why do you do your job, money, fun, creativity, because you have to (or any other reason)? can you have it all? fun, creativity, a good working enviornment and a good paycheck?

Yeah, nice one on the payrise benji. Hope the outback isn't being too rough on yah!

well you'd work for a year, but at the mine where i work, the truck drivers work 2 day shifts and 2 night shifts then 4 days off, and with 5 weeks of annual leave, they work less than half the year...
other sites you work 2 weeks on, 1 week off.
our site is not the norm for the roster...
the package for truck drivers recruited through a recruitment firm to work at our site doing 2:1 is worth 107k, and all you need for that is to have an HR licence.....

and also, wages are more where i live in the northwest of western australia then down south more. i assume it's because it's a very harsh place to live and work....
tho most positions are fly in/fly out...
so that means you live in perth (western aus capital city) and you fly into your site to work and fly back to perth after your 2 weeks or however long your roster is....
i don't do that - i live in the town where i work...

but when we were on holiday a few months ago we went to this organic winery which made absolutely delicious wines and ciders and the owner was saying that he was going to change career to become a truck driver in a few months because he would make a lot more money being a truck driver than owning his own business...we were shocked...and saddened...

I believe that productive work is essential to having a full life and that trying different jobs and working hard gives you experience and builds character.

But-

I never want to work again. My job is ok, not my favorite of all the jobs I've had, but it's alright.

The thing is, I want a job that I can do at home, preferably in bed. And if I can't do that I'd like a job where I only have to go in when I want to. So, say it was snowing out I could just take a couple days off and come back when the snow has melted.

Really, I don't think that all people were meant to work. I think I was born into the wrong class. I think I was meant to live a life like Dorian Gray- where I just live off my family's money, produce some kind of artwork occasionally, and go out to dinner parties every night.
Daisy Girl Posted - 09/08/2006 : 13:14:36
benji, so since i can work in australia, i could come there and work in the desert driving a truck for 6mos and get paid 100,000 pounds a year??

Homers_pet_monkey Posted - 09/08/2006 : 10:22:42
Those figures are making my head spin.

Seriously tempting.

benji Posted - 09/08/2006 : 06:42:58
mike,
if you have an HR licence you'd be set.
start on 90-100k depending on where you work....
sure, you'd have to work 12 hour days, but just think of the money....

in the current environment, unskilled labour generally gets paid more then skilled...
so people who work under me get paid more than me....
sick, i know, but thats just the way it is...
and i'm now on 91k so to get more than me, i think is pretty damn good....

anyways, i've had too much sauvignon blanc so must stop....

benji Posted - 09/07/2006 : 19:39:37
thanks daisy,

yeah very nice to feel appreciated.
but the thing about the mining industry in western australia at present, there is such a shortage of labour that there are so many opportunities and almost always someone who's willing to pay you more than what you're earning at your current job. thats why salaries are just going stupid...
but also why i'm hear to reap the rewards....certainly wouldn't live in the desert for any other reason....

for eg - people are getting paid over 100k to just drive trucks in our mine.
and they only work less than half the year because of their roster...
it's amazing.

speaking of work, i just got my annual payrise yesterday...12.5%
was pretty pleased with that...
got 13% last year after only working with the company for 3 months, and now 12.5%...

almost worth remaining living in the outback....

Buyer of raw materials for a candy manufacturer.

Work for my mortgage and kiddies.

I get a 10K plus bonus at the end of the year though and they put about the same per year for my Sep Ira account so it isn't all that bad.

ha de ha ha ha Simon!

Daisy - I was kind head hunted - so i cant help you there!!

Just keep your eyes and ears open to what industries (that you are interested in) are going up/down etc, developments in that market - the you will have your head screwed on in an interview, and they will be impressed that they dont have to teach you the industry

Gyspy, how did you find your fun job? I always have knack for picking the boring ones in declining industries. maybe if i know your secrets, i can be more savy this time around!

I love the actual job part of my job, just not all of the constant studying that comes along with it. I'm a pilot. I was recently flying out of Victoria landing and taking off from the ocean. That was awesome. I had to constantly watch out for these big fat seals who are all overweight because they don't have many predators in that area and there is an abundance of salmon. They just laze around the airport all day.

Forget your yin and go f*ck your yang.

So if you work there for another 332 years, you will never have to actually go to work, but will still get paid. Cool.
