David Beckham is going to make $50 million a year to play soccer (rather than football). Is that the most ridiculous salary in the whole entire history of the whole entire universe?
Ok, I admit it, I'm taking my family to the game when his team comes to Denver. Still, $50 million a year? That's sick.

He mentioned recently that he went to In-N-Out burger and ate inside. He must be loving not being recognized!

Posted - 07/15/2007 : 21:14:25 Actually the most ridiculous salary in the history of the universe is Barry Zito at 7 years/127million, IMO. The dimensions of the ballpark combined with the infield defense of Oakland make their pitchers look far better than they really are. What a bunch of dipshits (the teams bidding to overpay Zito).
Anyhow, for the record, Real Madrid won the league (just mentioning this as he actually did win a trophy), and Beckham's salary for playing soccer for the Galaxy is only $5.5 million/year, which is nothing. The big money comes from endorsements, merchandising and a percentage of team profits (which is up to him to earn). I think it was reported that his salary was 5 years/250 million which was later quietly reported to be an estimate that was inflated by his agents at AEG for the headlines.
In comparison, I believe his salary at Real Madrid was something like $28 million/year.
BTW, would you be able to to pick Michael Shumacher out of a crowd? He makes $40 million a year. In salary, not endorsements. He's estimated to be the world's highest paid athlete besides maybe Tiger Woods, and I bet most Americans have never watched an F1 race outside the indy 500 they turned on in the background while they grilled cheeseburgers and drank beer.

Anyway, $200,000 a year for him is "the most ridiculous salary in the whole entire history of the whole entire universe", not Beckham's.

T'is true. I could (and did) turn my head and blow rasberries at the opposition when they were doing well. My father spent most of the match with a pint of magners in each hand grinning from ear to ear occasionally uttering "shite atmosphere isn't it".

Stallone Takes to Liverpool Soccer Field Sunday January 14 3:02 PM ET
As L.A. prepares to welcome David Beckham, Sylvester Stallone took to the Liverpool soccer field on Sunday.
At the start of Everton Football Club's Premiership match against Reading, the "Rocky" star held up a blue-and-white Everton scarf to loud cheers from the 30,000-strong crowd.
Stallone, 60, was not the only American on the field. Both teams were fielding American goalkeepers Tim Howard for Everton and Marcus Hahnemann for Reading.
The actor is due in London later in the week for the British premiere of "Rocky Balboa," his sixth film about the blue-collar Philadelphia boxer.
Soccer's profile in the United States got a boost this week when former England captain Beckham announced he was leaving Real Madrid for the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer.
Beckham's wife Victoria the former Posh Spice of the Spice Girls was greeted by a scrum of paparazzi when she arrived in L.A. on Saturday.
Stallone said he was excited about the sport's future in the U.S.
"I think it will be fantastic when David Beckham goes to the States. ... This could be great for everybody," he said. "Beckham could be a big hit in the States."

There is a 'neutral' section of the away stand at Fulham which sometimes has both home and away supporters in. I think it's been working well so far.

Haha, that made me chuckle.
Thing is though, watching it and playing it are two very different things. Also watching it in this country, and watching it in Australia are also two very different things. I went to a live game there, and it puts our game to shame.
But your right, the atmosphere is more friendly at the rugby.

I went to a rugby match over Christmas and it was the most fun. I've been to a couple of football matches (West Bromwich Albion were my local team when I lived in Birmingham) and the atmosphere was always a little bit ick. There was a bit of nasty tension even then.
Rugby however, everyone was so friendly. I was watching Worcester Warriors Vs. London Irish and on the bus on the way in a couple who were London Irish fans got on to the all Worcester bus. Everyone was chatty with them and nice. I was a bit meh about the match to start with but (excuse my lack of technical terminology) there was one point where it was two solid opposing walls of men each trying to get the ball in opposite directions so they were shoving at each other. The crowd started yelling "Heave" and I couldn't help but pipe up with a "Heave Damn You". Then afterwards there was an Irish band in the bar and dancing and everyone having a laugh. When the London Irish fans left in their big coach there was singing and good natured international hand signals for tosser and that was as mean as it got. And that wasn't mean at all.
I was well dubious about Rugby but they really go for it, and they're seriously gentlemanly as well. I'm going to go watch it again some time.
I also liked when they hoisted players up.
Heh, just remembered. Ended up in a minibus full of drunk rugby fans on the way home. I was stone cold sober so had no excuse for joining in the rugby chants...
I know I love, his bust up nose, his mangled teeth, his broken jaw, his curly top....

But dives in soccer are. And they're the reason the sport won't catch on here.
The reason soccer won't catch on in the US is because a match doesn't have the kind of rhythm that allows a bunch of TV ads to run. No ads = no revenue = no promotion = no interest.
That said Beckham will catch on and I wish I were the brilliant backroom strategist who thought up this buzz-generating idea. Put another way, tonight the happiest people in the world are Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt who will be replaced as media feeding frenzy fodder with Posh and Becks. Soooo glad I left Southern California....

Posted - 01/12/2007 : 16:30:07 But dives in soccer are. And they're the reason the sport won't catch on here. Seriously. I watched a lot of World Cup games last year, and really enjoyed them, but I was thoroughly disgusted by the dives. It's not that it's bad acting, it's the idea that these guys are such wusses that it doesn't take much to fell them. That's why I liked that Rooney dude. None of the rest of them have any shame. In American football, guys get smashed on every play, but there's no way they're gonna shame their mommas and their selves by falling down cuz another player tapped him on the arm. If Zidane were to headbutt an American football player, the player would do one of two things: 1) laugh, because they're wearing pads and it wouldn't hurt; or 2) kick the shit out of him.
