'Strangers In The Night', the double live album by UFO, is the best of that whole genre. IMO.

I'd agree with Dog in the sand as it reveals new things on every listen, but for sheer use of sound i'd have be boring and say OK Computer. For atmosphere time, Tom Waits is up there too, so lo-fi and moody, even though at times almost too much so for me.

Maybe not the best production ever, but Elvis Costello's "Delivery Man",it's his best album since "Brutal Youth".
DM was produced by Dennis Herring who also produced Throwing Muses "Real Ramona"- they're similar in some ways, like EC's "Button My Lip" and TM's "Hook In Her Head".

By the way, if you've got the songs on your computer, try playing "Trompe" or "FB" starting with the last some and going backwards- they both flow pretty well, and in an interesting way.

AC/DC's Highway To Hell sounds righter than most records.

I really love the sound of Frank Black & The Catholics "Dog In The Sand" and The Cowboy Junkies "Trinity Sessions"

In fact if I was going to show off a stereo system...I'd probably use this cd....just think of the beginning of the album and the beginning of Hang on to Your Ego!!!!

Sounds pretty nice, Denis. Silver Mt Zion are pretty ace as well, might look into that.

What about the "worst production on an album ever"? Surely it has to be something by Nigel Godrich. The guy has the ability to turn every other album by artists I like into something blander than a Dave Matthews Band record.

That said, check out his albums with low, which actually disprove my point.

didn't albini only produce 'things we lost...' from low?
i really like albini's drum sound too on many records, but he just destroyed it on mogwai's 'my father my king' - they sound horrible.

i think the best production of any record i can think of is Pod by the Breeders. yes, an albini production....just perfection.

but my favourite drum sound is on the beginning of '2 rights make 1 wrong' from mogwai's 'rock action'. i used to listen to the intro over and over again on my really good components and it blew my mind every time...that was produced by dave friedman i believe...which is weird cause everything else he's done has been poor.

You don't like the way Mercury Rev's records sound?

I really like Dave Fridmann's work, that guy can fill out a record. See also, Flaming Lips, and the new Low album (again with the Low...), that sounds great to my ears.

I did an assignment on Steve Albini as part of my degree - it was great to turn up the volume and kick off Kerosene in front of a room full of kinda nerdy tech-heads.

I've had more than one live sound engineer play Queensryche's Empire as he was dialing in our sound checks. I'm not a huge fan of Queensryche, but I guess it's commonly known as the most perfect rock record soundwise.

We could argue all day about the best produced record. It comes down to a sound that you find interesting enough to listen to over and over. Great songs typically get lumped into the "great produced" category, as well. That's why I have a difficult time deciding if any, or all of FB's music has been helped, or hindered by producers. They're all great, interesting, songs.

I actually closely listened to the production on Doolittle a few days ago, some of the drum, (specifically snare) sounds were horrible! Proof that if the song and performance is good enough, it doesn't matter how it sounds.

Pixies - Surfer Rosa
My Bloody Valentine - Loveless

However, I really don't like the production of Bandwagonesque by Teenage Fanclub: there is a distinct lack of oomphiness in the guitars (apart from I think 'Is This Music?' was done really well.) Anybody else think the same?

to be honest, my statement was a little of an exaggeration. i haven't heard enough of mercury rev's stuff to form an opinion about that - i was stating it from his work with mogwai - particularly come on die young and rock action.
it's just that the drum intro on 2 rights juyst blows everything else away....

Cobain felt Nevermind sounded a little too slick and poppy, not that he was knocking Butch Vig, it's kind of how he felt after Nirvana's success, I think. He seemed to have wanted to go back to a rwwer sound, hence Albini.

Agreed, and generally Albini's production fullstop.

It's such an enormous indie-noise-rock cliché, but he really does have the best drum sounds. It sounds like drumkit, not an overly-processed drum machine, something that can't be said for today's modern rock production.

And the way you can hear the guide vocal in the background, slightly out of time/tune with the main vocal.. or maybe it's doubletracked to sound like that on purpose.. either way, I fackin' love it!

I remember reading something, I think it was Kurt Cobain talking about In Utero, and he said Albini used a lot of old microphones, German makes and the like. Apparently, he likes to stick microphones everywhere to capture that unique, live sound.

Or you could just say In Utero like me ; )

I also nominate Radiohead, 'Kid A'.

Beautiful arrangements. Cohen's voice seems very well recorded. Very full.
