I'm looking at this "Hellsing" series. I have seen a couple clips on Youtube. It looks intense. http://youtube.com/watch?v=vykgCPi-fho
The only Anime I currently have is "Ghost in the Shell" one and two. They are great. http://youtube.com/watch?v=Dn4k3oxoSwo

'Akira' Live Action Remake Finds Director!!!
Sunday, October 28, 2007 Get more Akira news
One of the greatest post-apocalyptic thrillers ever told was the animated Manga Akira, which saw an announcement wayyyy back in July of 2003 that James Robinson would pen the adaptation with director Steven Norrington. I'm sure this has long passed, but we do have something official that just leaked to us through the grapevine, something that's going to blow your socks off. We've been informed that Warner Bros. Pictures is trying to get Akira off the ground pre-strike and have attached 29-year-old Oscar nominated Irish director Ruairi Robinson! No more details have been revealed other than he directed a mind blowing short film entitled The Silent City, which can be viewed over at BDTV. Watch this spot for more news soon and cross your fingers that this sucker gets rolling ASAP. |

Posted - 10/28/2007 : 10:23:12 I picked up an Anime magazine last night because they list the top fifty movies of all time.
I'm looking at an article here that says "Grave Of The Fireflies" is getting a live action update to be released next summer by Japans PAL Entertainment Productions.
Not much else on it though.

So, was the whole story in the movie supposed to be taking place prior to the dropping of the A bombs? I've read the US had fire bombed Japan to hell then after Japan surrendered the US dropped the A bombs anyway to give a message to the world.

Posted - 10/19/2007 : 22:27:27 i'd like to watch the non dubbed version. it was definitely an amazing film, but the girl they cast for the English voice was embarassingly bad |

Posted - 10/19/2007 : 15:10:12 I repeat, sub not dub! I feel like you're not viewing the original, intended version if it's not the original voice track!

maybe my soul is made of cigarette butts and stale India Pale Ale, but i thought the little girls voice in (the dubbed version) of GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES was annoying. it kind of ruined the film for me
I heard the girls voice in english too and it was crap. They just can't match the original voice acting

Posted - 10/19/2007 : 10:19:42 I thought Night Watch was pretty good, not great. It was a bit cheesy in parts.
To be honest, I had completely forgotten to seek out Day Watch. Thanks for the reminder, I'll stick it on my Lovefilm list.

Posted - 10/19/2007 : 07:22:02 Samurai Champloo is excellent anime.
netflix has a season-series of discs, and that's what I've been watching lately.

that's really interesting. I've been watching that as well (broken up over the last few nights, when time allows), and although it's fucking AWESOME, the dialog is a little underwhelming. I thought to myself that it must just be hard to dub english over the original russian (so they had to sometimes paraphrase).
I wish that I had got the version with subtitles now. |

i switch to original too. it's usually hard for me to get into animated stuff but this one at least made me change my view on wartime theft. i like that in movies; getting a new perspective or something.

Posted - 10/18/2007 : 10:55:52 I'm sickened that i haven't been able to go see Day Watch. I have to wait for the dvd in January. Of the two main cinemas, only one was showing it and the times made impossible to make it out there
Anyway, watched Princess Mononoke. T'was awesome

Posted - 10/17/2007 : 16:13:34 Funnily enough I was gonna say...Night Watch's Russian version on the DVD doesn't have proper subtitles, there's just hard of hearing for the English version!

I hate dubbing (on any kind of foreign film, not just Japanese animation!)!

Posted - 10/16/2007 : 16:21:56 I'm off work tomorrow so i'll be getting stuck into Princess Mononoke too. You should think about about Steamboy. Meant to be the most expensive anime ever. It's at least worth a rental
It's based on a comic, except the movie is set at the beginning of the story rather than the end like Akira was

I prefer to watch most foreign films with the subtitles because the dubbing is usually ridiculous. "Run Lola Run" Comes to mind as one of the worst.
I'm going to pick up "Grave of The Fireflies" first I think.
Here's a review I just read.
quote: This film is utterly emotionally draining whilst being rewarding at the same time.
The animation is both realistic and stylized but that's not the point, the main focus of this film is the character development of the brother and sister protagonists. Their relationship is nothing short of beautiful and touching.
And without spoiling anything I have to say that this film touched me in a way no other film has ever touched me in my adult life. One or two films have upset me and reduced me to watery eyes but Grave of the Fireflies had me in fits of sobbing despair. I was a mess! I'm talking total emotional breakdown. Couldn't talk without sobbing! One of the best films I have EVER seen, animated or not.

Posted - 10/14/2007 : 05:01:08 To be honest, I haven't watched it in years.
Vampire Hunter D is good for a darker anime experience. Legend of the Overfiend is one of the most controversial, largely responsible for the negative attitude towards anime in the west for a while. It seems a litte over the top at times, but it has some interesting ideas and themes from what I can remember (within the copious amounts of sex and violence). It's the one anime film that I remember more than any other, the sort of film that will clearly leave a lasting impression on a 15 year old boy. It would do well not to at least slightly disturb you at that age.
I haven't watched anime in so long that it's hard to say what I would think of many of these now.
Perfect Blue and Grave of the Fireflies are also supposed to be good.
I'd walk her everyday, into a shady place

Perfect Blue Grave Of The Fireflies Casshern Studio Ghibli Ninja Scroll Fist of the North Star - This better be good Monkey. I remember how badly I thought Anchorman sucked after rushing to the theatre on your recommendation. Princess Mononoke
