It's that time again - as the end of the year approaches, i feel we should try and get in another CD Swap. However, i'd like to do this the way we tried to do the North American/Genre swaps, with one disc going out every week-ten days, so we get some space between discs. So, who's in?

Shit. If I knew this CD swap was based on FTP, I would have been in. I'm so ashamed that I still have got my Genre swap cd burned at home and I've never send them, that's why I skip CD swap threads. I think I 've got a problem with going to the Post office.
If the next one is with FTP again, I'll gladly share some music with you. |

HA! Stalking Llama paid off. Now he's put a filter on my name in his mailbox but at least I got my review. Thanks a bunch.
So, Mecca Normal. The song comes from Flood Plain which is my fave album by them (probably because it's the first one I got). Ribbon is the first track I ever heard by them and I fell in love instantly. It's only when I bought the record that I realized the song had no drums, it's so raw and intense I thought I heard a full band. In the later years I kinda stopped listening to them though cause they added a drummer to the band and it didn't sound as great as before. They have a new LP coming out in April, but I haven't heard anything of it, so I don't know, but I'll buy it. Anyway, try Flood Plain or Jarred Up (including the amazing More More More). They're fabulous, really. They have a myspace account if you know how to use this (I don't).
note: I added Mecca Normal and VCS to my mix cause I thought people would complain if there weren't any "rock" songs on it. Clever idea it seems.

Review of Denis' Mix
This mix is quite challenging for me as I'm generally not a fan of 'world' music. It probably stems from being a teenager and then never giving it a chance. The mix starts off superbly, Mecca Normal, who are entirely new to me, give a fantastic song. I love this. Unfortunately the next three tracks didn't grab me, with Joe Meek and the Bluemen being my least favourite of the mix.
I find it hard to rate music I'm completely unfamiliar with, but I quite liked MIA and Transglobal Underground, giving them a generic 3stars in iTunes. I surprised myself a bit by loving the Bryan Ferry track. I used to listen to Roxy Music all the time, so not sure why I was surprised.Bit disappointed with the Bjork track, didn't really grab me. Ali Farka Toure and Jaco Pastorius were ok, but not inspiring.

Uppers: Mecca Normal, Bryan Ferry, Velvet Cactus Society
Downers: Joe Meek, Innerzone Orchestra, Robert Wyatt
Growers: MIA, Transglobal Underground, Detroit Grand Pubah's (actually, I like this quite a lot)

Gah, you're a bunch of Philistines.I actually thought that the Lone Justice track didn't really fit in the mix, and nearly took it out.
Thanks for the review Denis, I'll give yours another listen and try and review it soon. (haha) I loved the Mecca Normal track though.
I might try and stick down my top 5 tracks from all the mixes at some point as well.

Review - Llamadance mix:
Faves: Sugar, Ash, Sakamoto, Desert Sessions, Wrens
Least faves: Lone Justice (sorry), ATDI, Sisters of Mercy
Comments: I've been listening to this mix quite a bit over the last couple of weeks. I usually skip the ATDI track and the Sisters of Mercy too (I love the original but can't get used to this cover) but the rest of the mix is quite pleasant. Starting with JC Auto is a certain sign of quality anyway. One of Sugar's top 2 or 3 songs. Ash is great, I like everything I know by them, but I only know 3 or 4 of their songs... I should check them out. Couple of fine bands in the middle of the mix, perhaps not great enough to make me buy their records but good nonetheless (Skeksis, Favours, Wrens). I've never really listened to Cat Power, I don't know if I'd like what she does but I did enjoy this particular song a lot. What about her new record, is it any good? The 2nd Maria McKee tune is much better than the first one, I like it. Like Steve Earle too. And finally Low, which is one of the bands I could never get into (cf. that other thread), the original song is great but to be fair, this cover is boring. Sorry Llama, sorry Simon. A fine selection all in all despite the 2 or 3 that didn't do it for me.

Thanks Steve. I am retrying it right now, as I was able to figure out the whole mp3 conversion finally, I think, so it looks like they are uploading correctly as we speak. I have to get ready and go to work, so renaming the songs will have to be done later (and clearing out those 44 byte files).

Review: Benji's mix.
Benji, your mix is filled with much music that is slower and more introspective than anything that I listen to regularly. I love it. I'm not in the mood for it all the time, but hearing it today for about the third and fourth listens, I enjoy just about everything. I love the songs by Dirty Three, Cat Power, Neko, and Micah Hinson. All the rest are good also. You certainly do put forth a certain feeling on this mix, kind of depressing in many parts, but also hopeful and spiritual feeling in others. I enjoyed getting a chance to hear Sigur Ros, Mogwai, and Low whom I have often heard about but never actually heard. Of those, Mogwai sounds like something I'd like to check out more, maybe also the Low album "The Great Destroyer" which I see cited quite often. Must buys for me: I do need to get a cd by Neko for sure, and maybe even Dirty Three-that's my favorite song on the mix. Now that I think about it and hear it again, maybe some Mogwai. Only misses for me: for some reason I have never liked Throwing Muses (sorry). Only chance I ever gave them was Hunkapapa or something like that. Just never did it for me. Anyway, thanks for a beautiful sounding mix.

