Posted - 07/10/2005 : 14:24:19 I seem to always discover music late, sometimes decades late. I only recently discovered their music. I think it rocks. I picked up Automatic, Stoned and Dethroned, and their B-sides because those were the CDs that were used at my record store. I'll probably pick up the rest of their records.

Coachella Secret Show: Jesus and Mary Chain at The Glass House the Night Before Coachella
A few years back you might remember when the Pixies did a "secret" show at Pomona's Glass House the night before their big performance at Coachella. Well this year the reformed Jesus and Mary Chain are the special guests at the Glass House on Thursday, April 26.
Tickets were made available a few hours ago and LAist picked up a pair just to make sure everything was kosher. And hey it's the real deal, so if you like the dark, poppy, barbed-wired kisses of the Brothers Reid, snap up your tickets before its too late. The Glass House isn't all that big.
And if you live in Pomona the Glass House Box Office opens in about, uh One minute so get down there.
Also on sale this morning, that cute little Brit girl who everyone just wants to kiss on the cheek and bum a smoke from - Lily Allen at the Wiltern on Tuesday, May 15.
Horray!

Wednesday, February 21, 2007 The Jesus and Mary Chain Cometh!
Good news for audiophiles and any music fans with a sense of history: The Jesus and Mary Chain have booked their first dates in almost a decade. While this may not energize as many as it should, it really should. This band helped create so many sounds that it isn't funny; everyone from My Bloody Valentine and Mogwai to the Pixies and Interpol owes them something. Better yet, Morphizm's pals at Charm School scored us a shorty with Jesus honcho Jim Reid about the whole deal. Read it and smile:
1. Why are you doing the show now? "Well, I would say 'Why not?' There are many reasons really. Firstly it's taken this long for me and William to get to a point where it would be realistic to do it, and to some degree each of us assumed the other wouldn't be interested, and it was only after we talked about it that we realised this. Also Coachella were very persistent."
2. The last show was in 1998? "Yes, the last Mary Chain gig was in 1998 and was such a bloody awful mess, too much drink, too many drugs, nobody seeing eye to eye on anything and the band just blew up, and I suppose you could say this is another good reason for our reformation, cause that was no way for the Mary Chain to end."
3. William lives in LA and you live in Devon? "You can imagine the problems this presents."
4. Who else is in the band? "On bass it's Phil King, on drums it's Loz Colbert, and on second guitar is Mark Crozer, and of course myself and William."
5. Will there be more shows and an album? "I really don't know. Maybe. I think we would like to and we're looking at another show or two."
6. Are William and yourself working on solo albums? "Yes, both are at the recording stage at the moment, and both will hopefully be out later in the year."
Can you say, product placement? It's a different time indeed. The '80s and '90s were halcyon days compared to ours, but then again I was saying the same thing about the '60s and '70s in the '80s and '90s, so the more things change the more they remain the same. Either way, the world is better with Jesus and Mary in it. For more info on the new developments and tour, check out the band's official site.

Posted - 12/05/2006 : 10:15:38 My personal fav by JAMC is Honey's Dead. Pick that sucker up. It tends to be hard to find, at least when I went hunting for it. They seem to be getting popular now so it may be easier.
Pick it up, it's an amazing album. Very very very good.
P.S. Their covers of Surfin' USA and Tower of Song are brilliant.

Posted - 11/30/2006 : 05:08:40 I think Just Like Honey sounds like the majority of songs on Psychocandy, which creates continuity if nothing else. I like it. So many bands have ripped off that drum pattern and sound, JAMC's overall sound, image, you name it.

Oh, wait, this is supposed to be about Jesus and Mary Chain. I heard a song at the end credits of the movie LOST IN TRANSLATION. It had reverbed drums unlike anything I had ever heard before; the production was so original. I thought it was Kevin Shields at the time, but my brother later told me it was the Jesus and Mary Chain. Great song.
yeah, just saw the film again, great song

'Just Like Honey'. I don't like it that much, but I must say it was a perfect choice to close the movie.

