Does anyone else think Gimme Fiction is total shit or is it just me? It is such a lazy follow up to Kill the Moonlight and Girls Can Tell. The songs are boring, they all sound the same, i can't even get past track 5. I'm so glad it was illegally downloaded and given to me so that i didn't have to waste $15 on this totally horrible compact disc. Fuck Britt Daniel. Fuck him for putting on one of the best shows i've ever seen and then following that up with a horrible, horrible record.

Having recently had this disk on roadtrip rotation, I was shocked, shocked mind you, to find this tread upon my return. So I asked myself, am I crazy? (Yes, I mean crazier than usual.) Upon a fresh, newly skeptical listen, I proclaim "No Way!" The only tracks I'm not too hip on are Sister Jack and They Never Got You. I quite like Monsieur Valentine, Mathematical Mind,I Summon You, and Was It You. Is it the best Spoon yet? Time will tell but likely not, but it is true Spoon if you're into it. Also, that bonus disk plays well too.

Brian, I felt almost the same way when I first got it. Like My Mathematical Mind just keeps going and going and more and more of the same and is he trying. I never had a problem with the vocals, though. But I've since listened to it more and actually quite like it, though I wouldn't put it in the ballpark of his previous works.

Rita with such lofty recommendation from you I'd be mad not to go for it.
speedy_m Posted - 05/31/2005 : 15:24:05
Well if you like this one go with it. But there is a definite progression to their records. The first is more lo-fi, Pixies-esque rockers. The second is like that, but much "sounds like Spoon" rather than "sounds like the Pixies". The third is just plain cool, mellowing out a bit adding piano. The third almost totally drops the guitar in favour of the piano. The common theme is the great use of space and great melodies.

So do I start with this one or elsewhere?

My Mathmatical Mind is the Oasisy one - it starts that way and I can't listen all the way through to see if it stops doing it.
speedy_m Posted - 05/31/2005 : 15:19:30
I do beleive you will like their other albums. They are all great.

I'll try to remember that.

The Beast and Dragon, Adored is the track that first hooked me onto this by the way.

You should get the Tampax Multi-Pak.

Don't be they're a tough one to get into - you either love them or hate them. Their first album, Horse of The Dog, is their best and heaviest work (though I've recently been told I appear to have trouble distinguishing between heavy and light).
speedy_m Posted - 05/31/2005 : 15:01:38
You really should be.

I d/l a few things by them and I didn't really dig them and then I felt bad and then I didn't know what to say and then I didn't reply and then I felt bad. Luv ya!

No I'm not. I really should be shouldn't I.

And I'd almost forgotten about the whole never-happened Matchbox exchange!
speedy_m Posted - 05/31/2005 : 14:57:48
Nicole are you on Slsk? I'll hook you up (in exchange for the never-happened Matchbox exchange).

Brian, you've got to suck up the Spoon hating and come to Siren Fest. They just got announced on the bill. Free music = Sir Rock's presence.

Thank you but maybe that pic was a freak camera incident.

Infinite Pet is evil. I'm buying this tomorrow.

Oasisy moment? What? Where? Don't look back in anger, baby. And don't ignore the pants comment, that was gold and it got you totally hot, don't deny it.

Speedy the did have an Oasisy moment where I nearly clawed my own ears off but they're redeeming themselves again at the moment.

speedy_m Posted - 05/31/2005 : 14:46:04
Nicole, you've won a new place in my heart.

Wait, sorry, not heart. Pants.

Listening to I turn My Camera On now - I love this. In fact it's looking like the funky hot little numbers are the ones for me.

Listening to the streaming banner thingy - just had The Two Side of Monsieur Valentine
speedy_m Posted - 05/31/2005 : 14:37:19
Holy shit, Spoon and GBV, that's like my ultimate dream show.... my God I am jealous right now. I have a video of Spoon covering "Subspace Biographies" (a Robert Pollard song). Just awesome.

I like that - prepared myself to hate it, but I'm really liking that.

i saw Spoon open for GBV a long time ago. i thought they were great so i got the album, which wasn't as good as it was live. to me.

would it be a fair argument to say they're a better band live than they are recorded?

i still stand by "spoon-full of feces" .. it's long-winded and wordy, but it makes more of a visual (and olfactory) impression
speedy_m Posted - 05/31/2005 : 14:17:22
Should have played off the album title like I did.

Ex. "Gimme a break, they suck."

or "More like, Kill the Melody"

or "A Series of Poorly Constructed Songs"
