick when you drink milk or eat cheese... It simply means that your body is unable to assimilate (and eliminate) milk sugar and proteins.

It seems your friend had a lactose allergy, which is different.

Lactose intolerance can easily go unnoticed, but in all cases, and like any type of intolerance, it results in an accumulation of toxins which may later cause various diseases. Sorry but it's a proven fact. Another proven fact is the disappearance, or quasi disappearance, of the main enzymes (lactase and rennin) required to digest milk, after weaning.

If you don't trust 80s studies, have a look at this site: http://www.nomilk.com/ ...

I only really "drink" milk with my cereal. I actually don't like the taste of milk when it's flying solo. It's gotta be with cereal or freshly baked chocolate chip cookies.

If so, nope, I've never broken anything.

Also, it sometimes hurts when I cut my finger nails because they seem tough. Milk must make my nails extra heavy duty.

It's best to cut your nails after a warm shower, that way they are softer.

Yeah, I mean I'm 21 and I have milk almost everyday. If I couldn't digest it wouldn't I be puking it up every morning with my cereal? Or maybe at least getting stomach aches? I never feel icky after drinking milk.

Also I've never broken a bone in my body. So I could care less what studies say because .. well frankly my bones are not weaker from drinking milk. And also, c'mon, studies done in the EIGHTIES? If you would have said the 90s it might have backed up your case more. Not sure if we can trust anything that came out of the 80s.

That isn't true. SOME adults are lactose intolerant, definitely not the great majority.

SpudBoy Posted - 05/09/2004 : 10:57:13
I really don't see what all the fuss is about. I grew up around dairy cattle, and it was family tradition to maintain some weeping sores on the cows to suck on when we got overheated working in the fields. The milk was for market, you know...off limits.

FYI - 25% of the world's population retains the lactase(enzyme) production levels required to digest lactose. Only 3% of the world's population have allergy issues with casein. The calcium issue is twofold - first the milk calcium is not in a form easily absorbed by the body, unlike in broccoli, beans, leafy greens (watch for those pesticides, even BT), or fish with edible bones (not too much though - heavy metals and all). Secondly, the consumption of *any* animal protien, or caffiene, or salt, will leach calcium from your system. Choose accordingly.
There are benefits and detriments to everything. Just be aware of them, and how they mesh with the rest of your particular varibles. Upon further consideration, though, maybe we should switch...http://www.hinduonnet.com/thehindu/2000/05/11/stories/08110004.htm

Disclosure: I drink milk regularly, but stick with the organic non-BGH/antibiotic/etc kind. I'll drink pus over chemical waste any day.
