David Beckham is going to make $50 million a year to play soccer (rather than football). Is that the most ridiculous salary in the whole entire history of the whole entire universe?
Ok, I admit it, I'm taking my family to the game when his team comes to Denver. Still, $50 million a year? That's sick.
And aren't you havin' fun? |

Plus it's a 5 year contract, so if he sees his contract out he'll have earned a quarter of a billion in 5 years.

Welcome to the U.S. Mr. Beckham. It's about time they got somebody worth a damn to come play in this league.

Yes, as it fits in with my desire to keep a low profile....
Anyhooo, thats tip money for Becks. 10 years ago this signing might have made a real impact, now it's just a novelty...

Don't trust the papers, in the last 4 years in Real Madrid he has done nothing worthy of mention.

True, but you can't put a price on the opportunity to piss all over Rangers.
Actually, I quite like David Beckham. I'm fairly sure he wouldn't have done this if he had any chance of making the national team again. Going anywhere from Real is a step down, so it's fairly reasonable to take a challenge of a different nature. He's not going to achieve any more in European football, so why not?

4 years at Madrid and no trophy to show for it. In the next world, always choose Barcelona.

Actually, that's pretty amazing, you'd have thought going to Real would guarantee a trophy. Hell, even Steve McManaman won a trophy or two with them.

By jove, you're right. How funny.
I can understand the lure of Madrid, but the timing from Becks was a little off. Real were slowly on the decline with their ageing "Galaticos". Man U wanted him to go to Barca. |

I guess 50 million a year and to live in Hollywood are irrestible offers, he should fit right in there, surely we'll see him at some Laker games shorty. You could bring the entire European league over here and still no one in the US is going to watch. He's delusional if he thinks he can change that, and so are the poeple paying him all that money. Fake wrestling is 100xs more popular here, seriously. Oh, and Nascar, I believe is the most popular. Good luck with that soccer game. I like the sport, but MLS games are totally lame, the soccer is even lame, I'd be just as happy watching a college game. I guess I'm being negative, so good luck dude. How about as a show of gratitude we'll send Terrell Owens over to spice up NFL Europe. For free even.
this, that, and fuck-shit. |

I saw a story saying Brad Pitt wants Beckham to give his kid a soccer lesson. Welcome to Hollywood. He'll do just fine.
I actually think the MLS is doing alright. I've watched a few games. |

But dives in soccer are. And they're the reason the sport won't catch on here. Seriously. I watched a lot of World Cup games last year, and really enjoyed them, but I was thoroughly disgusted by the dives. It's not that it's bad acting, it's the idea that these guys are such wusses that it doesn't take much to fell them. That's why I liked that Rooney dude. None of the rest of them have any shame. In American football, guys get smashed on every play, but there's no way they're gonna shame their mommas and their selves by falling down cuz another player tapped him on the arm. If Zidane were to headbutt an American football player, the player would do one of two things: 1) laugh, because they're wearing pads and it wouldn't hurt; or 2) kick the shit out of him.
We like our athletes to be manly in this country, golf notwithstanding. And don't think baseball players aren't tough. You stand in there and take a 100-mph fastball in the ribs without crying.

The reason soccer won't catch on in the US is because a match doesn't have the kind of rhythm that allows a bunch of TV ads to run. No ads = no revenue = no promotion = no interest.
That said Beckham will catch on and I wish I were the brilliant backroom strategist who thought up this buzz-generating idea. Put another way, tonight the happiest people in the world are Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt who will be replaced as media feeding frenzy fodder with Posh and Becks. Soooo glad I left Southern California....

Off topic: after getting use to watching sports recorded on my Tivo and skipping all of the commercials, watching a game live is becoming annoying. I went to college basketball game a week go and couldn't stand all of timeouts I had to sit through.
Pro Football (I've never gone to pro game unless you count the LONG!! defunct World Football League) is suppose to be terrible in that regard. |

Maybe if they force it down our throats long enough, it'll be as popular as the WNBA.
Nah, that'll never happen.

I was gonna say pro wrestling or WWE but I didn't know if you would know what I was talking about. The more I think about this the more ridiculously stupid I find it, not that he comes here to play soccer, but a 250 million dollar deal? The entire MLS isn't worth that much.
this, that, and fuck-shit. |

His salary won't be paid by just MLS money. It will includes endorsements. Coke has that kind of money. Gillette has that kind of money. (Does Beckham shave much?) Maybe he'll pimp for Viagra or Cialis, too.

Yeah, I knew what you meant, I'm actually a big fan of WWE. I do know it's scripted and match results are predetermined but there's just something about it that I love. It's entertaining as hell!

I heard on the radio that Adidas is likely paying about half of it. Can't wait until this shit is out of the news. This motherfucker is usurping valuable pigskin airtime. A few good games this weekend should clean him from my dial. |

Leo Sayer should move to The States. But then he'd probably strop off back to Oz after a 'pants-means-trousers-not-'underpants' type mishap.
Sorry, the return of Vovat is generating strange, disruptive energies. |
