This is very difficult to get away from these days. There are many products that contain MSG but use different names to disguise the fact.

Hidden Names for MSG

Foods always contain MSG when these words are on the label:

MSG Gelatin Calcium Caseinate
Monosodium glutamate Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein (HVP) Textured Protein
Monopotassium glutamate Hydrolyzed Plant Protein (HPP) Yeast Extract
Glutamate Autolyzed Plant Protein Yeast food or nutrient
Glutamic Acid Sodium Caseinate Autolyzed Yeast

Foods made with the following products often contain MSG.

Malted Barley (flavor) Flavors, Flavoring Modified food starch
Barley malt Reaction Flavors Rice syrup or brown rice syrup
Malt Extract or Flavoring Natural Chicken, Beef, or Pork, Flavoring "Seasonings" (Most assume this means salt, pepper, or spices and herbs, which sometimes it is.) Lipolyzed butter fat
Maltodextrin Soy Sauce or Extract "Low" or "No Fat" items
Caramel Flavoring (coloring) Soy Protein Corn syrup and corn syrup solids (some companies use another process to make their product, saying it is MSG free)
Stock Soy Protein Isolate or Concentrate Citric Acid (when processed from corn)
Broth Cornstarch Milk Powder
Bouillon Flowing Agents Dry Milk Solids
Carrageenan Wheat, rice, or oat protein Protein Fortified Milk
Whey Protein or Whey Anything enriched or vitamin enriched Annatto
Whey Protein Isolate or Concentrate Protein fortified "anything" Spice
Pectin Enzyme modified "anythng" Gums

Dan, I like a lot carpaccio, with olive oil and parmesan cheese.

On the other hand, have you tried ceviche? itīs a traditional dish from Chile and Peru, itīs raw fish with lemon juice, chopped onion, chili, salt and peppers, itīs excellent, for me a lot better than sashimis.

Salu2

You are spot on, this fine food needs to be spread.

Iīll start a thread with ceviche recipes

But KOK's getting paid for this one. In sushi. (Trying to stay on-topic.)

Please pardon me, for these my wrongs.

In my experience, any of these "natural foods" stores like Trader Joe's (see darwin's mayo, above) will have them. Kathryn's answer was better.

Any natural foods store or Japanese food store. There's gotta be a buncha places in SLO that sell them. You will love them!

Where do I - an average American male - get these "Wasabi peas" of which you speak?

kathryn Posted - 09/24/2007 : 14:34:26
Wasabi peas are crack-like addictive. I can only imagine how good wasabi mayo is. Gotta locate some. Thanks for the tip, darwin.

I don't eat much sushi, but I am addicted to this stuff. Great on burgers.

Simon, is that you again? Doesn't sound like it from the tre-esque "mmmm."

Too bad Kat, for a good ceviche the fish must be fresh and I keep rest the fish into lemon juice at least 45 min before eat.

i wish i did. i don't know how to make sushi. a friend of a friend knows how.

i'm sure you could find some tempura recipes online though.. let me know how it turns out
danjersey Posted - 09/22/2007 : 18:57:45
I enjoy eating raw fish, it feels right.
I like tuna sashimi and spicey salmon rolls with avacado.
Have you had beef carpachio?
Same as sushi.
Cut real thin so as to mirror the tounge.
I'm afraid though that sushi is losing it's touch here in America,I have it somedays for lunch in a cafeteria!
This now readily available delicacy from the sea is sitting alongside mashed potatoes and gravy.
Thats not a complaint by the way, just a distraction.

In that case, the culinary tour will be reduced to a packet of Reeses Pieces. And floop only gets two pieces.

Anyone for knob Marmite?

Thanks Kat. I'm going to organize a live telethon to raise some funds myself. If there's any money left over, I'll see if I can stuff Sean in the cargo hold of a Ryanair flight.

floop, i'm jealous. i'm also worried about carl. first, he's never had real ramen, then he's never had sushi. i propose a "forum let's fly carl to LA funddrive" to raise enough money to get him to you so you can drive him around various LA taco stands, sushi joints and assorted eateries, plus make him your famous quesadillas. it's a mission of mercy and a culinary necessity, no? i will be donating Canadian dollars, which are better than your anemic US dollars.
