Posted - 02/15/2007 : 07:54:16 This topic might cause some angry reactions, but it's not meant to. I like this forum. I wouldn't be here if I didn't.
But, knowing that FRANK reads it, do you ever feel embarassed by some things here? Like in the latest "I just don't get Frank's music anymore" thread, I found myself cringing when I saw Frank post in it. There's nothing wrong with the issue of the thread (even if it is a repeat of many, many old threads) and there's nothing wrong with not liking a song or debating about a song. But when Frank responds in those threads, I get the feeling he walks away thinking "What a bunch of dorks!"
Ya'll ever see the Woody Allen movie, Stardust Memories? He plays a filmmaker at a festival of his past films. There he encounters all manner of freakish fans: people making weird demands of him, people taking his work more seriously than he does, people desperate for his attention -- and these fans (all of them) are portrayed as idiotic, sad, disturbed gargoyles.
I guess I'm afraid of coming off like THAT.
But maybe we don't. Maybe Frank doesn't think we're a buncha dorks.
What do you think? Relate? Don't relate? |

Posted - 02/16/2007 : 17:28:46 Here's how that works: You suggest that Frank Black/Black Francis change his forum handle to something reflecting his new name. Then he actually does it. (What the?) And then you tell your wife about it, as giddy as a child. And then your wife rolls her eyes and professes you to be the biggest idiot on the face of the planet.
I'm never embarrassed by what I post until I tell my wife about the board's current discussions and then realize what dorks we really are. But hey, we could be on the Britney Spears board ...
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs. |

Posted - 02/16/2007 : 15:55:51 Frank loves us - that's why he gave us Christmass - we ARE the uberfans
Mostly I just read but it seems that a glass or two of red wine always puts me in a responding mood. Then when I read them later I sometimes think "geez" - but the board has to have contributors to stay alive
but I think it's extra cool that Frank peruses and sometimes comments on these boards. if he were to comment on one of my comments - like he did yours Daisygirl - I'd be floating for about a month - high fives all the way around

Posted - 02/16/2007 : 14:13:07 I think it gets weird around here when it's about the man, rather than the art. But then, who among us doesn't find the man just as interesting as his music?
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs. |

Posted - 02/16/2007 : 14:02:32 I've definitely posted a lot of things I felt kind of foolish about, but nothing specific. I wouldn't just be uncomfortable with FB reading some things, but other forum members too, of course.
I sometines think Frank may look at some of the speculation and jokey things about him and go "Ah, fuck off!" I mean, he's not public property. Personally speaking, I never mean to be disrespectful, it's all about Frank Black 'The Artist' and not aimed at Mr. Charles Thompson! |

Me too. Given we're talking a thousand fanatics, and, more realistically a hundred that are cognizant, Frank can consider himself relatively understood, as the genii go these days. It's lonely in the desert. As for myself, I'll be content to be but green growth with roots.

Posted - 02/15/2007 : 18:55:27 i really think frank enjoys this site and interacting with the fans. it's a great way to share what he's doing musically and get a pulse of what is going on. but i think it would be kind of freaky at times having a bunch of uberfans fully disecting your work and commenting on everything you are doing. doesn't leave much for privacy. but he does a great job of handling it and is usually pretty laid back and humorous about some of these threads/posts. i know that he wound down his blog at the mog site partly cause he had a link to his email and he said he was getting some pretty weird emails from fans.

Seriously- I like the freedom of speech here and I would put that value over the few a holes that really in my humble opinion cross the line. |

Posted - 02/15/2007 : 10:11:56 If I had a forum devoted to me I'd definitely read it. I would also not get wound up over little things, everybody has their different take on things. I'm glad FB posts here. The cryptic posts the other week were entertaining to read and try to decipher.
I don't consider myself a stalker. Maybe idiotic, sad, didturbed and a bit of a nerd but not a stalker. I've never engaged in dialogue with him either. He writes the music and I listen to it. That's a decent enough releationship for me.

Posted - 02/15/2007 : 09:14:17 I guess some people can get a bit stalker-ish, but I have never engaged in dialogue with him personally. I just leave him be.
As for discussing his music, nowt wrong with that. Everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Posted - 02/15/2007 : 08:18:44 Many of the people on this forum are what Frank has referred to as the "uber-fans." Sure, there's some inane discussion at times, but there's no doubt he sees some value in the discussion of the music. There was a thread last summer where he defended himself after some inaccurate comments about his snubbing a fan after a show, and in that thread, he expressed that he's curious to know what people think about the music. Here's what he had to say:

..and if ever again attempt to correct, explain or get defensive about something posted here on the blog, especially to a specific forum member, let me apologize in advance; i would never want to make someone feel awkward because i showed up on the blog and commented. let me say it's a bit surreal being on tour and having your every movement observed analyzed, interpreted and misinterpreted, and then posted here for all to see. i should just stay away i suppose. but i can't help it. i'm curious about what people are saying, especially when it's about the music. peace and love to all, including those i may have offended. well, i'm off to finish laundry and hopefully make it down to see reid's set tonight. ciao.
Oh, and here's a link to that thread, which was very interesting: http://forum.frankblack.net/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=16860
