A show of hands, please ... who'd be up for some sort of forum reading group? We could read, say, a book a month and then discuss it the last week of the month or whatever. I'm digging the "What are you reading?" thread, but can't help but think how much richer the discussion could be if several people read the same book at the same time.

Could lead to some great fights, too.

Cohen

Sure, if that's what it is. Haven't seen one in the year+ I've been here. The old ones must be dead. And I don't mind doing the lifting to make a new one work.

floop have you been reading the creation museum thread. i think possibly we need to stay away from the bible. that would really be a heated discussion, judging the reaction from other forum members on that thread.

Actually the best thread, in my opinion, was a religion thread. I learned more in that thread from Simon and Brian and Tre than I did getting a degree in religion, I kid you not.

Old Testament it is.

Actually, it doesn't. And that's all I remember. It was some cleverly named thread started by Tre. You know how clever them scientists can be. Smart and stuff. By the way, in searching for the above visual, I found this, which I now dedicate to you, darwin, with apologies to coastline for totally fucking up his thread:

Thank you kathryn, Between this and the Creation Museum thread I didn't think it could get any whackier. But for Jesus' sake let's start with an easy one like Doolittle 33 1/3 by Ben Sisario. I'm voting no on the Old Testament.

This has been one hell of a thread hijacking. It'll be a rowdy reading group if I ever get it off the ground. The Bible's sounding more fun by the minute.

But seriously, I'm thinking Khaled Hosseini's new book, "A Thousand Splendid Sons." (He's the guy who wrote the excellent "The Kite Runner.") I'm going to buy it in the next month, and start reading it July 1. Discussion will begin the last week of July. It'll be in this thread -- no matter what happens in this thread between now and then. I hope at least awestruck will join me. You still in?

I sure like the Laura Bush pic, Kathryn. At first I didn't recognize her. I thought it might be you, Carolynanna, Tre, or PixieSteve.

Please pardon me, for these my wrongs.

Jesus Christ (pun intended).

This brings back nightmares of the class I worked the hardest in my life and learned the most about religion in. Actually I learned the most about any subject in my life and also what it is like to have a father who is always disappointed in you no matter how hard you try.

The class was called "Death" and taught by Hans O. Tiefel at the College Of William and Mary.

I got a C. Which is good if you even survive the class. The dropout rate is about 30%, and only one person gets an A. A "C" for working your ass off and learning the most you've ever learned. Ouch. But an experience I'll never forget.

He will haunt me to my grave. As I'm sure he intended ;)

"If the bone of a peacock or of a hyena be covered with gold, and tied on the right hand, it makes a man lovely in the eyes of other people.

In the same way, if a bead, made of the seed of the jujube, or of the conch shell, be enchanted by the incantations mentioned in the Atharvana Veda, or by the incantations of those well skilled in the science of magic, and tied on the hand, it produces the same result as described above.

When a female attendant arrives at the age of puberty, her master should keep her secluded, and when men ardently desire her on account of her seclusion, and on account of the difficulty of approaching her, he should then bestow her hand on such a person as may endow her with wealth and happiness."

enough of this Old Testament shit, let's read the Kama Sutra.

I think everyone interested in participating should nominate one title so we'll have a small list of books (5 or so, 10?). Then, Coastline (because it's his group) gets to pick the next book we'll read by a certain date. Then we discuss.

Even though I just finished reading it, I think "The Road" by Cormac McCarthy would be a good option. I'd really love to discuss this book a little more. I'd love to hear what others around here have to say about it!