By the way TR, I've been able to download four Souled American tunes. I've heard "Notes Campfire", "This Old House", "Make me Laugh, Make me Cry", and the instrumental "Not Over". I really, really dig everything so far and would like to buy "Fe", but I'm having a hard time trying to find it online. Any suggestions? I've read they don't play a whole lot of gigs anymore, but will play occasionally in Chicago, which is fairly close to where I live. I'd love to see 'em live.

great to hear you enjoy souled american ! the tunes you have are pretty cool, especially "make me laugh, make me cry", me thinks. i guess it will be hard to get a CD.i have "Fe", "Flubber", "Frozen" on vinyl. i could make you very oldfashioned tapes and send it via mail, if you like. would be my very pleasure. lucky guy, if you really catch them live.
this week i will try to get stan ridgeway, together with honeycomb and the the latest leonhard cohen.

Posted - 07/12/2005 : 03:03:55 their debut was and is fantastic, however they became a parody of themselves, the vocals grate and they ended up trying too hard.

You probably already found the april skies web site.
Coast to Coast, Bullet Lovers and Never Saw It Coming are my favourite songs from Stoned & Dethroned.
They perform a great cover of "New Kind of Kicks" by the Cramps. I think it is an unreleased track but available on live wire. Worth a listen.
Ever attend a snakedrive Mr. Grieves?

Posted - 07/11/2005 : 10:59:59 I only have their singles collection but it's very good. The Raveonettes completely ripped them off on their debut full album, 'Chain Gang Of Love', but in a good way. If you like J&TMC then you will no doubt like that album too.
Don't believe the type!

Posted - 07/11/2005 : 08:48:54 Try Bullet Lovers from Stoned and Dethroned.
Good acoustic guitar.
They have a very good cover of Vegetable Man; Catchfire, Honey's Dead are among my favourites.
Love the psychedelic guitars, reverberations and understated mix.
Did you find the prepositional flaw Mr. Grieves?

Posted - 07/11/2005 : 06:23:03 I just recently got into J&MC as well I picked up Stoned & Dethroned a couple of years ago, it's on the mellower side but I definitely dig it. I just recently got Sound Of Speed because my favorite Jesus & Mary Chain song to date (Snakedriver) is the 1st track on there. "I've got syphilitic hetero friends in every part of town" "The photographs of god I bought have almost fade away" GREAT lyrics...
I'm a big fan of their noisier guitar sounds...plus the layering of acoustic with noise/psychedelic guitar meshed together. It just sounds great. |

Posted - 07/11/2005 : 04:26:40 Yeah Michael, I think you summed it up pretty well. Most of their tunes seem to be arranged around two chords or so, however, they rarley ever sound that simple or repetitive. I also agree that "Munki" isn't on par with their prior efforts, however, it is a fairly long album (16 tracks or so?) so there still are some gems in there. Scruvs, I'd say it's a safe bet to go with "Honeys Dead" and "Sound of Speed" next. Maybe save "Munki" until you've exhausted all the others.

Posted - 07/11/2005 : 03:40:17 psychocandy is funny, but i agree, you can't listen more than once. try their later stuff.
i think the great thing about the JAMC is their simplicity. i don't know much of music, but i guess 85 % of their tunes are built around the same 2 chords. and still most of it sounds diverse. i like stoned&dethroned and honey's dead most, i guess. IMHO, mood and lyrics were alyways exactly on the fine line between being absolutely ridicoluos & really sad&depressing. take "darklands": "i'm going to dark, to talk in rhyme with my chaotic soul / as sure as life means nothing and all things end in nothing and heaven i think is too close to hell"...and so on. isn't it super-kitsch ? their last album "munky" was somehow crappy. william was still the self-proclaimed loner, not very convincing very predictable after all those years, and jim got into simple&mich more boring "entertaining" fun-rock'n'roll. their trip-hop-experiments were pretty much out of context too.
but however, they deserve respect for what they did and that they finally split.
martha, what do you think ?

Posted - 07/11/2005 : 03:25:47 I have Psychocandy, but the few times I've listened to it, it's genuinely given me a headache. I can see the appeal of the band, but I've just never been able to get into it. Although I haven't heard anything much later than Psychocandy, I wonder if perhaps I'd enjoy that more - I like Head On and April Skies, I don't know if thats representative.
