Posted - 02/24/2006 : 04:38:55 So I'm like going to New York 6th April - 11th April, and I like want to try out a cool indie club or two. Maybe even some cool indie bars? Any recommendations of places to go, people to see, things to check out?

Concerts, usually.
How did this New York thread become an Italy thread, anyway? I wish I had the time and money to travel to Europe.

Nope, I was there, but... what did I eat there... not pizza in any case. NOW you tell me. Very pretty city, that, by the way. Actually, a fantastic country.

Fair, you're right, I'm sorry to offend anyone. Just my personal opinion as a traveller - which is what we're talking about here. I was there for four days, and I don't imagine that he will be there any longer, so I'd say my rather quick-opinion relative to a local is relevant. That said, I suppose I could've sugar coated it, but if someone's looking for honest advice, I'm going to give it. I'll just give it more carefully. My apologies for being blunt and offending.
Anyway, like I said, good pizza, and there are some cool areas, but I found it large, dirty, and rather crime-ridden. People from there were telling me the same thing, and I almost had to push my way past the guy running the hostel because he wouldn't let me go out at night for fear of my own safety. I finally was able to leave when I left my passport, wallet (sans a little cash for the night) and camera in the safe. I prefer to get my own opinion on cities and don't really care much for visiting a city and not doing anything out of fear, but I believe he was correct (if overzealous) in his cautions.

Posted - 02/28/2006 : 07:19:30 I hear what you are saying about Rome Dean, but I think it's still well worth it. It's such a historically important city, and to be fair, if you really explore, there are lots of hidden gems. My aunty lived there for quite a few years.
My final memory of the Vatican is being so drunk that I was searching all the scooters parked around, to see if any of them had keys in so I could get back to the hotel (the behaviour of an absolute ASS I know but it was very very late/early and I was VERY VERY DRUNK).
Had I found some keys, I would probably now be dead.
Alcohol, who'd drink it eh?
Please forgive me Pope!

Milan is just very industrial. It's not as geared toward tourists. I have a friend who lives there and can't wait to get out.

Posted - 02/27/2006 : 19:18:01 Yeah, I heard it so much I actually changed my plans and skipped Milan entirely when I was over there. Industrial, lots of attitude, not very pretty, really only good for shopping was the consensus from travellers.
Rome is big, noisy, and very off-putting, but has its moments. Of course there are the well known things like the Colliseum and Vatican (both must sees, though the Vatican may leave you with a sour taste in your mouth when you exit the gold-lined rooms into the surrounding poverty). The Spanish Steps are nice, they have a great 'jardin' or park nearby, of course the nightlife is interesting, and so on.
Florence is great, and I LOVED Venice. Naples also not worth seeing except for two things:
1) Home of the best pizza/pizzaria in the world. Really. Trust me. And, you know, the Italians who voted the place 'best pizza in Italy'. I've tried a lot of pies in my day, but it lived up to expectations.
2) Pompeii/Herculaneum. Actually, don't bother with Pompeii. Herculaneum is closer, less packed, and more condensed - you can see all the same things in a much nicer setting with half as much walking. Mt. Vesuvius can be nice if you have the right winds, but most of the time you just look down on smog.
3) I hung out in a small town near Casserta for a few days and loved it. If you can find some people that have a place or befriend some Italians to get the 'real deal' I promise you'll enjoy Italy more than otherwise possible.

Simon, don't forget your ID. It can be tough to get in some places.
Shame you can't go to CBGB's anymore.
By the way, where is all this money coming from? First snowbaording, now New York. So far you have copied my exact holiday pattern of 2002. If you go to Poland and Portugal in the summer, I will be a little freaked out.

No, I'm going to Berlin in May and probably Italy some point in the summer. My gf's parents are taking us to NY.

You should try to dig up the old thread from when Cult of frank visited the City, if it isn't archived. There were lots of good suggestions in there of things to see and places to go. I'd look for it myself, but the site search thing never works for me.
