Hey, I just read on CNN that the BBC has updated the Dr. Who series.

http://www.cnn.com/2005/SHOWBIZ/TV/05/26/apontv.dr.who.ap/index.html

We used to watch Dr. Who as a family growing up. I loved it! It played on PBS. And....I was even a member of the Dr. Who Fan Club (actually still have my membership card somewhere at my parent's house.

Has anyone seen the new episodes? The new season is being shown in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Italy, but BBC America has no plans to air it for the time being.

'Torchwood' still hasn't finished shooting, but it should be an excellent show. My girlfriend is an extra on several episodes, actually.

Get ready for a Doctor Who celebration!

The BBC plots a spectacular concert in aid of Children In Need…

[09 Oct 2006 5:42pm]

Since last year's extra Who footage caused a sensation on the Children In Need show, plenty of people have been wondering whether something similar would happen this year.

While it's not yet known whether we'll see a snippet between The Bride (Catherine Tate) and David Tenant's Doctor, the Beeb are certainly planning a small Who-related event to benefit the appeal

Oh, it's not much - just a gigantic, star-laden concert that will feature the BBC National Orchestra of Wales performing chunks of Murray Gold's themes set to a selection of visuals from the series at Cardiff's Millennium Centre. You might recall that the Centre features in the likes of Dalek and Boom Town, and will be invaded for the night by Daleks, Cyberman and, er, Russell T Davies with a microphone. The show's executive producer will be dragging current Who David Tenant and Murray Gold on stage with him for a Q&A session.

The concert will be recorded by BBC Radio Wales to be aired later and will also be filmed by the Doctor Who Confidential team for a special documentary likely to be timed with the arrival of the second Christmas special. "We are delighted to join forces with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales in aid of BBC Children in Need," Davies blabbed in a press release. "The evening promises to be an audio-visual spectacular. I can't wait to hear Murray Gold's extraordinary scores live on stage." And he really talks like that all the time, you know. No, honestly. He genuinely says things like "The evening promises to be an audio-visual spectacular" out loud.

It all kicks off at 6:30pm on Sunday 19 November. Tickets will cost between £10 and £20, with half price deals for those under 16. Ticket prices will include a donation to BBC Children in Need and the official programme will also have proceeds going to the BBC Children in Need Appeal. Tickets can be bought and booked directly from the Wales Millennium Centre from 20 October 2006, via their website here or by phoning 08700 40 2000.

I'm too young for it anyway, but I never liked "Dr. Who". The old "Battlestar Galactica" was ok though.

I have been meaning to bring this thread back up. We finally have the first season where I am in the US!!! Dr. Who has such a special place in my heart. So far I think Eccleston is doing a great job, but I understand what you mean. He is a bit moody, but it isn't bugging me at this point.

I am really curious now to see Tennant and the cyberman! So glad to hear the series seems to be doing quite well.
Carl Posted - 05/16/2006 : 10:01:51
The new cybermen look pretty cool.

zub_the_goat Posted - 05/16/2006 : 05:26:05
I havent really been able to watch most of the new series, due to having to fight my housemates for the remote, although when ive seen it, i kinda prefer the online games and fake websites the bbc keeps setting up
Holy Fingers Posted - 05/15/2006 : 18:23:42
I believe the original Dr. Who series was better, and its delightful tackiness made it so. I must admit that I have seen only two episodes of the newer version, and was slightly dissappointed.

Indeed, I'm not being a smartass or anyhting.

Actually, I do like Dr.Who...I just bought the SFX Dr. Who magazine special recently!

Internet sarcasm just doesn't come across properly sometimes, so I just take everything seriously.

[EDIT]The sarcasm probably came across to everyone else, just not me!

sorry, I was taking the piss. I guessed you weren't an SF fan. Technically, they are both Science Fantasy writers, rather than Science Fiction. [/geek]

The reason I found the French girl fireplace thingy corny was because I was wondering why no-one spoke French, then I heard the doctor guy say that the tardis automatically translates wherever you go. Ah well, of course it does, silly me.

Really?! That doesn't reduce the corn factor, though!!

BTW, the Star Wars original editions will have the 'new' verisons on the second disc, rather than special features. Rip off!

I only saw The Girl In The Fireplace, thought it was a bit corny. I missed the 40th anniversary return of the Cybermen episode (with Roger Llyod-Pack!). You can download commentaries from http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/, which is a cool idea.

BTW, mentioning Star Wars....Lucasfilm recently announced that the original, un-tampered-with trilogy will be released as 2-disc special editions in September. Lucas said he'd never release them, but there you go. Fans have been itching for these for years.

I've enjoyed the new Doctor Who very much. Neil Tennant is better than Eccleston as the Doctor. I do think he over-acts very slightly sometimes, though, which irritates me a little bit. But then, it is aimed at kids, which, bizarrely, a lot of people can't seem to grasp.

I wonder how they're going to get out of the Cyberman situation!

Llamadance Posted - 05/14/2006 : 14:11:28
I think Tennant has the potential to be ranked up there with Baker & Troughton

Tenant and Eccleston are okay but they're not a patch on some of the great men who have taken on the role, most notably Patrick Troughton, John Pertwee and Colin Baker.

Star wars is shit. There I said it.

A pig or a goat well, they wouldn’t let you be mistreated

fbc Posted - 05/14/2006 : 12:38:46
I've only seen a few clips and I much prefer Tennant in the role, not that I don't like Eccleston. I thought Dr Who seemed a little too cheesy for him, but I only base that on the fact I've always enjoyed his acting in gritty dramas. His acting in the Who was similar, but come on. It's Doctor Who. Like Cheeseman said, It's really not supposed to be taken altogether seriously, it's a bit of fun.

sorry, wasnt directly comparing it to the new star wars, i just enjoyed Dr Who more, and it was done on a smaller budget with shittier effects, that probably says more about me/the film than doctor Who though.

The new series will be Neil Tennant, which would be pretty good I think.
