So how about them? I say they should have called it quits after Some Girls. See exhibits A-Emotional Rescue and B-Steel Wheels as evidence for my case.

P.S. I just realized haven't been on here in a frickin' long time . . . wow . . .

I'm way under 70 so yeah, sure, I am saying that.

I might smile the first time I see a 'I can't get no satisfaction' bumper sticker on the back of an elderly scooter. But that's it. After that they're on their own.

Sure, though that sounds like a typical Keith Richards easy answer. I'd say they're on a par. It's just as ridiculous to nod away uncritically at a bunch of old black guys as it is for a bunch of old white guys to still be doing their rock thing. Ridiculous bands are as ridiculous as their fans.

If you think I'm being a snob, well the Stones never talked about their music being life changing. They were always about getting bums on seats in exchange for a good night's entertainment. To me bands like the Clash were way more ridiculous.

The 32-year-old me does not agree with the 23-year-old me. When I was 27 or so I listened to the Stones "Between The Buttons" and it floored me. A lot of classic songs are to be found on there. I have since heard the poppier tracks on "Metamorphosis," a collection of outtakes and rarities, and know that the Stones had some great shit. Just to update.

I recently saw Rock and Roll Circus for the first time and though it was typical of the 60s - horrible wank!, the last couple of songs by the Stones themselves were amazing, but only for Jagger's charisma. I never knew he had that kind of charisma. So I think I finally get it now. But that isn't saying much. Threads like these don't help me get back to ignoring them.

I bet "You Can't Always Get What You Want" with the London Youth Choir sounded great. I've always loved that song, especially the choir and French horn at the beginning.

Musically, I think they lost the plot after TATTOO YOU. While UNDERCOVER OF THE NIGHT has it's moments, the production is a shocker, it sounds really dated whith those synthetic drums that were so "now" in 1983.

On another level, I really can't stand the fact they have become such greedy corporate whores, with outrageous ticket prices and an overloaded merchandising network.

On the solo side of things: I really like Keith Richards two records. Mick Jagger's I can take it or leave it. Not great songwriting and over-produced to the max.

It'd be wrong." Then they could have given up on music and all gone seperate ways, on to do better things like bag groceries or be crossing guards, and not have contaminated the ears of the public with their fucking horrible music for years and years to come.

This has got to be the most idiotic thing I've ever read on this forum. The Stones I'll admit have put out some real tripe in their uncomfortably long career and have long overstayed their welcome at this point, but the majority of their late 60's to mid 70's output is some of the best rock ever made.

Mrs Denis bought me "Beggars Banquet" last week and it's quite amazing. Side B is slightly less good (Prodigal Son and Salt of the Earth are a bit subpar IMO) but the first 6 songs are top notch. Stray Cat Blues ain't bad either.
Reading this thread again I'm quite surprised by all the negative comments about them.

When I was in college one of my friends met Ronnie Wood in a Dublin nightclub (the Kitchen fyi) and he gallantly asked her to accompany him to the toilet. She declined.

I use to jam with Ronnie Woods a couple of decades ago when he lived in Mandaville canyon (Brentwood). He had a cool studio at his house but I thought his guitar playing sucked pretty bad. Even now I don't consider him a real Rolling Stone. (which is crazy because he's been in the band ages longer that Brian) His wife Jo was very attractive, friendly, and a great hostess. They were both very small people. Bobby Keys (sax) is a BLAST to party with. Hung out/partied with Keith LONG ago when he was staying at Danko's house in Malibu. I'm surprised Keith outlived Danko. Wayne Perkins who played with them a little when they were doing "Miss you" was a half way decent guitarist. They sort of suck worse than ever but still sell out and command top dollar. NO band from this era will ever be half as successful in the long run.
Newo Posted - 03/28/2004 : 05:46:26
I love Exile On Main Street very much but I don't think the Stones said anything in the last 30 years they hadn't said before. And it's weird to see a band entirely unaffected by any recent developments in music whatsoever, like a musical vacuum or something.

I know someone who like Bridges to Babylon, but I've never listened to it. Then again, I'd pay to see them if they showed at a much smaller venue for a really cheap ticket price and if Brian Jones came back to life and the original lineup started playing songs before 1974.

The Stones are my absolute favorites, but if they aren't your thing that's cool. They are not horrible live. Sure, there are nights when things may not click, but they can also be brilliant. Trust me, I've got loads of bootlegs. Cheers.

To me the Rolling Stones are one of those bands that seriously rock, but there's nothing really overly special about them and it's kind of difficult to just sit down and listen to them. They're great road music though.

As for the comment about there being nothing new left for rock music, I would say that nothing new is being done, but there is an endless world of possibilities and I'm sure sometime in the not-so-distant future some good band will come along with their own original style that sounds amazing and blow us all away. Also, change and originality are not always necessarily good things. Sometimes it's better just to take something that's already been done and expand on it and make it your own thing.

I never really got into the Stones much at all, but there are various songs of theirs that I really like. Angie is such a beautiful song, and may very well be my favorite of theirs. I never really sat down and listened to an entire album of theirs. Maybe I should, cause I might just like it.

I agree with Homer though. There really isn't much left to do with rock music as a whole...it's just repeating and repackaging itself. I don't think rock music will ever be like it was back in the 50s and 60s when it was fresh and exciting and "forbiddden." I think Nirvana was probably the last big thing to happen to rock and roll, and that was over 12 years ago. Don't get me wrong, there are still amazing albums being released, but nothing new is being done.

The Stones aren't really my thing. I think it's largely Mick Jagger's voice that turns me off from them. They're not horribly bad or anything, but I tend to think they're a bit overrated.

Back in the '60s, payola was still frowned upon. Nowadays it's the norm. Market positioning determines what gets played on the radio. There was a Frontline on PBS a year or two ago called "The Merchants of Cool". Quite an interesting episode:

Oh yeah you're right on that one. Our mainstream is crap. The charts are full of crap.

As for The Stones, well do you trust your dad on music? Is he a musician like mine? Musicians spot bad fellow performers better. And well, my dad's harder than yours!!!

Hehe!!! Sorry couldn't resist that. Just going back to my childhood. Actually I don't think my dad could fight his way out of a paper bag. He is too small (and yet I am 6ft 3ins - even the milkman is not tall) and a peaceful man.
