I just received an evite for drinks at a fun bar with some cool former co-workers in honor of a friend who is visiting from out of state.

The quandry: I adore everybody invited except a detestable woman I used to be friends with until I had enough and stopped talking to her and taking her shit. Nobody else likes her much, but we all worked together for a long time and people are nice and want to be inclusive.

Should I go and politely make the minimum small talk with the uber-bitch? Or should I blow off hanging with the rest of the group, which will otherwise be fun? I can get together with the guest of honor one on one... but I'd like to attend the drunken girls' night out ... but it will include that bitchy woman I can't stand.

Advice?

Thanks.

Now THAT doesn't make a lick of sense.

Nobody likes her but we all worked together (christ, I was her boss for an unbearable 9 months) and it's a get-together of all of us former co-workers.

Man, I am definitely taking a few hits off a joint beforehand. Thanks for helping me figure out my gameplan, Steve.

She sounds awful. Never really understood how people get like that.

Happy, erm, baking.

Off to bed now. I need my beauty sleep :(

Na, I'm more likely to have a strong discussion, but that's it. I probably get a bit louder and think I'm funnier. Eventually I just fall asleep, hopefully not before I get home.

But you'll be all mellow and relaxed. You might slip up and (Gasp!) be nice to her. Best stick to alcohol and pick a fight I reckon ;)

Oh, thaaaaat kind of baking! (that I've never heard of)

So the first thing I said I guess. You could put it in the cakes too though ;)

Does that ensure a good night out, or are you going to put laxative in the cakes?

Well it's all a bit complicated and probably quite boring for an outsider.

I'm going to be part of a similar night on Friday I have just discovered. Similar in the awkwardness anyway. It seems there has been an interesting turn of events within our group since I went on holiday. I can't leave them alone for five minutes.

Hope it went well Kiki.

just like you can't let fear control your life...you can't let bitches control your decisions. go, have fun. if it's not fun. leave. you don't have to go home, but just go somewhere where the fun is. stay as far away as possible because it'll increase the chances of having fun. if you plan to go and piss the bitch off because you want to show her how much you hate her, then i recommend staying home and listening to honeycomb instead.

unless it's the cat fight thing, then go.

someone needs to write a 'choose your own adventure' story for this.

I totally agree. I like to keep my work and personal life as separate as possible. I've lost jobs before because people/bosses found out that I played in a band (something I was very vocal about). I don't even mention that at all any more, the less assumptions co-workers make about you the better, that is the way I feel. And I DEFINITELY wouldn't want to be around my co-workers drunk.

but kathryn, in response to your question, I think you should just go and straight up ignore her or just speak to her as minimally as possible. If she ends up really pissing you off or annoying you more than you can deal with, just leave! (but drive safe if you've been drinking)

You really have, Froggy. My current co-workers are bags of fun on a night out, I wouldn't miss it.

How's that for a slice of fried gold?

Frog you are right on certain levels, though it depends entirely on what your relationship with them is like.

Well, imho the only real question is: is it really healthy to see current or former co-workers outside of work?

My answer is:

No.

Go. Why miss out on a good night for the sake of someone elses personal shortcomings? In my opinion life is too short for that.

What whore said basically. But go, even if you don't intend to do that. Nothing could be worse than letting someone you hate influence your decisions and social life.
