As a kid, I could be hyperactive, but I was never particularly motivated. I sometimes have to wonder how certain traits like those get grouped together. I mean, hey, I'm also incredibly shy, but not particularly quiet.

I'm not mad. Especially when your ignorance is so obvious. I don't know why you'd express such an opinion when you know and we know you didn't know what the hell you're talking about. But I have gotten used to the majority of people who have an opinion on ADD not knowing what the hell they're talking about and desperately wanting a way to blame me as the parent for his difficulties. Maybe it'll make you feel better to know that your ignorance is typical.
They don't process things differently due to excess energy. That is just ridiculous. They process things differently due to differing brain chemistry. They lack in neurotransmitters. Those chemicals send messages across the synapses. So they miss alot of brain signals and messages. I've seen in my son (who has absolutely no hyperactivity in fact he's quite unmotivated) that he does not think linearly at all. It takes him longer to get to the conclusion and thats time they just don't give him in school. It is difficult to watch as a parent some of the emotions they go through. It is hard to know that everyone else around you is understanding everything and you're not. Like I said, a state of perpetual confusion. And that you have to put in more time and effort than everyone else just to underachieve them. That everything is just plain harder for you than everyone else. I think alot of the hyperactivity is due to poor impulse control. Poor impulse control is due to the lack in neurotransmitters. The drugs that they give kids is mainly speed but it helps get the messages across. It will increase those neurotransmitter chemicals. So its not going to take away hyperactivity, its going to aid in creating a 'normal' brain chemistry. A person with ADD is not going to feel like they've taken speed when they take the ritalin, a person without ADD will (if you already have enough of those chemicals, more is going to fuck you up). They can also be lacking in seratonin, my son is prone to depression all the time. He has tried the drugs in the past. Like I said, puberty has changed him quite a bit, changed some of his brain chemistry I believe. Let's say you had a kid with ADD and he was having such a difficult time not being 'normal'. If that kid asks to try the drugs what would you say? What if the drugs actually worked?
What's really cool though is that he's got a gift for music. He's totally wicked with his guitar. And his band teacher says the material they learn for the trumpet is too easy for him. Science and math is a totally different story.

I could never have been able to say that as nicely as you have. Thanks, C. It is always great to find someone who understands. There are so many people I talk to that think there is no such thing as ADD.
My son has never tried to play instruments, but he is a natural athlete and he is a master at PS2 games.

Posted - 10/22/2007 : 03:37:00 it just states that they talk about different things...i.e. science cannot or does not pertain to questions about morality, ethics and beliefs... and religion does not answer questions about gravity, motion, physical laws of the universe... (that is the non-overlapping bit)
no biggy...
but i think you got me wrong, if science could prove spirits, spirits are not part of the religious category (religious maybe is not the right word).

well, yes you have 50% the same information as your siblings. 50% your mother and 50% your father. So your equally related to all those in your immediate family.. Dawkins explains this all quite well in the selfish gene...
I guess the monkey thing is a different measure between genomes. Alot of our DNA is deemed junk (does not seem to do anything) so this may or may not be included in calculations??? i'm guessing here.. |

Posted - 10/21/2007 : 19:14:54 My son takes meds for ADD. There are kids out there that are misdiagnosed or that are undisciplined.
Boys are usually more active than girls, therefore there are more boys diagnosed with it. Girls tend to be more unfocused than hyper. My son is unfocused and he can't sit still. He does not like feeling that way and he is the first one to tell anyone that he needs his medicine in order to focus on what his teachers are saying. Otherwise, he says his mind wanders.
I think he gets it from me.
Seriously, in one of my psychology classes my professor said that researchers are beginning to think that ADD or ADHD is really genes leftover from when those traits that are now considered to be negative were what helped keep humans alive.
I don't know...possible I guess.

Posted - 10/21/2007 : 08:13:06 Some people think its genetic from the father's side.
Some people think its due to a chronically sleep deprived state, like a sleep apnea or directly correlated with tonsils and adenoids.
Some books and doctors say that you can see it in a brain scan. Lack of neurotransmitters and synapse type things.
What worked best for my son is puberty. He's still ADD but the symptoms have lessened since.

He went to a school for kids with focusing issues for a couple of years. There was like 5 girls in the entire school. It definitely is a male thing.
Alot of doctors also think it has to do with exposure to lead and/or other heavy metals.

I've had a kid with ADD for 14 years. The symptoms were obvious pretty much from the getgo. Something is just plain different with this kid. Always has been. At worst, he just seems to be in perpetual confusion. You probably have to explain things a couple times. You might have to just give him thirty more seconds for him to comprehend a situation. He's smart, but it does seem to take longer to comprehend things. And that is exactly why school is so difficult for him. Its taught me alot about patience to say the least.
But I've got to say, when a kid has ADD, a kid has ADD. Overusage of the diagnosis does not mean it does not exist.

From an alternative health perspective they are finding often times if you can eliminate all processed foods that would contain chemicals and colorings and such your kid may normalize. Why is it always male children though?
Uh, oh. One of these says the exposure damage is from during pregnancy with the child. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=chemical+additives+and+Attention+deficit+disorder&btnG=Search
But I have read of people eliminating this stuff from their children's diets and the kids subsequently improving.
