I indulge in my fuel-ish (har har) air conditioning addiction. I crank the suckers way up high and eventually put on a sweater.

How do you stay cool in hot weather?

I think you mean patently delicious!

Yes, it's 'patent'-ly ridiculous, Vovat! ;D
VoVat Posted - 08/18/2005 : 18:06:34
You know, that's not a bad idea. Maybe you could patent that!

Wear sunglasses with a special ice-spraying device in them. That way, you can stay cool in both senses of the word.
VoVat Posted - 08/12/2005 : 19:03:35
I'm not cool in ANY kind of weather.

And I hate sweating.

oh, really, that hot?

that's interesting to see what the weather is like so far away, thanks for the reply.

ANYway.....Darwin, I'm about at 103 myself, not too far from you. Lucky us, it's supposed to stay in the 'low hundreds' all week. something silly about that phrase 'low hundreds'

new_floop knows so much and is so wise.
He will guide us out of the wilderness and into the light.

I don't know, I've never read feminist theory. We should ask new_floop about that.

should I go back and delete it in case I'm objectifying myself?

I'm tempted to joke about Nic's post, but wouldn't that be objectifying her?

run cold water over my wrists and ankles but lately I'm just resorting to wearing as little as possible

I sleep during the day, for it's cooler at night. Why it's almost 5am. I wish I could go for a walk. but I have nowhere to be...

friday the train was packed, each car a 50ft lung. with the outside temp at 95' s and no AC i wanted to get off as soon as i got on. 25 minutes later i was free, no method just calm.
darwin Posted - 07/12/2005 : 20:50:51
It was 103 here (the Central Valley of CA) today.

I recommend a glass of freshly extracted carrot-cucumber juice to keep you cool in the hotest of weather.

How hot is it there, kathryn?

I just swam in an outdoor pool with a broken heater. The water was so frigid it felt like ice was cutting my body for a glorious hour. It was fabulous in this sweltering heat.

run your wrists under cold water for a bit

if it's too terrible, get naked, grab some ice, and don't move for a while

I really hate suffocating heat. I try to stay as near to an AC as possible in summer.

Yeah, I heard that hot tea actually cools you down before. I think it balances your temperature, or something like that. Something that I don't fully remember, obviously!

It's real hot here at the moment. I was dripping sweat yesterday!

I like to lurk in my cellar - lovely and cool but also a bit damp and smelly. I don't think it ever gets higher than about 55 degrees F.

It's not a slam dunk perfect explanation (for example some common spices so far have not been shown to be antibacterial), but does seem to be part of the story.
kathryn Posted - 07/11/2005 : 12:55:29
That's fascinating, darwin. Honestly, the things I learn on this forum. Thanks.

In India, the further south you go in the country (and therefore the hotter the climate), the spicier and hotter the regional cuisine becomes. So, whereas in the North you get a very plain and mild flavour, in the South (e.g. Madras), you scoop chillis onto the food wherever you can.
I've never quite got my head round the logic to this, but I suppose it must make sense somehow.

How's that for a slice of fried gold?

One explanation is:
Tropical climates have more bacteria. Some spices are anti-bacterial. Thus, people in hot climates tend to use more spices. Paul Sherman (a behavioral ecologist) has written several papers on the subject.

The bodys homeostatic controls would start to try to cool you down if you took a hot shower and would help in making the impression of cooler when you got out of the hot shower.

I think, it's been a long time since biology that involved whole organisms.

Either way in the hot weather I sit indoors with light cotton PJ's and a thin vest and the fan on. Full.

Okay this I can see, but ultimately haven't you just raised your body temperature if you took a full hot shower?

It all sounds like everyone's granny: when its cold out, you should take off your coat inside to 'feel the benefit' when you go back out.
