So it's that time of year again, when the British media goes into overdrive and Tim Henman feels the weight of the universe on his shoulders, thus blowing his big chance for a major tennis tournament.

Will there be joy on Henman Hill, tears on Rusedski Ridge and even hope on Murray Field (see what they did there;)?

Non-Brits, can you stand the rampant jingoism associated with this (Brits too, I guess). Is it just as bad in the other majors?

So who are the contenders? Federer looks like a shoe-in for the mens, with only Roddick or some unknown 7 ft Balkan having a chance, but what about the women's title?

Where are the Williams sisters? Can Sharapova defend her title, or will Clijsters, Henin-Hardenne or Davenport come up with the goods?
Predictions welcome, and a gold star for the winners:)

When, I presume, grunting and fist pumping would be welcomed?

I hate Sharapova. I am so glad she lost, and I'm glad it Venus who did it. I hate her grunts and I hate the way she pumps her fist (when other players do it, it doesnt bother me). I can't stand her.

Federer is looking awesome against Hewitt. Doesn't matter what Hewitt does, there's just no way through. *hopes to jinx Federer*

Grosjean the other day was fantastic - i really wished he had won the match again Roddick.
tobafett Posted - 06/30/2005 : 14:08:53
the williams/sharapova match was a good one. lots of baseline volley...nice match.

Little Black Francis Posted - 06/30/2005 : 13:17:26
I really like Davenport, but it seems like she usually gets her ass kicked in finals

It's womens semi-finals day at Wimbledon, here's the draw:

(1) Lindsay Davenport (US) v (3) Amelie Mauresmo (Fr)
(14) Venus Williams (US) v (2) Maria Sharapova (Rus)

I guess a Davenport/Sharapova final seems likely. Mauresmo has a fairly poor record vs Davenport and Williams has been relatively poor this season, although she showed flashes of her old form in the quarters against Pierce. Sharapova is unbeaten in about 21 games on grass, so would seem to be the favourite. Mauresmo is the only one in the semis who hasn't won Wimbledon previously.

So, Davenport in 3 sets and Sharapova in 2.

What can I say....Federer was better....

:(
Levitated Posted - 06/29/2005 : 11:35:43
Damn!! Gonzalez lost. Is Federer unbeatable or something?. I was told that Gonzalez didn't play a bad match but, you know, it was against Federer :( Not a chance I supposse
Homers_pet_monkey Posted - 06/29/2005 : 05:44:54
I'd go with that except I am not sure Hewitt will win in straight sets.

I also think the Nalb'ian/Jo'sson tie could go either way over 5 sets.

My picks:
Federer (3 sets to 1)
Hewitt (straight sets)
Nalbandian (3 sets to 2)
Roddick (3 sets to 1)
Homers_pet_monkey Posted - 06/29/2005 : 05:36:41
No chance.

Scarla O Posted - 06/29/2005 : 05:36:06

I think Nalbandian might beat Johansson.
Llamadance Posted - 06/29/2005 : 05:04:15
Should have upped this for the Women's Quarters, but here's the draw for the men's:

(1) Roger Federer (Swi) v (21) Fernando Gonzalez (Chi)
(3) Lleyton Hewitt (Aus) v (26) Feliciano Lopez (Spa)
(12) Thomas Jo'sson (Swe) v (18) David Nalb'ian (Arg)
(9) Sebastien Grosjean (Fra) v (2) Andy Roddick (USA)

So Federer, Lopez, Johansson and Roddick are my picks. Lopez is looking good, but I'm maybe foolhardy to go against Hewitt. C'mon the underdog!

Sorry ccuadros, but I can't see Gonzalez beating Federer.

He's just making excuses. She didn't seem to limp at all during the parts I watched. I think what he meant was that she didn't train enough because she is getting rich and lazy and thought she could get by on talent alone.

Watched the replay of Serena losing today. I don't think I have ever seen someone so out of shape unless it was Daly at a golf tournament. She practically had to hold herself up against the wall during the end of the 2nd set. I also can't believe the tensile strength of her outfit. It looked like she was about to explode out of her top!

heckuva match, i thought...back-n-forth in the last set...nice to watch.

too bad for henman. it finally occurred to me who he looks like (to me anyway):

Bruce Spence
Llamadance Posted - 06/23/2005 : 08:56:15
Henman just didn't look up for it.
The Russian who beat him has a great American accent

C'mon Andy Murray.!!

Yep but he lost today :(
Our tennis players are like one-hit wonder bands.
Marcelo Rios was #1 ATP tennis player in 1998 but no grand slams
Nicolas Massu won 2 golden medals but no grand slams and #9 ATP
Fernando Gonzalez ?? who knows, perhaps one or two grand slams :)

Don't forget Nicolas Massu!!