hey everyone. I have finished my mix, and I have just gotten my new DSL to finally work tonight!!!!! Yes!!!!!! Finally!!! (last few days have been frustrating with it) I promise to upload sometime during this weekend a very nice, interesting mix to you. And I apologize for delaying it beyond my scheduled date of 12/26. As if I didn't have enought time already to get it done. Well anyway, cheers!! DSL is amazing!!!! Out of the stone ages.

hey all,
i dropped the ball on the kinks mix. life has just been too messy lately, but things are now slowing down, and i will upload the kinks mix on tuesday whe i get back from my parents house.
i have not received ANYTHING from martian-honey since this first started, so i don't know what her deal is. Superabounder is NOT off the hook (sorry Stephen), so upload away. HPM has to upload soon too.
I'm consistantly dissappointed in how people just don't care about the later mixes. its really sad for those who put a lot of time in. Apologies for the late Kinks mix, but i think we all deserve a 'shame on us' for dropping this from our priorities.

And to reciprocate, a review of Brian's mix.
A mix of two halves was my impression, the first half being more or less indie/rock and the second half with a huge vein of country/folk running through it. Surprisingly the second half is my favourite. I've always had a soft spot for folk/country, but I've been pretty selective about it. I've got one album by both Calexico and Iron & Wine, so it was great to hear them together, with "A History of Lovers" being my favourite track from the mix. Nice to hear The Kinks, a band I've probably neglected - I own nothing by them, but probably know all their singles.
In truth, I was probably a bit disappointed with the Shostakovich track, it just seemed a bit dreary and aimless - maybe because it's been taken out of context, I'm not sure. America's #1 Sweetheart was a good song - it sounds just like Malkmus, is there a reason for that?
Anyway great mix, ta.

Favs: Ryuichi Sakamoto & David Sylvian – "Forbidden Colours," The Skeksis – "Joel is Dead," Maria McKee – "Scarlover"
Least Favs: Lone Justice – "Inspiration," The Kleptones – "Jazz"
Comments: Another solid mix. I always love seeing New Jersey bands pimped, so nice job w/ the Wrens. You also included my favorite ATDI song, so bravo on that. As for the new stuff i liked, "Forbidden Colours" really stands out as one of the best tracks on the disc, and there was something really fun about "Joel is Dead." The song that grew on me the most was the "Gimme Shelter" cover, which i didn't like at all the first time through. Also possibly the best titled mix thus far. Good job.

good catch brian! but i intentionally did that to see if anyone actually listened to my mix! i have both versions on my hard drive and i guess i got them mixed up. but i do enjoy the polyphonic spree version.
started listening to sir rock's today. haven't heard of any of these tunes before. i quite like tracks 6 and 7. so far not big on that deerhoof tune. heard a lot about the band so i'll have to check out some of their other stuff.

haha-this is actually only my first review of frog's: whatever previous post I wrote about it said I wanted to do a "generic" joke review so that I could participate in the thread (without having listened to any of the mixes), but seeing as how Brian was mailing the non-ftp'ers their discs, I just received the first ones a few weeks ago, and I'm only up to listening to Benji's now. In other words, the other review was pure generic comments (supposed to be for a laugh!). Ahh. That is pretty much par for the course whenever I try to make a joke.

Frog'n'roll review: When I first listened to your mix, it rubbed me completely the wrong way, and I never got past the first 8-10 songs. I stuck with it, and it seems that several songs just took a while to grow on me. Overall, the mix reminds me of a trip through the western US, like in the movie "Wild at Heart". You did just go through the US, correct? (thought I read on here that you did, but not sure). I like the guitar lines and sounds in several songs-Pinback, Sleater-Kinney. OK,
FAVORITES: Yo La Tengo, which I had never heard (and I love the song), Sleater-Kinney (ditto), Kristen Hersh song which is mesmerizing and beautiful, Jonny Polonsky, Sweet 75. I have a soft spot in my heart for Jesus & Mary Chain, and I especially like the one at the end of your mix.
PRETTY INTERESTING: Joe Strummer song, Big Audio Dynamite (I've heard enough of them in the past, though), the Iggy Pop & Goran Bregovic song, the Walkabouts, Lisa Gerrard.
AVERAGE songs to me that I can listen to without having to change, but don't love: Firewater, Kat Onoma (they almost remind me of Frank off the "Gold" album, but not quite enough!), Shoulders, Shane MacGowan.
HATE!!: Calvin Russell "Texas" song. I just hate this song, and I LIVE in Texas. Roadrunners song-maybe I don't like it because of word association with "Bush".
I like your mix. I have listened to it a surprising number of times, and it has an interesting feel to it. For some reason I thought of Frank Black as I listened to some of the songs. Maybe it was that western feel that I described earlier, and thinking about Pistolero. Anyway, nice job.
