My top three (in no particular order) were:

Goonies
The Sandlot
Spaceballs

I was obsessed with those movies. I think I'll have to go on a couch-potato binge and watch them all tonight. What were yours?

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang scared the living shit out of me! I refused to get in our car because i was afraid it would fly if we started singing! My parents still joke about it to this day. Cars belong on the ground!

It's about this family of inbreds that lives up in the hills and when people breakdown along the highway that goes through the area, they torture and kill them. I think they eat them too. I don't remember much, I was about six when I saw it. I think it's by Disney. It came out in the early seventies. It wasn't quite as popular as Bambi (no toy line or anything).

Do you murder people? Were you in 'Wrong Turn' playing yourself?

That's some disturbing stuff to be watching as a 6 year old.

It truly was some disturbing stuff to be seeing as a six year old. My parents were divorced and my father used to take me to the drive in to see these flicks. My grandmother use to freak out when I'd come home and tell her I had seen Soilent Green or The Hills Have Eyes. The most disturbing was Alice Sweet Alice. It was Brooke Shields first movie appearance. Real trippy stuff. Gave me nightmares for awhile. If you can hunt it down it's actually pretty good.

I actually prefer Gremlins 2 'cos it's bloody hilarious. Especially the one who drinks the potion that makes him super intelligent.

When I was a wee one, I loved the SW movies(no surprizes there) But E.T and Close Encounters also had a big impact. And E.T scared me, too! But I could'nt watch the end of Close Encounters for years, 'cos I was scared of the aliens....also, I was obsessed with Gremlins and Ghostbusters, particularly Gremlins. Before I saw them, I had these cool movie tie-in magazines. Ah, is'nt childhood so strange?

Oh, I thought of a few more

An American Tale (depressing)
The Land Before Time (depressing)

God, there were some really fuckin depressing kids movies back then. No wonder there's a generation of warped adults.

Well, I will just generalize and pick other favorites from when I was "growing up".

Dirty Dancing (I saw this movie four times in the theater. I was obsessed. I saw it recently and was like "eh, what a dumb movie!" Oh well)
The Princess Bride
Grease
The Little Mermaid (by Disney. My best friend and I would watch this all the time and sing every song)
Pretty Woman (the BF and I watched this endlessly)
Say Anything (still love this one!)
Willy Wonka
The Wizard of Oz
The Breakfast Club & Sixteen Candles & Pretty in Pink (viva Molly Ringwald)
The Lost Boys (another one I watched ENDLESSLY)
Young Guns (see above; it's all about Kiefer)
When Harry Met Sally (this seems kind of mature to me now, but I thought it was great when I was about 14)

I know there are more...

Good point from ramona but I unfortunately cannot remember very much at all from when I was 6 or 7, never mind the movies I may have watched. Anyone else have this problem? (no ageist jokes from Cheeseman please)

What are we talking about as "childhood"? I am picking movies from when I was like 6 and 7 but there is a whole other list from when I was like 13 and 14. I didn't see a lot of the movies listed here until I was older, and even if I DID see them at 8 or 9, I am sure I didn't know what was funny or good about them.

When I was much younger, I was a huge fan of all the John Hughes films. I watched The Breakfast Club at least once a week. Some of his other films I really liked were Weird Science, Ferris Bueller, and Uncle Buck. Just off the top of my head, those were some of my favorites. I was also known to enjoy The Bad News Bears from time to time.

Oh there are so many that I left off my list that have been mentioned since. It's all coming back now.

Must agree with Jim though on Grease. Great film, great songs.

wilhelm

How can you call Carrie a bad horror flick? It's an awesome movie by my fave director ever!

Denis

Aw sorry Denis, you're right it is a good film. I just lumped it together with the hundreds of crummy horror flicks which I saw as a kid. Phantasm is also a cult classic and Piranha was scripted by John Sayles (yeah I checked on IMDB, THE John Sayles). The Shining also was one of those classic horror pics I saw at the time. We had to watch these film at friend's houses when no adults were around because they all had 18 restrictions. The films were on Betamax so it could easily be hidden underneath ones T-Shirt.

The Swarm

ah, the Swarm.
i remember seeing this when i was about 6 or 7 for some reason and i ended up having nightmares about killer bees for many many years.
this movie produced the only nightmares i have ever had.

they always involved me riding my motorbike in a paddock on our farm and getting chased by the bees.

i then went and got it out last year to watch again and was flabbergasted that i could have gotten scared by such a crappy movie.
it was atrocious.
i was really disappointed actually...i wanted the nightmares to have been caused by something genuienly scary.
