I'm fucking sick of all this Beatles' fanboyism. Face it: they sucked. The only reason they're heralded as the best band of all time is because they made billions of dollars for their record company, Time Warner.

Fuck that shit. I'm tired of seeing unappreciated bands, like The Velvet Underground or the Cornhaiser Ruffletons go unnoticed because they don't pander to people with shitty tastes like the Beatles did and still do with you. Fuck the Beatles. Fuck them in their butthole. If it weren't for their producer Rick Rubin, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr would be living in some ditch in Liverpool, if unfortunately they weren't dead by now.

And if it weren't for Sony/BGM milking the brand for all they could, IE, RERELEASING A BEATLES ABLUM WITH MINOR ADDITIONS EVERY FUCKING YEAR, they would be nowhere.

Incidentally, has anyone else heard that live from the board recording of Linda McCartneys' backing vocals during "Hey Jude". Laughably awful or awfully laughable, which ever you prefer. I'll post it if I can find the link.

And when you listen to his first two albums (McCartney and Ram) you start to pick up on the brutal genius of his songwriting. That's why I like Chaos & Creation so much; it really taps that early-Macca ass.

I like McCartneys' "Wonderful Christmas" song. Whenever I hear that corny ass keyboard intro it makes me smile. It takes big ol' balls to put out music that crappy.

Try saying that sentence 10 times very fast.

And just as a sidenote regarding kathryn's quip regarding Ringo, he actually was an excellent drummer. When I was younger I myself had said that Ringo wasn't that great of a drummer. But the more I listened and the more I read into the band, I saw that they couldn't have had a better drummer. He played exactly what the songs needed for a solid foundation. He wasn't an attention whore like a lot of drummers are today. I think Ringo and Scott are similar in that respect.

That was my point, that's why I mentioned Scott.

They walked quite near the watchers beneath the tree, swinging
lanterns which made soft and crazy lights dance among the trees
and grass, chattering contentedly, and actually singing a song
about how terribly nice everything was, how happy they were, how
much they enjoyed working on the farm, and how pleasant it was to
be going home to see their wives and children, with a lifting
chorus to the effect that the flowers were smelling particularly
nice at this time of year and that it was a pity the dog had died
seeing as it liked them so much. Arthur could almost imagine Paul
McCartney sitting with his feet up by the fire one evening,
humming it to Linda and wondering what to buy with the proceeds,
and thinking probably Essex.

Oh, I love "Silly Love Songs." Mainly because I watched Give My Regards To Broadstreet too many times when I was really little and I always liked that part of the movie. And you do realize that that song was written to be as schmaltzy as possible, as a response to Lennon saying McCartney was only capable of writing "silly love songs," right? Out of context, it's tacky (but always catchy). In context, it was a pretty ballsy thing for McCartney to do.

No need to apologize. I still can't get past "Silly Love Songs." But I do appreciate your respectful, instructive tone on this board, as I am sure do many others here.

Thanks, Kathryn. I apologize. I get a little defensive when people bad mouth my boys. And to remark on Carl's comment regarding McCartney's Wonderful Christmas Time, yes, it's terribly cheezy, and in 1979 it embodied a lot of the things I think McCartney could have done without in the 70's (not to mention it being an adequate precursor to his 1980 synth-laden release McCartney II). But I happened to hear that song on the radio late last night in my car, and I cranked it up. I don't know if my mild sleep deprivation or the pea-soup fog I was driving through had anything to do with it, but there's some trippy noises in that song. The percussion and the synth have a lot of idiosyncratic fondling of eachother in a strange way. It's the sort of thing you'd really only catch if you did have it playing really loud in your car or on headphones. Granted, he has many, many other songs that I'd rather listen to under those circumstances, but if you come across it on your radio dial, give it a try. I'm sure most people who enjoy quirky music (many of whom are members of this forum for that very reason) can find something in that song to appreciate. Macca is always good for that.

This has to be one of the most laughable posts I've ever read. I would consider myself a diehard Beatles fan, but I'm very insulted that somebody would say it's only because they made a shit-ton of money. That has jack to do with it. Normally I'd try to at least acknowledge and appreciate somebody else's point of view, but spunXtain obviously has absolutely no comprehension of what he's arguing.

First off, TVU has not gone unappreciated. That's absurd. I can't argue the Cornhaiser Ruffletons, as I've never heard of them. Perhaps that's spunXtain's band.

Second, if the Beatles were only interested in pandering to people with shitty tastes, they never would have written their own songs and insisted on recording them, something unheard of prior to Please, Please Me. The real money-makers of the time recorded songs written by other people. They occasionally did mushy songs like Til There Was You in their early, early years just so they could play at more venues that wouldn't allow their usual brand of music. They could have kept playing live making billions and billions more, but they knew that wasn't making them better musicians so they stopped playing live. That doesn't sound like pandering.

Third, does spunXtain even know who Rick Rubin is? He produced the BEASTIE BOYS. Not THE BEATLES. There's a big freakin' difference. The Beatles has George Martin as their producer for all of their albums (save The Beatles and Let It Be), and yes, he added a drastic amount to their ability to create the music they wanted, and any person with a sense of history of Rock & Roll owes a great deal of grattitude to George Martin for just that. George Martin invented a lot of the recording techniques that contemporary musicians take for granted.

Fourth, what has Sony/BMG released? And what has been rereleased every year? If spunXtain knows something I don't know, I'd really like know it, too. The last Beatles release was Let It Be...Naked, which definately doesn't constitute "minor additions." It stripped off all of Phil Spector's extra production and brought it back to the initial intentions of that album, which was for it to be raw and live. The closest thing to Let It Be...Naked would be the original Get Back album, mixed by Glyn Johns, which has never been released. And before LIB..N (which was released in late 2003...where's the 2004 and 2005 rereleases?) They released "1" which was a collection of number one songs. If somebody has a problem with a greatest hits album, or any rereleases for that matter, then he or she sure as hell shouln't be buying anything like Death To The Pixies or Wave Of Mutilation, or the forthcoming FB&TC box set.

None of this even covers the Beatles musicianship. They were clever, catchy songwriters from the moment Lennon and McCartney got together, and from Help! on through the end of their career they never stopped rewriting the way music was made and recorded.

Also, there's no mention of Brian Epstein. Certainly if you're going to argue the Beatles business practices, you might want to at least acknowledge the existence of their manager; i.e. the one who made them wear suits, play shorter sets, and get the amount of money he thought they deserved. Epstein was, in my eyes, the best manager in rock. Not because of the things I previously mentioned, of course, but for the amazingly scrupulous way he handled the Beatles and his other bands. He was one of the most admired and respected guys in the business. Maybe learn a few things about him before disregarding him.

I've read many interviews with almost everybody involved with the Beatles recordings and hardly a one of them has failed to mention how Ringo was the most solid drummer they've ever met. He never wavered a beat in a decade's worth of recording.
I'm not just trying to show off trivia here. This was really just a baseless thread.
