After You Ain't Me and Hey, tribute CDs to Frank and Pixies by members, what could be next?

Does original songs dedicated to Frank and/or Pixies by members would be a good idea?

Frank already did this kind of things:
Ramona (Ramones)
The Man Who Was Too Loud (Jonathan Richman)
Cult Of Ray (Ray Bradbury)

I believe there's some other but i can't figure it right now.

Does this kind of thing would be too difficult?
Non-musicians/Good-at-writing could associate with Bad-writers/musicians.

And, does songs about Frank/pixies already exits?

Note:
I already posted my suggestion on the Musicians sections, nobody answered. May be active members don't read it, or may be my idea is completly stupid.

I'm still chatting with Tim (A4C) who mastered and helped out with the last ones. I'll be back here later.

If the "distribution model" for these FB.net tribute "albums" is not broken, I don't think there's any compelling reason to fix it.

Yes, the way these FB.net downloads are done is technically infringing.

However, after the promise of the limited scope, and the insistence that people sign up on the boards in order to have initial access to the material, this site has been given Charles' and Ken Goes' blessing.

That's not a blessing any of us would like to see rescinded as a result of overstepping our bounds.

Let's try to make the next FB.net tribute album a better version of what has already been done. The basic groundrules set up by Dean and Dave, et al, seem quite evenhanded and magnanimous.

Let's simply retain that foundation and strive to make the whole thing run smoother and with less hassle for those in charge of overseeing the process.

And, let's not forget that once anyone has downloaded these tracks officially from us or copied them from a friend, they can set them up on their own personal or public web radio station or streaming jukebox with relative impugnity.

It's not worth 4AD's or Spime Songs' time to chase down piddly shit like that with cease and desist e-mails.

Charles and Ken certainly knew that would likely happen to some extent, so they must be fairly tolerant of such low-rent stuff, as long as it is not officially endorsed by FB.net.

Just my two cents.

Who cares about Copyright?

Okay. This is what dmusic.com has to say.
http://www.dmusic.com/tos/uploads

I don't know too much about copyright, but I don't believe this site is infringing on anything. If somebody wants to look it over...
prozacrat Posted - 05/15/2004 : 15:19:25
I seem to remember when submitting songs to dmusic.com or iuma.com they protect the songs through some copyright means or another. I'll look at that. And I'm referring to original songs, too. I don't have much experience with putting cover songs on a site like this. I do remember with mp3.com, you could only put original music on your site, but they had a separate one if you had recorded cover songs and wanted to put them on the site. So they must have had all their bases covered. I'll look into the two sites that I'm a member of and get whatever copyright info I can.
El Barto Posted - 05/14/2004 : 15:41:30
I think regardless, it's a violation of copyright, be it public or private. No profit is made in either situation. Our tributes are technically public...they're made available to the public; granted, there are a few hoops to jump through (signing up and logging in). If we only distributed them to, say, a list of people...that's a bit more private. At least we have the A-OK from the higher ups to do it, so it's one step closer to making it a little more legal, but either way it's the same situation.

Wouldn't this be in violation of copyrights?

We're allowed to distro these semi-privately...but there would be some serious issues with having them publicly available..

It does. :)

I'll look into that depending on what happens with our FTP. Maybe we'll do both. Let me think about it...

Oh I'm definately thinking of that as a way of promoting the site. I don't know what a station like that would be called, but it could be specifically promoting bands who share the common bond that is frankblack.net, thus promoting frankblack.net as well. "Hey, we have more songs on the internet now. Check them out. It's at the frankblack.net station on blah blah blah mp3 site..." Etc. etc. We could still host tribute albums, but also sponsor an mp3 page like that. Only not sponsor in the sense that frankblack.net pays for it, because most sites like that are free. Or at least in my experience. I love what I've heard of the tribute CDs this site has put together, and I want more of them, and want to be involved in more of them. I'd also like to have a website where I can find original music by other people I've met on this forum as well. That's all. Does this sound slightly more lucid?
Cult_Of_Frank Posted - 05/13/2004 : 22:28:09
Well, of course we like the idea of hosting the tribute albums as it's a way of promoting the site. It's something to consider, though... I'll have to look into this more when we get things fired up.

My band would be down for whatever may come next. It'd be lovely to get over that copyright snafu and just put out a compilation of original works by forum members. But something that could be similar in significantly easier to put together would be this:
Back when mp3.com wasn't dead, you could start a "radio station" type thing. Just put on songs that were on the web site that you liked. I'm sure another mp3 website has a similar feature. Members could just submit their tunes to one of these web sites and someone could add tracks to it, or oversee it. It could be pretty easy I think. I may look into it. My band is currently on iuma.com and dmusic.com, both of which are nice. Does that sound lucid/possible?
Cult_Of_Frank Posted - 05/13/2004 : 14:01:33
I was thinking for me we'd just put on I Dream Of Deanie and use the original music. :)

Also, it's probably for the best this didn't happen. Paul (McCartney) and I were practicing your song in the millenium dome last night and got some noise complaints, so we had to shut it down.

I think the next tribute should be a mix between Pixies and FB songs which haven't arleady been "A-sided" on the previous 2 albums.

Yeah, if we do another tribute it should be an entire album covered in order...I brought this up a while back, doing each album one at a time. That would be neat.

Dean,

For whatever it's worth, here's my suggestion for the format of the next tribute disc:

"Show Me Your Tribute" - an album which replicates (in order) the Show Me Your Tears LP and nothing else.

Since there are so few songs on that record, you'd likely wind up with multiple versions of them all, and thusly, a ton of different and unique interpretations left over as "b-sides."

Regardless of what made the "official cut," folks could even wind up making two or three different "Show Me" tribute running orders by compiling their own favorite version of each track from among all that were submitted.

Just an idea.

Get some well-deserved rest, and thanks for offering to spearhead another herculean effort...

That reminds me, LBF, I have a bit of a minor announcement to make in the Hey thread...

I think I will do another CD, but it will still be a few months away. I'm going to try a different schedule this time to see how well that works and hopefully alleviate some of the pressure/time demands from me. I'd start it sooner, but I think that we all need a good long break from the last two and I'm currently working on recording our band's first CD and prepping for some shows.

Which also reminds me, Tim, what's the status on the Clootie CD? How is that going/did it go?

The only problem with submitting original songs is the copyright side of things. We don't want people pinching other people's songs!!!
