How many damned iPods does Apple expect me to buy over the course of my lifetime? Argh. I bought one four years ago, and it died after two years. So I bought another one. And now this one has died, two years after I bought it. I could go spend another $350 or whatever and get another, but is it just going to die in two years? I've loved my iPods, and I'm a complete Apple nut, but this is insane.

Thanks for letting me rant.

Please pardon me, for these my wrongs.

Look who's back!

I bought an iPod about 16 months ago and no problems. But, I only use it about 5 times a year on airplane trips.

It seems like people who get iPods always have problems with them within the first week or so, and then they break after a year. And yet so many of them remain loyal to Apple. It's a cult, I'm telling you.

Isn't the biggest touch one just 16GB though? If my iPod was to suddenly break right now I know I'd go for an iPod classic. I'm not really excited by the iPod touch, I just listen to music so none of the other stuff is important to me.

The new iPods are sweet. Hard to choose between the iPod classic, with its 160GB of storage, or the iPod touch, which is like an iPhone without the phone (music, movies, web browser, AND a mini version of the iTunes Store, which you access via Wi-Fi). I don't care what I've said before -- I'm giving Apple more of my money, and soon.

Please pardon me, for these my wrongs.

I wouldn't advise it. When I sent mine in it just came back with a short note saying it met their requirements. Yeah, like a maximum 2 hour battery life meets their requirements! Apple are arrogant.

What sucks is I lost not just my entire FB collection but eight years' worth of family photos. All that stuff was on both my iPod and my iMac at one point, but, well, they're both dead now and I'm an idiot for never backing up my files.

Apple's got me by the balls, I swear. In addition to my iPod dying earlier this year, and my believing I need to spend another $350 on another one, now my iMac has run out of gas. It's four years old, and I think I simply wore it out. I took it to the Apple Store, and the Genius ran some diagnostic tests on it, and it's dead. But they tell me if I buy a new Apple, they'll try -- for free -- to extract the data from the hard drive and move it to the new one. Well, I ain't got an extra grand lying around, for crissakes. Apples cost so much. But I have no intention of buying some bloody Vista-based machine, either. I swear, I'm just going to take my books and read for a few years and give up on electronics. All they do is break down in the end.

Please pardon me, for these my wrongs.

has anyone had a chance to try one of these yet? storage isn't the greatest, the size seems ok for outside stuff like running and cycling, but i'm also interested in any sonic comparison to an ipod.

That may be good for the sound quality, but is really, really bad for the battery. And since that is not the iPod's strong feature, I would always prefer a compressed format.

I know some people are very picky about fidelity, and I can't argue anyone out of thinking they can tell the difference, but there have been many blind tests involving legendary recording and mastering engineers, and they were wrong more than half the time...

I started with all my stuff in WAV, but after deciding I couldn't tell the difference, I down converted everything and save 1/5th the drive space and went with 192/48k mp3s.

I can understand the audio argument regarding listening on the hoof or in the car - probably no need to worry about mp3 v WAV in those circumstances. I won't be using it in these environments though.

I'm now spoilt as I saved up and bought an expensive hi fi set up a couple of years ago (north of £2,000). It was a revelation when I hooked it all up for the first time. Listening on most other sources is now a disappointment.

The ipod/JBL set up is pretty decent using WAV files. Haven't actually tried a compressed file but will do soon out of curiosity. Not bothered about disk space as I've bought the 80gb version - room for 2,000 songs which is enough for me.

Anyway, I want album art for my Dickies albums!!!

I thought that until I actually got an Ipod. I find itunes very easy to use. Maybe the older versions were more of a pain, but the latest version is good.

The only thing I've found a bit odd is iTunes missing album art. For example no art for 'Never mind the bollocks..' and a couple of Stereolab albums so far. I can't seem to acquire art from elsewhere because my files are uncompressed.

If it's not in the iTunes music store, the art won't show up. If you want everything to have art, just go to amazon.com and find the album. Highlight all the album tracks in iTunes and right click and pick Info. you can then just drag and drop the artwork into the box and hit OK, et viola.

