The news of Janet Weiss joining the Jicks (and a discussion with some friends last night) got me thinking about drumming. The Jante Weiss news made me think of this because I thought "How does this really affect the sound? Will their be a noticeable difference?" I think drummers can definitely impact the sound of a band. Dave Grohl famously made Nirvana awesome with his excellent skinsmanship, though I don't really listen to Nirvana albums and think about how awesomet he drumming is, it's just really solid and perfect for the music (and that's all it needs to be, though that's just the nature of their music. Same goes for the guitar work and the bass playing).
So how often do you think of an album (or a song, but really more an entire album) as having great drumming? You love the melodies or the vocals or the chord structure or the solos, but how often do you say "the drumming is fantastic on that record"? Aside from the people out their who have their drum heroes (ie. Neil Pert or Jon Bonham or something similar), especially in proggier music. I don't mean wanky drums solos or 17 minute epics with 5 time signature changes (not that those aren't valid musical forms, they just lend themselves to spectacular drumming, where a 3 minute pop song generally does not).
I can, off the top of my hand, think of only a few album where the drumming stands out:
Teenager - Nick Vincent is just amazing, I wish he would have stuck around with FB.
Chavez (both of their albums and the ep that I have)- "The" James Lo is just a fearsome beast of a drummer. Always doing something interesting, always exciting the ears, yet consistently doing just what the song calls for, never overplaying, and always maintaining the feel.

I've always thought David Loverings drumming was great and I have always wondered why he didn't play drums in another band after the Pixies. Granted, his magic show must have kept him busy, but I'd think he would still have had time to find a band. |

I always liked Matt Cameron from Soundgarden. He was always pulling off some oddly timed shit that was very unique. It's just too bad he went on to join Pearl Jam.

as an aside i really like the song "d is for drums" by they might be giants. probably not many have heard it cause it a kid's cd--"here come the abc's". but they got a real cool drum solo in the song plus the vocals sound like d is for drugs. my wife would get really upset when i played it for the little one until i showed her the actual song title on the cd....

I'm suprised no one has mentioned David Lovering. I think he really stands out in my mind when it comes to drums for a "3 minute pop song". Just listen to the song "trompe le monde". His drumming is a quintessential part of what makes the Pixies great. Sometimes it isn't about how crazy difficult a drum part is, but rather how well that part supports the song while being unique and interesting in and of itself, dontcha think? |

Dale Crover from the Melvins is an amazing drummer too, with a very personal and original way to play. It's always a delight to listen to his drum parts.

i saw QOTSA twice on the Deaf tour, unfortunately w/o Grohl. Their replacement was good enough, but no Grohl. Still, one of the best live shows i've seen (despite having Nick Oliveri's exposed cock about 4 feet from my face at the club date i saw).
I think more times than not a good drummer can make or break a song. Imagine "Bone Machine" without that backwards sounding drum pattern, or "Won't Get Fooled Again" without Keith Moon's antics?

I'd never really paid attention to drumming, really, but Rob Ahlers in 50 Foot Wave, Dave Lombardo in Fantômas - and Terry Bozzio when he's filling in, I have a DVD of their 2005 show in Montreux that made my jaw drop - and Joey Baron in Zorn's recent Moonchild got the kind of response you mention from me.

I don't like Secret Machines, but I saw them in concert and their drummer's phenomenal. I also like the fella from Yeah Yeah Yeah's, and the drummer in Bloc Party - again, not a big fan of the band but I think he adds a lot to the sound that wouldn't be there with a 'normal' drummer.

I've had my share of fights with drummers. My favorite drumming that comes to mind is Adam Pfallers stuff with Jawbreaker I don't think I've ever heard him complimented he just seems slightly odd on a lot of songs and it sounds really great to me. Also all of Abe Cunninghams stuff with the deftones, he's just amazing. I've come to realize though that I know next to nothing about drumming, within my band I've had apparently what was one of the greatest drummers that ever walked the Delmarva Penninsula and a guy that just started playing a few months before he joined us and I still prefer everything he does to the first guy. Jimmy Chamberlain from the Pumpkins is pretty cool too, and Michael from the Bouncing Souls and before that Murphys Law he's always quite impressive to watch live.

i think Throwing Muses are another example where the drumming really helps define the songs...especially early TM. cause Dave Narcizo came from a marching band background so for the first few records did not use cymbals at all.
gives the records a very unique sound...
he's also an amazing drummer...and was voted best drummer in the world by some drum mag in the early 90's....
