Posted - 05/29/2007 : 15:26:32 A show of hands, please ... who'd be up for some sort of forum reading group? We could read, say, a book a month and then discuss it the last week of the month or whatever. I'm digging the "What are you reading?" thread, but can't help but think how much richer the discussion could be if several people read the same book at the same time.
Could lead to some great fights, too.

I requested it at the library, but started out at about #650 on the waiting list, and I haven't moved up much in a couple weeks, so I'm just going to buy it at Barnes & Noble. We'll start discussing the book in about three weeks. I know kfs and awestruck are on board. Or at least they were at one point. And Kathryn is definitely not reading this one. This much is for sure. So who's in?

I have my copy and I'm reading right now!

it means don't marry/sleep with your father's wife. did you read the verse before that? "if a man rapes a virgin and they are discovered the man shall pay the young woman's father 50 shekels of silver and must marry her because he has humbled her; he shall not be permitted to divorce her all his days." - discuss.
to clarify: floop's mom and lbf's mom are still up for grabs except by floop and lbf respectively.

Posted - 06/01/2007 : 15:31:48 Gideons give out the New Testament in schools and hospitals, the whole Bible in hotels. They're not exactly loaded, but are funded entirely by subscriptions of the people that give them out, so they're happy for you to take them. They go around restocking once a year or so.
I know a guy who does it. He's a dude.

Good plan. But we'll get there when we get there. In August. Should be some damn fine summer reading -- well, if you're in the Northern Hemisphere.

Genesis should be a good 'un - I'm sure it is pretty steady stuff. Jonah should be good, as long as there are lots of whales. Lamentations sounds a bit depressing though. For some reason Samuel gets two books so presumably he is a popular dude with God?
I'm also going to need some help. In Deuteronomy for example can someone clarify 22.30 'A man shall not take his father's wife, nor discover his father's skirt'. We're not going to be debating cross dressing surely?

It's generally deemed OK to skip the "begats". That should knock out about 300 pages.
Also, if you don't have a bible (or only 3 or 4), you can get one from any hotel. Those Gideons are rich dudes, they'll replace it for you.
But seriously, it's not considered stealing to take a Gideons bible, as long as you are doing it for honorable purposes. They want you to take it if it will help you find your way in life. Look it up!

The Gideons are nice, but they only hand out the New Testament. and the psalms. and my bible has 1454 pages in the Old Testament. it depends on the print. and your right about they want you to take it. i have about 5 of those too. they hand them out on my college campus sometimes.

Posted - 06/01/2007 : 11:30:12 No, but isn't it fitting that it has Frank in the title.
Here's what one reader had to say;
"It just keeps zooming down at you, a perpetual cycle of hate, hate, frank, horrific dreams packaged with the knowledge that you can attain them, the state of being such a FRANK, a being self-condemned to hovering within and controlling all that is disreputable and eternal, violent and intellectual, such a Frank that enacts each twinge of his brain with such clarity and skillful desire to bring about horror and sickness that each seemingly unlikely turn of events gradually and subversively brings the world from happy day-glo mental static/stasis into the plaything of frank's own desire.. Put it on the same bookshelf as "Time's Arrow," by Martin Amis, and "Chants de Maldoror," by Isidore Ducasse. George Mangels is my hero! And the only other author i've read who's discovered the terror of Frank. Plus, if that's not enough for you, it's a really swell-looking book, and I think everyone should own one."
