Can anyone recommend some good Anime to get into?
I'm looking at this "Hellsing" series. I have seen a couple clips on Youtube. It looks intense. http://youtube.com/watch?v=vykgCPi-fho
The only Anime I currently have is "Ghost in the Shell" one and two. They are great. http://youtube.com/watch?v=Dn4k3oxoSwo

Akira. Everyone should see it. Steamboy is pretty good too.
If you want something different, watch Casshern (the movie) It's based on a 70's anime series but the live action movie was shot to look like an anime and it manages to pull it off most of the time. It's strange i just mentioned this movie to someone very recently

Are these all the ones with the little kids and robots that talk like little girls and stuff? The stuff on Adult Swim here in the states doesn't excite me that much. I want the really intense stuff.

I would second that recommendation, and also add any Studio Ghibli stuff to the list if that counts as anime. Ninja Scroll is cool too.

I rented "Akira" and wasn't all that thrilled.
Check out "Ghost in the shell 2".
I guess The Matrix was inspired by that mangre, or whatever it is.

Princess Mononoke is very good. And yeah, Cowboy Beebop isn't bad (the series is meant to be much better). If you want dark and creepy, KOK, I would suggest the excellent Perfect Blue, a twisty, Hitchcockian thriller. Not suprized you enjoyed GITS, seeing as it has a lot of political intrigue and issues about free will in it!! But I insist you watch Grave Of The Fireflies, which is set in WWII and based on a true story. It actually made me cry! You're probably not too bothered with the more family-friendly fantasy stuff, but Ghibli have made several classics (Spirited Away was a bit over-hyped, although it is pretty good); I picked up a Ghibli movie called Whisper Of The Heart, and wasn't expecting much-in fact, it turned out to be a smart, beautiful, austere little gem. Oh yeah, Sean, I only watched half of Casshern (which is live-action, folks), it was very well done, but started to go a bit silly! |

I'll admit Casshern isn't the best movie i ever saw and yeah it does get silly, but from what i remember (i've only seen it once, a long time ago) the ending was quite good

I remember my brother bought Akira when I was like six, and that clown guy scared the shit out of me. It's a good movie tho. I used to be into anime a while ago, I liked all those Miyazaki(sp?) ones.
"How do you like that, Sir Harold?

Okay thanks to everyone but so far I'm interested in these I think.
Perfect Blue Grave Of The Fireflies Casshern Studio Ghibli Ninja Scroll Fist of the North Star - This better be good Monkey. I remember how badly I thought Anchorman sucked after rushing to the theatre on your recommendation. Princess Mononoke
No one for the Hellsing stuff, huh?

To be honest, I haven't watched it in years.
Vampire Hunter D is good for a darker anime experience. Legend of the Overfiend is one of the most controversial, largely responsible for the negative attitude towards anime in the west for a while. It seems a litte over the top at times, but it has some interesting ideas and themes from what I can remember (within the copious amounts of sex and violence). It's the one anime film that I remember more than any other, the sort of film that will clearly leave a lasting impression on a 15 year old boy. It would do well not to at least slightly disturb you at that age.
I haven't watched anime in so long that it's hard to say what I would think of many of these now.
Perfect Blue and Grave of the Fireflies are also supposed to be good.
I'd walk her everyday, into a shady place

not to be obvious, but the neon genesis evangelion series is a must-see.
serial experiments: lain was pretty good, too, and rather dark.
gasaraki was great.
howl's moving castle was a mind trip.
and i always wanted to check out gungrave.

I prefer to watch most foreign films with the subtitles because the dubbing is usually ridiculous. "Run Lola Run" Comes to mind as one of the worst.
I'm going to pick up "Grave of The Fireflies" first I think.
Here's a review I just read.
quote: This film is utterly emotionally draining whilst being rewarding at the same time.
The animation is both realistic and stylized but that's not the point, the main focus of this film is the character development of the brother and sister protagonists. Their relationship is nothing short of beautiful and touching.
And without spoiling anything I have to say that this film touched me in a way no other film has ever touched me in my adult life. One or two films have upset me and reduced me to watery eyes but Grave of the Fireflies had me in fits of sobbing despair. I was a mess! I'm talking total emotional breakdown. Couldn't talk without sobbing! One of the best films I have EVER seen, animated or not.

I'm off work tomorrow so i'll be getting stuck into Princess Mononoke too. You should think about about Steamboy. Meant to be the most expensive anime ever. It's at least worth a rental
It's based on a comic, except the movie is set at the beginning of the story rather than the end like Akira was

Roger Ebert's Grave Of The Fireflies review.
I hate dubbing (on any kind of foreign film, not just Japanese animation!)!

Funnily enough I was gonna say...Night Watch's Russian version on the DVD doesn't have proper subtitles, there's just hard of hearing for the English version!

I'm sickened that i haven't been able to go see Day Watch. I have to wait for the dvd in January. Of the two main cinemas, only one was showing it and the times made impossible to make it out there
Anyway, watched Princess Mononoke. T'was awesome

i switch to original too. it's usually hard for me to get into animated stuff but this one at least made me change my view on wartime theft. i like that in movies; getting a new perspective or something.

Samurai Champloo is excellent anime.
netflix has a season-series of discs, and that's what I've been watching lately.

that's really interesting. I've been watching that as well (broken up over the last few nights, when time allows), and although it's fucking AWESOME, the dialog is a little underwhelming. I thought to myself that it must just be hard to dub english over the original russian (so they had to sometimes paraphrase).
I wish that I had got the version with subtitles now. |

I thought Night Watch was pretty good, not great. It was a bit cheesy in parts.
To be honest, I had completely forgotten to seek out Day Watch. Thanks for the reminder, I'll stick it on my Lovefilm list.

I repeat, sub not dub! I feel like you're not viewing the original, intended version if it's not the original voice track!
