We all love Tom Waits, right? What's your favourite album?
My favourite is The Black Rider; 'November,' 'All the Right Bullets,' 'Black Box Theme,' 'I'll Shoot the Moon', 'T'aint No Sin,' and of course, the title track; brilliant!
My least favourite is Closing Time. I'd never heard properly early Tom Waits until that, and I kind of wish I hadn't.

I have been holding my breath ever since FB floated the notion of TW producing a Pixies album. Lie to me. Tell me it's going to happen. Write to somebody. Do something. Make it happen. And was TW's album Bone Machine any kind of reference to Surfer Rosa's opener? I'd like to know if TW likes FB's music or if he's even heard it.
I agree with everybody's choices cos whichever TW album is on could qualify as a favourite. Nighthawks At The Diner, though, is a favourite when it's not spinning too. Putnam County could be his greatest song ever.
Seeing him live on the Real Gone tour was an amazing feeling. Maybe the 20 year wait had something to do with it.

I can contribute to this now! At least in a very minor way. I've listened to Mule Variations a lot recently, and it's the only Waits album I've really heard. I like it lots and am starting to think I've made a mistake in leaving it this long. I also have Bone Machine to get through, but after that... who knows.

That orphan set is going to rock. As far as the cover, it fits right in with most of his more recent album art. As far as my favorite Tom, I've got to go with Rain Dogs. I'd been listening to Tom for years before Black Letter Days, and I was suprised and delighted to hear Black Rider kick off and close that album. Unfortunatly, Black Rider is probably one of my least favorite Tom Waits albums. I tend to like Frank's version of the title track. Besides Rain Dogs, Swordfishtrombones, Bone Machine, Alice, and Blood Money are all right up there. Real Gone is pretty sweet too, although a little TOO raw in places for my taste. As far as classic Tom Waits, gotta go with Small Change or Heart of Saturday Night. |

I like the fact that I was totally into hair metal while Waits was releasing what I now consider to be his best work.
I got some strange bootleg of the Black Rider with a lot of raw cuts on it. It's probably my fave. I'm on a quest to find out what instrument is makin' them BING BONG sounds on Gospel Train. An amazing piece of work that album. The Flash Pan Hunter is in my top five songs ever methinks.

Waits Round Up Three Discs Worth Of 'Orphans'

Tom Waits opens his vaults for the first time on the three-disc collection "Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers and Bastards," due Nov. 21 via Anti-. Of the 54 tracks, 30 are new recordings. The set will also feature a 94-page booklet.
The "Brawlers" disc is dominated by Waits' more blues-leaning material, and boasts contributions from Primus' Les Claypool, guitarists Dave Alvin and Marc Ribot, saxophonist Ralph Carney, harmonica virtuoso Charlie Musselwhite and drummer Brain.
"Bawlers" features ballads, waltzes and Celtic tunes, including "Goodnight Irene," "Little Drop of Poison" and "Bend Down the Branches." The "Bastards" disc loads up on Waits' experimental side via such songs as "King Kong," "Spidey's Wild Ride," "Army Ants" and "Book of Moses."
Waits says the album is full of "songs of dubious origin rescued from cruel fate and now left wanting only to be cared for. Show that you are not afraid and take them home. They don't bite, they just need attention."
The artist just completed a rare, short tour that featured a midnight show at Cleveland's House of Blues, Waits' first club date in 30 years.

Frank's Wild Years is probably my favorite, but they're all pretty spectacular.
Actually, Nighthawks at the Diner may tie Frank's for me. The man set up a real functioning nightclub in his studio for that one, he did!

Yeah, the typical ones that people get into, but they really make an impact. He has so many great songs on varying albums. Frank's Wild Years is a great album, too. Anyone see Big Time? That's a cool stage show-concert movie

By the way, for any of you who haven't heard them, my favourite Tom Waits recordings, period, are definitely the KPFK Folk Scene sessions he did in 1973, '74, and '75. UNBELIEVABLY good stuff! Incredible, a MUST have for any Tom Waits fan. They are my absolute favourite, most prized bootlegs I own by any artist (well, except perhaps all of my Beach Boys Smile bootlegs, but that's different...).

