Posted - 06/27/2006 : 05:24:02 Hunkpapa is my least favourite Throwing Muses album, although my favourite Throwing Muses song - Dizzy - is on it. Same story with the Pixies, Dig for Fire is my favourite song, but Bossanova least favurite album.

I googled the name to spell it right and this is what came up. I don't know if it's related to the alb title.
"Hunkpapa From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search The Hunkpapas were a Native American group, one of the seven branches of the Lakota Sioux tribe. During the 1870s, when the Native Americans of the Midwest were fighting the United States, they were asked to join and did fight alongside Sitting Bull.

Posted - 06/26/2006 : 12:53:10 I got In A Doghouse a little while ago, and only actually listened to it recently-well, the first disc (the debut album and EP stuff). Great. Kind of early REM but more angsty and wild. Kristin Hersh's vocals actaully remind me a bit of Les Claypool. I've been considering checking out the rest of their catalogue, I've seen most of their albums going cheap.

Throwing Muses are going to be in Boston at the Middle East, Friday, August 11, 2006. There's a NYC show too, it's all on the website. |

Posted - 06/26/2006 : 03:57:15 "In a DogHouse", has to be the best and nearly all you need when getting the muses. It a brilliant double CD. Real ramona, University or House Tornado aint nothing to the songs on DogHouse. |

Posted - 06/26/2006 : 02:49:27 So I bought my first TM album this week-end, University, for €3 (bargain bins, I love you!). It seems nobody has mentioned this record except benji, so I'm not sure it's the best place to start, but hey, it was the only one. Kristin's voice is great. I find the sound a bit dated, but I'll listen closely and see if I'm hooked.

Posted - 12/02/2005 : 17:07:05 I've noticed that every time that I've been driving with someone (I usually have mixes of all different songs and artist on CDs that I play in my car) whenever the Muses's "Surf Cowboy" is playing people always ask "Who is this?" There's something about that song.
One of the 4AD sites has been saying for years that a Muses B-sides album is coming. That would be great.
If anyone is looking to try Throwing Muses they should start with an EP. "Bright Yellow Gun" has three perfect songs. "Counting Backwards" has a long, electric guitar version of "Amazing Grace". "Not Too Soon" has a cover of "Cry Baby Cry" and a longer remix of "Him Dancing". And "Shark" has a re-recording of that song that is much better than the album version, plus variations of three other "Limbo" songs, including "Limbobo" , a longer version with a cool drum-machine intro.
I've seen a few TM shows (including a 2003 show w/ Tanya). "Mania" is incredible live. I wish there was an official release with good sound quality ( I'd also like to see Madonna release a recording of "Like A Virgin" from the Blond Ambition tour- I always hated that song until she did that version.) . 50" Wave should cover it ("Mania") for a B-side. The "Take" Live Re-mix is so clear it sounds like it was done in a studio.
One more thing, I'd really like to get "In a Doghouse" but it sucks that it has only "Chains Changed" but not "The Fat Skier" too. |

Posted - 12/02/2005 : 16:20:05 I googling to find an answer and there was some bits saying she quit the band to marry the guy that did their lighting. There was also a dead link that seemed like it might have solo work done by her.
I also learned she grew up with Kristin and Tanya in Rhode Island. |

Posted - 12/02/2005 : 15:21:04 The bass is always great on Throwing Muses records, regardless of the bassist, it's quite remarkable. Bernard Georges in particular - his playing in 50 Foot wave is just amazing, just wonderful.

Posted - 12/02/2005 : 12:52:29 I'm not a musisian, so I don't feel well qualified to judge the talent of musicians, but I love the bass on House Tornado. There's one song near the middle of the CD (i'm terrible at remembering titles) where Leslie Langston is just wonderful on the bass. She just walks that bass around. So perfect. Does she have a reputation as a great bass player? Where is she? |

Ditto.
I am a little bummed to not see House Tornado mentioned more than ...twice?
Great album. "Colder," "Mexican Women," and "Walking In The Dark" are all lovely.

Posted - 11/30/2005 : 13:50:30 Isn't The Grotto Kristin's last solo album? That's my favourite I think. Generally I prefer her solo stuff to The Throwing Muses.
I only realised a few weeks ago that Trouble is a Cat Stevens song.

Its my most recently purchased, so I'm still getting into it. Spain is a great song, and I like Trouble a lot too.

Posted - 11/30/2005 : 12:07:19 I'm surprised nobody mentioned "Sunny Border Blue", Kristin's 2001 solo effort - it's a pure masterpiece, even better than "Limbo" in my opinion.

Posted - 11/30/2005 : 06:46:45 Oh, there's been talk of an official release for ages, you know. I think 4ad has the footage, there were snippets on the 4ad minisite when Sensuous Flaps came out...
A TM DVD has been in the works forever, too, but the '88 gig wasn't supposed to be included.