Might take an hour or so, but it's pretty easy to find the ones that are missing.

Thanks for the advice but still can't get it to work due to the fact that 99% of my audio files are in WAV format. I'm ok with the few mp3 tracks that I have but WAV tracks are a no go area although i can get art onto WAV tracks if iTunes happens to be selling the album.

Quirky glitch or is there a higher meanign behind this?

I second creative. I have a really old 20gb zen touch, battered around like hell but still works fine! I also have some nice Grado SR60's to accompany them, great sound.

The software and documentation and DRMish stuff for any of the Sony music players is some of the worst I've ever seen in the history of software and documentation. I'm not joking.

The hardware is not the problem, it's getting it to actually do what you want it to do.

I had such infuriating experiences with Sony music products that I now go out of my way not to buy anything at all from them if possible.

I've had very crappy experiences with Creative int he past as well.

To sum up, with what I've wasted on Sony and Creative crap, I could've bought 3 or 4 iPods or other Apple products that at least worked and didn't just sit on a shelf somewhere gathering dust and pissing me off.

I think the most common complaints have been related to the SonicStage software more than the players themselves. I had problems with it to start with but it seems fine now.

Mine's only a basic mp3 player but for 70 quid I'm more than impressed with it.

Is it dieing cause it's broken, or the battery? You know you can replace the battery for a lot cheaper than buying a new one.

On the other hand, how long have you ever really kept a personal music player? Something new and better always comes out every couple years.

Just trying to understand your complaint.

the cool thing for me is I got the Monster iCruze installed in my car, which was ridiculously expensive. But the cool thing is my 2nd generation iPod can live on forever in my glovebox.

I got a nano, and it's awesome for working out/running/biking. A must-have! It just hangs around your neck and you can't even feel it.

== jeffamerica ==

Since my iPod "died" a couple months ago, I've been able to revive it and get a little more life out of it. Then I thought it died again, and yet I've managed to milk it for some more life. The problem is the hard drive, not the battery, though the battery is coming into play now. I've dropped it several times in its two-year life, and that has led to it being corrupted at times. Several times, I've had to restore it via iTunes and then reload all my music. I hate waiting for that process to finish (it takes a couple hours). Anyway, the hard-drive issues lead to more than usual battery usage, so that's a problem. Luckily, I've had a nano as a backup all this time, and that's come in very handy. I've come to realize I listen to the same two or three albums over and over most of the time, so a nano pretty much does the trick for me. I prefer having my entire music collection at my fingertips -- especially when I'm talking music with a friend and want to demonstrate what I'm talking about -- but the nano is fine if that's all I have working.

I can't believe somebody (speedymariegonzales) has been using the same player for seven years. It must have tiny memory, since the older ones didn't have much. Makes me wonder if I need to buy a Creative player.

Please pardon me, for these my wrongs.

Just bought an 80gb ipod - first one ever for me.

I've hooked it up with a JBL Radial speaker system as a kitchen 'micro' system. Bit picky when it comes to audio quality (main house stereo required a mortgage to purchase) so quite pleased with the overall sound. The JBL speaker looks like a funky minature Stargate:-

After reading some of the comments above hoping my ipod lasts the distance. Unlikely to travel with it so it may lead a protected life.

Totally new to the ipod world I'm ashamed to say. Love the shuffle song feature. Interesting when you get a Dead Kennedy's - Divine Comedy - Slayer - Dean Martin combo!

My iPod is new enough that the battery life hasn't been an issue yet. The thing that bothers me about listening to music on the iPod is that iTunes really seems to change the mix. Backing vocal tracks are suddenly was too high in the mix. Guitar tracks that were mixed into the background are suddenly just as loud as the main guitar track. On first listen, this is actually kinda cool, it's like you get to see behind the scenes to what the tracks sounded like before they were mixed. But after awhile I tend to miss the version of the mix that was the artist's intent. Also annoying: when using shuffle it really brings out the vast difference in mastering. One song is loud, the next song is quiet. The mastering engineers of this world need to all get together and decide how loud a CD should be. Jeez!
