Are we paying attention to this issue?

I hope we are!

Updated: 1:20 a.m. ET Nov. 13, 2005
HANOI - Scientists in Vietnam, where bird flu has killed 42 people,
said the deadly H5N1 influenza virus had mutated into a more dangerous form
that could breed more effectively in mammals, state media reported on Sunday. The online newspaper Vnexpress quoted Cao Bao Van, director of the Molecule Biology Department of the Pasteur Institute, Vietnam’s center of bird flu research as saying the decoding of 24 samples of the virus taken from poultry and humans showed significant antigen variation. An antigen is any foreign substance that stimulates the body’s immune system to produce antibodies

[EDIT - Moved (this has nothing to do with Frank Black, so should be in General Chat)]

Ok...FRANK BLACK, ses now I did it, so I can post about something totally unrelated if I want to, just like lots of other people...right?

That was the best line of the thread. It sounds like a Peter Sellers quote from The Party.

I'm sorry to bring up a thread that is over a year old but the question must be asked: "Whatever happened with this?"

I remember reading this and thinking it was one of the funniest threads I'd read. I'm desperate to know after all this time, which forum member was really 'Frank Lee'?

Better detection and the advantage of having the populous occupied with something to worry about. I'm not fretting, it's the ones that creep up without warning that I think are more concerning to be honest. Bird Flu will mutate to human to human transfer I don't think there is any question about it but until that happens there's not a lot can be done. Locking away your chickens is all well and good but when the pathogen spreads from human to human and not just vector to human it will have made little difference.
lonely persuader Posted - 02/21/2006 : 04:21:19
care no?

All that stuff was always there. Its only that we can detect more of all the different types of stuff that can kill us now. Media, hype, bullshit etc. SARS killed how many? bird flu has killed how many? less than 100 worldwide in both cases. Not everyone who gets birdflu dies (not close)..
Llamadance Posted - 02/21/2006 : 02:35:24
Is this affecting anybody in a meaningful way? I mean, bird flu has now been discovered in France & Germany, and we have a few members from these countries.

I read yesterday that a virologist from a London university suggested it could mutate and spread human to human within 18 months. Is anyone more nervous about this than they were when Frank Lee was on his crusade? (incidentally, my wife is, and certainly a friend who keeps chickens is thinking of getting rid of them)

On a slightly related note, I was also reading yesterday that we are discovering human pathogens at a greater rate now than ever before. Mostly these are transferred from animals. Do you think it's because humans have over populated the earth? Maybe because it's getting warmer? Better detection? Do you care?

This has got to be some sort of research about how long people will talk about a topic for or something. And btw Frank Lee, the pseudonym is from a frank black song about the Invaders, I guess you might relate to it currently but your hardly a "fist fighting crusader".. more like an annoying cunt.

Don't know the first thing about microbiology or epidemiology, but don't you think that at some point in this century something like this is in the cards? I'm certainly not claiming that 2006 is the year, or even that the worst is something for alarm (speaking evolutionarily of course), but surely this ancient dance of micro- and macro-beings will continue.

No, we are spending OUR money to inform YOU

Well at least that confirms the government is working on it and I'm not making the whole thing up…we are making progress.

Would that be FEMA, because I had the pleasure of meeting and working with some of those folks over the years #61516;

Or maybe one of the other Bush administration agencies…I’m sure they are all sharp people, who have everything under control. #61514;

Funny how people either feel they should panic or do nothing…humm, anyway, I’m not shitting myself either, but let’s say…just for sake of conversation, that your friend had a little too much exposure to H5N1 and got sick with it and actually shit himself…all over the kitchen floor. How would you disinfect the area…what would you use? If you decided to keep him at home with you instead of sending him to a hospital warehouse where there would be one doctor for every 50 people showing up for treatment, (a lot of whom may not even have the Bird Flu until they get around all those others who do), how would you isolate him and keep yourself and others virus free?

I don’t think you have any idea what the answers to these questions are and you probably don’t even think you need to know those answers, but you do.

If this thing strike, what you know or don’t know before it gets here will probably determine your survival. Secretary of Health and Human Services Michael Levitt said on a recent interview that what you do in the 100 hours before a Pandemic is a lot more important than what you do in the first 4 or 5 hours after one starts and he urged everyone to make preparations.

That’s the purpose of this thread and others. Outside of assurances from people in the Bush administration that they are working on it, no one is saying they will take care of you or actually telling you how to take care of yourself in a Pandemic…day-to-day.

On most of the other threads, we spend time putting out information. On a few threads like this, we spend time reading post from people who rant and rave and want others to kill themselves and love the word FU#K

But its ok…because you have people like me, who don’t force anyone to even read a thread, never less respond to it, but will GIVE you answers if you want them.

That would be the British Government (I always marvel at the arrogance of some people who do believe the world starts and ends with them and theirs) so nothing to do with the Bush administration, at all. In fact to the best of my knowledge you haven't even had a single case of the normal variant of avian flu over there yet. So easy tiger.

