In the jungle, the mighty jungle, the lion sleeps tonight.

Anywho! I think I just realized another reason why I think most of the music of today sucks, especially compared to oldies. Because no one uses the amazing vocal layering anymore! I mean, listen to the Beach-Boys...amazing stuff! The only exception to this would be Pinback, and hey, they rock. I think that's why "I Bleed" and "I'm Amazed" (Don't forget "Silver"...oh wait, I don't want to have people Silver bash some more...) are so powerful...the vocals of Kim and Charles intertwining and looping here and there throughout the entire song..they compliment eachother beautifully. I need to download "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" right now, though...it's stuck in my head...

I love female backing vocals and I Bleed has always been one of my favorites. I love how Chuck goes high and Kim low at the end.

You should check out Azure Ray. Those are some beautiful ladies with beautiful voices.

Even bands with a really good singer need backing vocals. Two of my favorite Radiohead songs, "Polyethylene" and "Paranoid Android", are NOTHING without the backing vocals. And, think about Pixies -- "Distance Equals Rate Times Time" needs Kim's backing vocals or the song is feces.

I do see your point actually wolf man. I saw them live once at a festival, and to be honest, they do have some good harmonies going on.

I might catch hell for pointing it out but Blink 182 can pull out some good harmony stuff from time to time. I really liked some of the stuff going on in the first single to their newest record, though I can't stand the new one and their song with Robert Smith on the album isn't half bad either.

I totally agree. At ATP I saw alot of bands that used vocal harmonies withing the band...00100 used some, sort of, but in a slightly different way...and many more as well.

I find it fascinating, watching and hearing the way two or more voices can intertwine...

Yeah, most bands think their lead singer is powerful enough to carry the job of vocalist all by himself. Look at bands like Nickelback and Creed... their vocalists suck and they rarely have ANY BGVs. Bands need good backing vocals.

On a side note I really can't stand "The Lion Sleeps Tonight"

Try TMBG's version of it on Apollo 18. And while you're there listen to Dinner Bell. Second vote for this song.

I asked this guy I was working with what bands he liked. Nickelback and Creed. I asked him why so many people don't like them. He said "It's just Pure rock and roll." I had to turn my head because I was starting to crack up.

I must say the Unicorns have some great harmony work and some great dual vocals that go back and forth, very fun.

Of course! That's the whole point! A lot of the songs I'm working on have at least two part vocal harmonies. One of the songs I recorded recently I did 3 vocal tracks for.

wouldnt it be more apppropriate requirement for them to be able to sing in harmony with yourself, darling?