I don't think I've been that fair on it actually. It's not that I wanted to hear another Alice or Black Rider; I feel that it's just missing that tiny element of humour and darkness that seems woven into a handful of his other albums, and that's what first attracted me to Tom Waits. I almost feel that nearly anyone could've made Closing Time. The same can't be said for a good percentage of his other albums.

I honestly think he has (more or less) gotten younger, and better, with age. Not to completely discount his pre-Island, pre-Kathleen output, but it truly seems like he is working backwards. I love it.
So for me, it's something like:
Bone Machine / Real Gone
Mule
Rain Dogs
Frank's
Black Rider
Blood Money
SwordfishTBones
Alice
Yeah, so they aren't exactly reverse chronological, but listen to Real Gone, and then try to fully ingest that the dude who conceptualized and then realized the album is old enough to be your dad. He's a really good antedote to the "24 year old made Doolittle" syndrome.
Tom Waits must live to be 86, and never stop making records. I bet his 34th record, when it's released in 2034, will somehow prove to be the inspiration for the forbears of rock music, in a cosmic, circular way.
I wish my dad would beatbox for me every once in a while.
Probably my favorite song of his is on Black Rider though: November. Partly, it's the "November seems odd, you're my firing squad" line, but it's more the poignant use of the saw (?) that I used to think was a Theremin (or is it the other way around). Sure the Beach Boys had a Theremin-like instrument backing up a song, but November has a f***ing saw solo. Saws aren't supposed to make you cry, unless they're ploughing through your leg.
I mean:

My favourites of his are always changing. Right now I'm really digging The Heart of Saturday Night, and would probably say it's my favourite. It's just got this wonderful, folky vibe to it that I don't find in any of his other records (which isn't to say that his other records are bad, but just that this one is very unique and I love it). Other top contenders are Frank's Wild Years, Alice, and Small Change. I'm ashamed to say I don't own and haven't heard Blue Valentine, Foreign Affairs, The Black Rider, or Mule Variations, so I can't comment on those. It's been a while since I've listened to Nighthawks at the Diner, and I think I might like it a lot more after recently rediscovering The Heart of Saturday Night.
Big Time is also worth a mention. Those versions of "Shore Leave" and "Telephone Call from Istanbul" in particular are mindblowing!

Though Rain Dogs is great, my favorite is Foreign Affairs, with Small Change in 2nd place.
What I listen to most is a Cd I burned with all my favorite songs, like:
"Postcard from a Hooker..."
"Pasties and a G-String"
"Hang on St. Christopher"
"Telephone Call from Istanbul"
"Cold Cold Ground" &
"Cold Water"
I wish that I had heard "The Black Rider" before I saw FB do it (I just like hearing the originals first).
He started a show in Northampton, MA in 2001 with it, saying "Let's break the ice with a little Tom Waits" and everyone went crazy. After seeing him do it that night and again in Vermont, the album version was a little disappointing. ("I've Seen Your Picture" was also 100 times better than the album version.)

"black rider" is a good solid album, one of his best. but i think my favorite is "tom waits: VH1 Storytellers". that was an excellent performance of songs spanning his career... really an awesome album. |

My favourite by far is Black Rider, it was the first of his I heard. I´d borrowed it from my aunt while I was supposed to be studying for my end-of-school exams in summer 95 and felt this data-bomb go off in me and my bedroom stank of oil paints from then on. It´s one of my 5 favourite albums.
After that one, the Frank´s Wild years trilogy, with the eponymous one my favourite of those. Mule Variations, Bone Machine and Real Gone get regular airings too (and everything with Marc Ribot on guitar). Of the earlier stuff, Blue Valentine, Closing Time or Nighthawks.