As for your comment on panic here your tone is directed to incite exactly that. Hospital warehouses and shit all over the floor, I mean really. Personally, I would know what to do but I would imagine most rational sensible people if they suspected someone they had contact with was suffering something potentially shit scary would alert the authorities at the earliest possible opportunity and recieve guidance from them. Sensible people, you credit us with very little sense mister Lee. The virus hasn't even mutated and you're talking up the fear.

Spending your money by educating us poor silly people right. What a waste of fucking money this is then, as no one is payng attention. Have you ever considered teaching as an alternative career pathway, if so I'd suggest you abandon that one because you wold be terrible. Nobody responds to insults and patronisation. What we do before the pandemic, reading through I see nothing useful in your posts. Bird Flu is coming, blah blah, tamiflu, blah blah, internet link, blah blah. If your government is pissing away money by sending you to music sites to get on peoples tits I'd worry for the sanity of the government. Although it looks like you're working for a different group by your tone, I'm guessing a medical company which would explain the fear tactics, anything to get the drugs off the shelves hmm? Sales on face masks down? Need to shift more units of disinfectant?

In a pandemic situation, what do you envisage mister Lee? are you expecting some sort of black death everyone in face masks and isolation suits scenario? I think maybe you have been watching a little too much late night sci fi.

Well, seems Mr. Lee has managed to convert everyone to his cause! At least the topic has been move to General Chat. Of course, it's ridiculous that the topic has'nt been locked, let alone that FL has'nt been banned.

Well, Frankie Lee and Judas Priest,
They were the best of friends.
So when Frankie Lee needed money one day,
Judas quickly pulled out a roll of tens
And placed them on a footstool
Just above the plotted plain,
Sayin', "Take your pick, Frankie Boy,
My loss will be your gain."

Well, Frankie Lee, he sat right down
And put his fingers to his chin,
But with the cold eyes of Judas on him,
His head began to spin.
"Would ya please not stare at me like that," he said,
"It's just my foolish pride,
But sometimes a man must be alone
And this is no place to hide."

Well, Judas, he just winked and said,
"All right, I'll leave you here,
But you'd better hurry up and choose
Which of those bills you want,
Before they all disappear."
"I'm gonna start my pickin' right now,
Just tell me where you'll be."

Judas pointed down the road
And said, "Eternity!"
"Eternity?" said Frankie Lee,
With a voice as cold as ice.
"That's right," said Judas Priest, "Eternity,
Though you might call it 'Paradise.'"

"I don't call it anything,"
Said Frankie Lee with a smile.
"All right," said Judas Priest,
"I'll see you after a while."

Well, Frankie Lee, he sat back down,
Feelin' low and mean,
When just then a passing stranger
Burst upon the scene,
Saying, "Are you Frankie Lee, the gambler,
Whose father is deceased?
Well, if you are,
There's a fellow callin' you down the road
And they say his name is Priest."

"Oh, yes, he is my friend,"
Said Frankie Lee in fright,
"I do recall him very well,
In fact, he just left my sight."
"Yes, that's the one," said the stranger,
As quiet as a mouse,
"Well, my message is, he's down the road,
Stranded in a house."

Well, Frankie Lee, he panicked,
He dropped ev'rything and ran
Until he came up to the spot
Where Judas Priest did stand.
"What kind of house is this," he said,
"Where I have come to roam?"
"It's not a house," said Judas Priest,
"It's not a house . . . it's a home."

Well, Frankie Lee, he trembled,
He soon lost all control
Over ev'rything which he had made
While the mission bells did toll.
He just stood there staring
At that big house as bright as any sun,
With four and twenty windows
And a woman's face in ev'ry one.

Well, up the stairs ran Frankie Lee
With a soulful, bounding leap,
And, foaming at the mouth,
He began to make his midnight creep.
For sixteen nights and days he raved,
But on the seventeenth he burst
Into the arms of Judas Priest,
Which is where he died of thirst.

No one tried to say a thing
When they took him out in jest,
Except, of course, the little neighbor boy
Who carried him to rest.
And he just walked along, alone,
With his guilt so well concealed,
And muttered underneath his breath,
"Nothing is revealed."

Well, the moral of the story,
The moral of this song,
Is simply that one should never be
Where one does not belong.
So when you see your neighbor carryin' somethin',
Help him with his load,
And don't go mistaking Paradise
For that home across the road.

Not here to inspire you,you are making yourself more important than you are. Its like RAP music, if you don't like it, try and remember it was not intended for you. IT IS FOR SOME OF THE PEOPLE WHO MADE THE 1100 VIEWINGS of the subject Avian Influenza Has Mutated

Is it so hard to simply ignor something you have no interest in and just get on with the things you enjoy? What about that Darwin issue...talk to each other about that, or some more of those nice bird pictures, that was fun...I have information to get out.

What would really help, would be if you knew a way to get people to come to one of the thousands of government or private sites that put out information on this and many other important subjects

I've heard Frank Black's music and I like it, but I know if you really wanted to talk about that subject, nothing here is standing in your way
