Was he great or have I just drunk too much wine...havn't come across anything as heartgripping as tex "Needle in the hay"..."Angeles" etc. since ...the Smiths first album...or "The Sad Punk" or "Dog gone" or "I'll be blue" or the Iggy Pop&Peaches duett...

For newcommers I'd recommend XO or Figure 8 to start with, as they're probably the easiest albums to get into. One song that always gets me is A Fond Farewell off From A Basement On The Hill.

elliott kicks ass at the piano. http://youtube.com/watch?v=_qH2SmPth0A i heard he could play that when he was 10, but he quit to play soccer.

no, just the chords. there's some sheet music here. You should be able to figure out what would be the plucking part on guitar pretty easily. I did and I never took lessons or anything.

Elliott is pretty much all I listen to anymore. Roman Candle's my favorite fo sho, esp. No Name #1.

Some of those bootlegs LBF linked to are really funny, like the one where he says "I can't stand up, cos I don't have no knees. Heh heh... That wasn't funny."

New theory: is KOK Elliott Smith?
trobrianders Posted - 10/13/2007 : 06:18:22
Nirvana were blameless by and large. The Good Will Hunting guys were not. I remember GWH as utterly cynical. That they'd hide their horns and tail behind the beautiful innocence of Elliott Smith...

I know a couple of people who like the movie so maybe I misread it. It's been years. Well, delete mine while you're at it.

Have you ever seen Good Will Hunting? I think there is something like 7 or 8 Elliott songs in that movie. That's kind of like introducing frank as the guy nirvana said the pixies are good. Toss up, good will hunting vs nirvana. drunk, deletion imminent

The kcrw appearance was a good re-introduction to Elliot Smith. Wise head on those shoulders. I normally go for the earlier sparser work of guys like these but I really liked what he did on xo and Figure 8. Bad he's gone.

I read an FB quote somewhere sometime along the lines that if he wants to cry he listens to Needle in the Hay.

If you're new to his music, you really can't go wrong with anything. Each CD does seem to have a unique sound and feel to it, you'll find as you listen to each one.

I still haven't listened to the last 2 CDs that have been released since his death. they're like rare b-sides and unrealesed songs. For some reason, I just haven't had much of a inclination to listen to that stuff. I guess I'm saving it for some reason.

As usual, I'm listening to something new only because I heard Frank Black liked it. I downloaded two of Elliott's albums this morning from eMusic, and "Between the Bars" is the song that stuck out the most for me after one listen. So I found an existing thread, made a vague comment, and waited to see who else might be listening to this guy right now.

Hope that explains things, LBF.

Please pardon me, for these my wrongs.

Either/or is my favorite one too. After hundreds of listens, I'm still not sick of any of the songs, although I usually skip the last two in order to start it all over again sooner.

His website is awesome, Sweet Adeline, full of awesome stuff about him and the music and fan artwork and poems and stuff like that.

If you Like Between the Bars, then you'll also probably like Angeles on the same CD. Of course videos all available on youtube.

There are 88 Bootlegs at Archive.org

I don't know why you brought this topic up? simply to say something random? I don't know what you know or don't know, but if you didn't know the above you should check it out.

And what's up with the "I tend to like," is that just an expression? It implies that sometimes you don't like that song, but most of the time you do. I'm trying to be nice.

I tend to think "Between the Bars" is a good song.

To the best of my knowledge, Marvin Gaye´s father wasn´t his girlfriend either.

No. John Lennon, Jeff Buckley, Otis Redding are amongst those with no girlfriend help to shuffle them off this mortal coil.

Although I am sure being the clever trousers you all are, you could tie each one of those to a female in some way.

Isn't that so with every famous person who dies though???

Wouldn't it just be better if nobody committed suicide? Even artists you don't like.

"Needle in the hay" is definitely one of the most beautiful songs. I think there is a quote by Frank Black about this song...It is a very simple song, with a simple structure, melody and lyrics, yet really great.

I was really sad when he committed suicide. There are so many artists who could have done it instead (I won't give any names). I never understood people who kill themselves - how is it posssible to kill yourself? It's crazy.

I like Roman Candle the best, Last Call and Drive all over town are the rawest most heart wrenching songs i've ever heard.

Needle in the hay and Christain brother make me cry every time i listen to them.

For anyone who hasn't discovered Elliott you're really missing out, make it a prority.

Yep, Either/Or is his best I'd say.

I think my favorite is actually the self titled. Or either/or.

You think thats good, just you wait, Stewpot.
I'm probably on my own in this, but I reckon Fig.8 is his least good album. You've got to listen to X/O and Either/Or, they are simply stunning.

Yeah, I was around a friends house the other week and I saw that he had Figure 8, so I recorded it and have been listening to it ever since. Ive not heard Needle in the Hay yet, but will get it downloaded asap. You cannot listen to his stuff without feeling sad knowing that he killed himself.... great musician.
