Are there any products you refuse to buy, stores you refuse to shop at, restaurants you refuse to go to (etc....) for reasons that have NOTHING whatsoever to do with price/service/selection/quality? I'm talking about ethical and/or political reasons.

I can't think of anything I actively boycott (I have strong preferences, but politics or ethics never enter into it... as far as i know, at least), but I think it's an interesting subject.

So what about you?

that´s one of Donald Rumsfeld´s gifts to the world. He was chairman of Searle when the guys who developed it told him it needed to be tested more, too dangerous etc. so he fired them and replaced them with folk who´d say yes.

I more or less boycott tv...although I admit there are a few good shows, in general I can't stand it. My parents never had tv reception at their place and I thought when I moved out I'd think differently, but now I'm just glad they kept me away from all that junk (I most defiantly won't pay for it at mine)

Those coupons will probably end up in another burger.

Haha, Homers, only spotted that typo now! By the way, my favorite board game is Chesse.

I understand, IceCream. Everybody I hang with is outspokenly anti-Bush, but I haven't boycotted any friendships, though a few of them no longer speak to me, mostly for my vehemence against the Clintons. I have no problem with the opinions of the guy/gal on the street/web. But celebrities have the soapbox and the responsibilities that go with that. Being a gifted, or not, artist confers no authority on matters political, but it does misbegottenly confer influence with those lacking ideas of their own, who unfortunately make up most of the voting herd. I do my small part to diminish that influence, and, more relevantly, I can’t experience their art apart from their politics. I can’t see Martin Sheen and Susan Sarandon the actors, or Chrissie Hynde and Michael Stipe the rockers, without also seeing the soapboxers as well. My loss. As I mentioned, I often overlook it, as with Moby, in his case because I really can’t take his philosophy of life seriously but can still enjoy some of his albums. It’s like, we know Bobby Fischer is deranged, but would that put us off his chess game? But some of these other folks have credibility with the masses and that creates potential for abuse. I boycott those with mass appeal that I feel should know better.

I try to boycott movies, TV, and music that involve celebrities who have spoken out harshly against Bush and/or the USA, or have advocated social causes I don’t endorse. In most cases I’m an absolutist about that, not due to any particular discipline on my part so much as out of visceral revulsion. However, I do make exceptions for certain actors and rock musicians. For example, if Frank were to go political I can’t see myself rejecting him or his music. Same for Kim Deal, Tanya Donelly, Kristin Hersh, Liz Phair, and Sam Phillips. I also boycott products and corporations that I think are guilty of using their profits for political ends I don’t endorse. Google comes to mind, with the additional reason that I don’t trust their results for politically-charged searches.

The funny thing is that some people on this forum have spoken out harshly against Bush and/or the USA. Do you boycott reading their posts, Erebus?

(NOTE: the above question was intended to be light-hearted.)

Who can top three paragraphs about hardware stores?

I just remember National Lumber's catchy little theme song and their logo with the pilgrim holding the sign. Took many a trip there with pops when I was just a rug rat and he was framing houses.

We still got Ganahl Lumber down here which is a bit of a throw back hardware joint. The owner is cool, knows his shit and only uses the store front marquee for oddball anecdotes like,"He who dies with the most toys is still dead."

The funny thing about that is, movie trailers ARE commercials. That's what amazes me about MTV. It's 24 hours of commercials, yet it is insanely popular.

Man I barely remember National Lumber. What about HomeClub/HomeBase, Builder's Emporium (a Wickes company!) and all the True Values and Aces? RIP the golden age of hardware stores.

I used to be able to go into Baker's Hardware in Glendale and get any kind of fastener or washer I needed from the dozens of bins. I could buy as many as I wanted -- even only one if I chose -- put it in a little paper bag, write the SKU on it, pay and be on my way. Then Home Depot came along and too many people were lured away by the people-in-orange-vests-who-sell-cheap-hardware-they-know-nothing-about. If you're lucky enough to find the screw you need, you'll have to buy a box of 100. You take them home, use two, and put the rest in your garage to collect dust until you die.

Then they opened a second Home Depot only two miles from the first one, but that store's parking lot is usually empty. They don't seem to be putting a dent into Lowe's or Orchard Supply's business yet. The HD location scout must have been a moron because you can barely see the store from the nearest big street. And to think the fucking City of Burbank probably bent over backwards to get that store there.

Who can top three paragraphs about hardware stores?

I boycott Home Depot because they helped drive my favorite hardware stores out of business. Plus their service and selection sucks.

As far as boycottin', I stay away from most of the things I feel are using my money to regurgitate more crap into the world, like opening another one of their locations in a strip mall. Thats generally a bad sign. And I was pretty diligent about steering clear of fast food until McDonalds introduced the goddamn McGriddle, I'm sorry but those things are kind of like crack.
