Having just got ASDL I am going through a downloading frenzy, however I have come across downloaders block, as the thought of having a vast amount of music at my fingertips has blown my mind. Also being in China I don't really get to hear about the latest decent albums that have been released...

What decent albums have been released in the last two years, or what albums are a necessity for anyones collection (Obviously no need to include Pixies / FB stuff as I brought that stuff over with me when I came to China)?

Just heard this one yesterday. Agreed.

I picked up the latest Ben Kweller. Not as good as Sha Sha but its got some good songs. I just introduced myself to the Mountain Goats-We shall all be healed. Not too shabby either.

The Decline of British Sea Power, by British Sea Power.

Oh, and another vote for the Dears. Though I prefer End of a Hollywood Bedtime Story to No Cities Left. It's Gainsbourgalicious.

I agree with Malax and mclusky - the difference between me and you is i'm not on fire is shaping up to be one helluva album as well.

True but there are two problems:
1st You can't prove it was them
2nd Even if you could prove that they deliberately spread viruses or malware by labeling them as frequently downloaded files, how would you explain the fact that you got a virus thinking you were downloading copyrighted material?

Talking about p2p, the European Union just passed a law which makes downloading stuff legal if for personl use (no reselling, pubblic performance, multiple copies etc). Uploading is still illegal though.

For those interested in their privacy\security in p2p, though there is no 100% guaranteed protection, there are 3 simple things to do that eliminate most threats:

1- A good and frequently updated antivirus program. RIAA and it's friends have infested p2p networks with fake files and viruses. Don't trust every file you dl even if it seems harmless an mp3 or .txt file.
2- Get a good firewall like Zone Alarm Pro and make sure that you block from accessing the net all the programs that you don't need.
3- Get Peerguardian. It's a program that when you use a p2p network denies access to ip's that are known to belong to corporations or law enforcement agencies. It's free and you can have it here : http://methlabs.org Here you will find all sort of information about p2p.

Liars are great! I only have the first album "They threw us in a trench and put a monument on top" which I really like, but I know I'll get that new one you mention some day hopefully soon.

I saw seem do a live show on tv and they ran around playing different instruments, and as you say the guitars, samples and drums were really cool. Their one of those bands I've always meant to get something by. Listening to Ween's Quebec at the moment, lots of people recommending it, but I'm still hooked on The Mollusc. The start of Transdermal Celebration reminds me of the start of Caribou?

Thats cool.. I pretty much transfer them to a different folder anyway. Getting adsl over here has been the greatest thing since sliced bread, the amount of music I now have access to is phenomenal.

SInce you're in China you're out of the jurisdiction of the riaa, bpi, and whatever the fuck those canucks have. I'm pretty sure China isn't doing anything about "illegal" downloaders. I'd imagine they'd be more concerned with the more immediate pirate dvd problem.
Cheeseman1000 Posted - 04/29/2004 : 07:46:24
There was a thingy in the paper the other day about the BPI (British Phonographic Industry, UK equivalent to RIAA) starting to crack down on illegal file sharing. Basically, the gist of the article is that as long as you're not a serial uploader, you should be OK. Their theory is, if they target uploaders, sooner or later there won't be anything to download, ending the problem.

What I'd recommend is simply not to keep your mp3's or whatever in a Shared Folder, such as you have with Kazaa. Transfer any files you have to a different folder and they become untraceable for anyone attempting to trace your activity.

I'm not sure if this is the RIAA's line as well, but I think its a similar ethic.

Speedy, that would be cool if I could do that. Remember to give me a shout when you want me to send you that Frank Black live gig for the FTP.

Can you get in shit for downloading stuff? From what I have heard of Pig Lib it's great, better than the first Malkmus album if you ask me.

Sir Rockabye, the only Hot Snakes I heard is Suicide Invoice, so that's the one I recommend. HIGHLY recommend. There's so many great guitar parts on that album, and the tone of the guitars is incredible. Just wait till you listen to the first song. You'll swear a swarm of bees are attacking you.

Soulseek does the job.

Roger Sisters - gggggggggreat debut album.
Franz Ferdinand
Air - the last one (forgot it's name)
Sonic Youth - new album on soulseek (thinks it's called nurse)
Phoenix - good one

Classic stuff;

Beach Boys - Smile. Extreme pop.
mulatu - anything. Instrumental soul/jazz from ethiopia (early 70's) with mysterious tones. Awesome.

Hey therewererumours!

Yeah Heroes to Zeroes in the beta bands latest album and it is definetley worth buying. Their vocalist Steve Mason has an unusual voice but it really works with their tunes. Their percussion is amazing and their guitars and samples are sublime. They will have hits, and if not they will be another un-noticed gem. Check out "wonderful", "out-side" and "pure for". Like Kevin Keegan you will love it!!

I've been using soulseek myself for a while now, but lately I've been getting paranoid. Does anyone know how safe it is? It sure would suck to get sued. Do bands still even sue anymore? God damn Metalica.

Pig Lib's cool, but a little jammy. I prefer malkmus' first solo myself.

And Jet? They're pretty much a cover band that doesn't play covers. Ever song sounds like someother famous song.

And I'll repeat: Soviet Kitsch by Regina Spektor is incredible. Check it out on soulseek. Especially Ghost of Corporate Future and Chemo Limo. Great stuff.

Some like wine and some like hops but what I really love is my scotch

These may not be recent enough, but they're are the newest things I've got: The Throwing Muses album from last year has some of their best songs ever;
also David Byrne "Look Into The Eyeball"- his best since "Uh-Oh"- he's always better when he's relaxed and not trying too hard to be weird.

I said, "You have no hard-on till that aching fills your chest"/ Good-bye Lorraine

My wife loves Suicide, but I don't get it.

Like Sigue Sigue Sputnik on valium.

Downloaded some clips of the Liars @ http://www.liarsliarsliars.com/downloads.html

Very, very cool.

On a couple of the tracks I'm reminded of Whitehouse, which is pretty freaky.

Ha ha, Sigue Sigue Sputnik were great. The Liars first album was pretty different from their new one, I like the directions they take with their sound. I espcially like that they were influenced by the Silver Apples.
