today was a-level results day. a-levels are the most common qualification to get into university. i got mine today. i want to do a degree in computer science.
my first choice was sussex uni and i needed BBB. failing that, my insurance was east anglia which needed BCC.
I got CCC (in psychology, computing and biology). So normally if you're just just one grade off they advise you to phone up the place and check, cause quite often they will still let you in. well, before phoning i went on the ucas website (ucas deal with applications and offers etc.) and i noticed that two days ago my offer to east anglia changed from BCC to unconditional (ie. i could fail every subject and still get in). apprently uni's get our results a few days before we do, so they must have decided they were still going to let me in and made it easier for me by just changing it to unconditional. if only i checked the website 2 days ago, i wouldn't have been shitting myself about my results, cause i would have at least known i was going to a uni whatever happened.
so yeah, i'm pretty happy. i was about 99% sure i wasn't going to get into sussex cause i knew i did shit (in comparison to the required grades). i'm happy with CCC cause it's far better than what i was fearing.
i was looking at the results for my individual modules in each subject. thank god i retook some of the modules because the new ones i did this summer were totally shit. in some of my retakes, i got As (82% in a biology unit, 95% in one psychology unit). the other modules must have brought my grades down. for example, my computing coursework was a U (and worth 30% of final grade) but in the written exams i got A/B and one C.
anyway, i think i might be the only one on these boards who got A level results today, so basically this is a thread all about me.

Considering i have double what the course was asking for, + plus more, and my personal statement was great. at least it should be. I did about 4 different drafts of that.

Oh, i see Darwin. yeah, well as cheeseman said, we have UCAS. Complicated, but ultimately easier. should that make much sense. We dont send essays either. we have to fill in this UCAS application form..with qualifications and what you are currently studying, plus a personal statement telling the unis why you are amazing and why they should let you in. UCAS then sends this off to the unis you have applied for (up to 6)...and then you get replies via UCAS....only goes to the seperate unis once you have your results and they then wriote to you themselves.
Hope that made sense. i find it fascinating how different countries work their education system

On my first day of a philosophy degree a lecturer was answering our questions and there was this woman nervous she'd have to start philosophising, like be the new Plato straight away. She said this to the lecturer and to console her he said, Don't worry, we're not looking for original philosophy per se. My friends and I went off to see if they had a pooltable on the grounds. It was nice to know from the first day that my idea of college being different from the dull information-retention/regurgitation drill of secondary school was an illusion so I didn't have to sweat not attending and I got the use of a kickass library for three years.

So what happens if you 'flunk' high school (I think I have the right terminology)?
Here we have UCAS, which is a central application board for all higher education institutions, which certainly makes it easier for applicants, and universities.

We send a separate application to each university/college that were interested in, with rare exception of places like the University of California where I think you can apply to multiple campuses with a single application. And there is no standardized application (they may all want different essays) and no policy for acceptance. And usually you're accepted to a college even before you finish high school, thus the last semester leading into the last summer where you do nothing but drink and try to get laid (warm up for your college years). |

It's a similar kind of system I guess Brian, first choices, backup choices etc., but it tends to be based on conditional offers, i.e. you have to attain certain grades to qualify.

i think there are a number of reasons why the system works on a tighter scale here.
one, as someone said earlier, you generally have to travel further, or may have to at least, and so need to make arrangements for that.
Also, do you apply directly to the uni, or is there a middle organisation, that deals witht he applications from students, and decisions from universities? that what we have here, and so they ahve to deal with thousands of applications, eetc.
We can not be accepted a place at a uni unless we have our grades - which most wont get til this sort of time. Ive known my grades since the end of June, as the course i did operates differently than A Levels.

this system confounds me. when i was in high school i applied early decision to a school (which means that you apply earlier, you'll hear by dec. 15, and if they accept you, you legally have to attend there) that had rolling admissions (they process all applications as they come in),and i knew my first choice for over a year, so my application for the fall 00 term went out in october 1999, and i knew exactly one week to the day later that i was accepted. I overnighted my response and deposit, and in 8 days i went from no college plans to a Duquesne U. student. But congrats Steve, Toeknee, Marsist and all others going off to university - i would give anything to go back.

im over the moon. ive just found out that my halls of residence are not only installing washers/dryers (no laundrette for me, but they have a 1 meg broadband for £60 a year.

Never studied there, sorry. Oh wait, I did, but only an evening class.
Yeah, I know its half decent - the business school is excellent - but I feel self-deprecation is the only way to go when faced with Scarla O's fancy Kings College malarkey.

yeah, it sounded pretty good. The first year i think will be bloody boring, as it seems to be more of the business side and stuff. but it should all be good. you get to do everything to do witht eh industry. you even get to do some recording and stuff.
so yeah. And i have a canadian tutor. heh.

Congrats everyone who got in to where they wanted to go.
I finished my college course with a distinction distinction merit - equivalent of an AAB at A level, basically.
I was two marks off a distinction distinction distinction - but i got lazy at the end of the year, and couldnt be bothered to boost it up.
Afterall, The course i wanted was only asking for an MMP. lol.
And Cheeseman, I think you should show more loyalty to the uni you both WORK and STUDIED at. tut tut. anyway, although its a bit below the radar, it has some very strong departments. Some very weak ones...but some very strong ones. And theres few unis that do the course im doing - especially as I wanted to go to uni in london.

i was really upset when i got my a-levels, i got an E in computing when i was on for a B at least. i must have flunked those final exams and my coursework was marked quite harsly i thought... anyway my ucas letter said i needed a C, so i was devastated, put off calling them most of the day, even though everyone said i should. finally called them and they were like "yeah, you're still coming to man met, we sent out your welcome pack yesterday" cheers!

i got an offer from glamorgan uni in wales today i should be starting next month.thing is i failed my a-levels but still got 2 out of 4 offers from the colleges i applied to.go figure

Seriously, the amount people complain about this sort of thing is beyond a joke. I guess the distances make a different, but universities generally have pretty good support systems and accommodation arrangements for that sort of thing. People are used to it, I suppose.

Why not have the exams earlier so that people know where they're going more than 1 month beforehand? We typically know for about 6 months where we're heading off to college. Of course, we generally have to move farther, so maybe it's a bigger deal in the US. |

It ties in with the exams here - the equivalent of a High School Diploma is A-levels taken age 18. Final exams are taken in June, results come through August, university term starts end of September.

It's peachy in the Central Valley. Hell, I have a peach tree in my backyard. |
