Just a question a friend who's in Central London just now posed. Which ones seem the most competent in gathering news and presenting it? Are any more susceptible to censorship than others?

Do they have political agendas which come through in their presentation of the news?

In your opinion, which are the best, and which are the worst? I guess this refers to both internet sites and TV/radio news.

I don't really pay as much attention to the news as I should. I think I get most of my information from other people, and sometimes the Internet or local news radio.

I was all out of luck, like a duck that died. I was all out of juice, like a moose denied.

But isn't an editor responsible for the content of the newspaper and consequently its circulation? If the sales of a newspaper went down, wouldn't the editor get it in the neck, and have to think about the newspapers direction?

If I'm wrong, who's responsible for these areas?

And it pays really well, too. It's a good place to work. And a great paper to read, I agree!

Kathryn...WWN is a newspaper! It's the best one in the whole wide world! I just bought the current issue at the grocery store. The front page story claims that apparantley they found Noah's 2nd ark in the Faroe Islands and it held unicorns, centaurs, dragons, and winged lions!

That was the point I tried to make -- that journalists working for dailies are scrambling
to beat TV and they end up regurgitating biased opinions instead of taking the time to investigate what is beneath the surface. You're supposed to ferret out facts and report them, not be a mouthpiece for one extreme faction and its opposing group.

Balance does not belong in news reporting. Journalism should not be about giving both sides a chance to broadcast their bias; it's about reporting the truth.

Newspapers I feel are inherently biased, and much more so than any of the aforementioned news organisations. They have to be to sell newspapers, they have much more competition (I think). An opinion or stance will appeal to many, many people.

So many people confident in the BBC... a little nerve-wracking.

You've got foxnews, msnbc, CNN, BBC, coworkers, talkshow hosts, the Internet, etc. Most people don't get their information from one source (some do suppose the majority of the US does in order to make their point ring more true), but conciously/subconciously collect from several of these and others not listed.

I can't name my favorite source, but I tend to reach conclusions after my exposure of Foxnews, NPR, and the internet.

I am guessing that your statement was tongue in cheek, TT. But it brings up an important point regarding journalism today:

Balance does not belong in news reporting. Journalism should not be about giving both sides a chance to broadcast their bias; it's about reporting the truth.

Let me check with the BBC. Yes, you're right, they say it will never be the time for holding them to any standard whatsoever.
Newo Posted - 07/07/2005 : 10:01:47
Is this a first? Iīm with Erebus on the BBC thing, everyone thinks itīs news and itīs just the entertainment wing of the security services. Itīs quite obvious from the sanitised versions of the Gulf massacres they showed as to exactly where they stand.

I forgot to say, for me it's the BBC too. When there was all the kerfuffle about Andrew Gilligan, Dr David Kelly and whether the BBC were politically motivated in attacking the government, I always felt the BBC were telling the truth.
My wife, however, accused me of being naive (which I may be) and blinded by the BBC's reputation.

BBC radio for me in America.

Since cable TV came along with up-to-the-minute info, newspapers have been scrambling to stay relevant, and most have chucked their ethics and commitment to accuracy and facts.
