Posted - 06/25/2006 : 22:09:41 i guess this will date myself, and i'm not really arguing that it's a bad thing, but something i've noticed about going to concerts now, versus going to concerts when i was a wee lad is that the crowds seem so docile these days.
going to concerts when i was in high school (or younger) i remember it being a much more sketchy affair. there were just way more hard-core scary characters, more drug use, and, usually, at almost every show at least one fight broke out. i remember always being afraid of getting knifed or whatever..
when i go to concerts now the crowds are markedly more clean-cut and timid; Moby look-alikes, Death Cab For Cutie fans.. etc..
not a judgement call. it's probably a good thing that there isn't much violence at shows. but that did, admittedly, add another level of excitement to going to a show. i kind of miss the gang violence and psychotic people on acid going into convulsions
any other oldies have the same sense? or am i just off here?

To me, the most sickening part of this story, is that Korn (at least until a day or two ago) has not issued a statement on the incident. How can you stand by and not say something to this poor guy's family? If i were in that band, i would be fucking destroyed right now with guilt. I've been to shows where bands have said "please calm down, you're hurting people." That should be the norm, not the exception.

Richardson was declared dead on Tuesday afternoon. He allegedly remained on life support so doctors could harvest his organs in order for them to be donated to someone in need.

Posted - 08/07/2006 : 03:40:03 I've also noticed a general mellowing at concerts, and while part of me misses the excitement, the part of me that has had a broken collarbone for the last three years is really rather grateful. I recently saw the Eels at the ampitheater at the Minnesota Zoo, but felt safe going because I knew I had handicap seats in front, separated from the rest of the audience. The last time I saw the Eels at First Ave. it was pretty rowdy. This time people sat in their seats for the most part. Towards the end of the show some big drunk guy came down in front of me and my friends and was trying to get everybody else to "get down here and fuckin' party!!" I guess he didn't notice the fragile lookin' guy in the wheelchair with his arm in a sling... in the handicap section...where the drunk guy wanted everybody to "fuckin' party!!"

Posted - 06/27/2006 : 10:11:34 I been too enough Slayer shows and been tossed like a rag doll and trampled upon. It was fun and I miss it sometimes but if I see a pit at a show nowadays I mainly think about how I could get injured and just find a comfy spot by the bar. It does seem that shows were a lot more unpredictable back when but maybe becuase I've been to loads of'em by now, they're a little more eh.... predictable.

To be fair though, it wasn't as much anyone else's fault as mine. I was pressed up against the stage, and when they started playing Let's Not Wrestly Mt. Heart Attack, I started dancing all over the place, and I smashed my face accidentally into a monitor.
I also think I might be temporarily deaf. Once again though, not my fault.

Posted - 06/26/2006 : 21:47:25 fair enough my experience with crime has risen dramatically due to a location change and part of my left wing libertarian attitude dictates me to go doomsday cynic perhaps the perception for others has changed perhaps the incidents caught up with us? perhaps the insurance no longer allows for any fooling around? so many variables it could be interesting question

Posted - 06/26/2006 : 21:05:15 I've had the wish that fans at some of the shows I've been to in the last few years would get into the music at least...not necessarily form a violent mosh pit, but at least jump up and down and have fun. Let the music take them over. The Pixies show was pretty fun on the floor area, and I got to crush up close and people were pretty delirius, but many other shows have had that "I'm too cool to get into the music at all" feel.
A futureheads show last year in Dallas was like that: sold out, packed room, yet even the youngsters in the crowd at the very front weren't getting into it too much. Maybe the lack of ability to buy alcohol for them at the bar (18 & up show I guess it was) affects that.
