I indulge in my fuel-ish (har har) air conditioning addiction. I crank the suckers way up high and eventually put on a sweater.

How do you stay cool in hot weather?

I sleep nude with the AC down to 62 and four blankets on me. It's totally wasteful. But it must be done.

In India, the further south you go in the country (and therefore the hotter the climate), the spicier and hotter the regional cuisine becomes. So, whereas in the North you get a very plain and mild flavour, in the South (e.g. Madras), you scoop chillis onto the food wherever you can.
I've never quite got my head round the logic to this, but I suppose it must make sense somehow.

Well the bodys mechanisms to combat the extreme heat include sweating, spicy hot food makes you sweat.

It's pretty logical if you think about it.

Don't give me your fancy 'logic'. It doesn't make you feel cooler does it? I sweat like a pig, just makes me feel hotter.

Which is why I don't like to eat spicy foods in the heat. They make you sweat more. Whereas cold water and ice cream cool you off.

The feeling of jumping in the pool or leaping into the sea/ocean after baking yourself to your threshold in the summer sun must be one of the best things ever.

Biologically though Kathryn it's a quick fix wheras the whole purpose of sustained sweating is to cool you down. Sweat on the skin evaporates, and this cools the body.

Like a pig eh Simon? hot.

My husband always says take a hot shower because when you get out the air around you will feel cooler.

Makes no bloody sense to me.

Makes perfect sense that does, if you get out of a cold shower the first thing you notice is the heat, if you have a shower hotter than air temperature the air is relatively cool feeling. I find cold shower then crank the heat up just before I am about to get out works well.

It all sounds like everyone's granny: when its cold out, you should take off your coat inside to 'feel the benefit' when you go back out.

Okay this I can see, but ultimately haven't you just raised your body temperature if you took a full hot shower?

The bodys homeostatic controls would start to try to cool you down if you took a hot shower and would help in making the impression of cooler when you got out of the hot shower.

I think, it's been a long time since biology that involved whole organisms.

Either way in the hot weather I sit indoors with light cotton PJ's and a thin vest and the fan on. Full.

One explanation is:
Tropical climates have more bacteria. Some spices are anti-bacterial. Thus, people in hot climates tend to use more spices. Paul Sherman (a behavioral ecologist) has written several papers on the subject.

It's not a slam dunk perfect explanation (for example some common spices so far have not been shown to be antibacterial), but does seem to be part of the story.

I like to lurk in my cellar - lovely and cool but also a bit damp and smelly. I don't think it ever gets higher than about 55 degrees F.

The Dutch taught our football teams to drink hot tea at half time to cool down (plus the sugar gives you energy).

Yeah, I heard that hot tea actually cools you down before. I think it balances your temperature, or something like that. Something that I don't fully remember, obviously!

run your wrists under cold water for a bit

if it's too terrible, get naked, grab some ice, and don't move for a while

I really hate suffocating heat. I try to stay as near to an AC as possible in summer.

I just swam in an outdoor pool with a broken heater. The water was so frigid it felt like ice was cutting my body for a glorious hour. It was fabulous in this sweltering heat.

I recommend a glass of freshly extracted carrot-cucumber juice to keep you cool in the hotest of weather.

run cold water over my wrists and ankles but lately I'm just resorting to wearing as little as possible
