Hey, I just read on CNN that the BBC has updated the Dr. Who series.

http://www.cnn.com/2005/SHOWBIZ/TV/05/26/apontv.dr.who.ap/index.html

We used to watch Dr. Who as a family growing up. I loved it! It played on PBS. And....I was even a member of the Dr. Who Fan Club (actually still have my membership card somewhere at my parent's house.

Has anyone seen the new episodes? The new season is being shown in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Italy, but BBC America has no plans to air it for the time being.

Really? What don't you like about it?

I was hoping they could revive the spirit of the show from the Tom Baker days. I suppose that is asking too much though....

Homers is wrong, the new one is great and has got better and better throughout the season. It started off a bit twee, with Eccleston not really sure how to play Dr. Who, but I think he's really improved. Billie Piper as the assistant is miles better than I thought she would be.

Sure, there are some dodgy monster special effects, but the last three episodes especially have been excellent.

Some? Try everyone single one.

Perhaps shit is a tad harsh but it's really not very good in my opinion. So I am not wrong, it's just my opinion.

Hey thanks for your thoughts! I am going to find someway to check out these episodes. Dodgy special effects? That was one of the things I actually really loved about the episodes from the 80s.

Yeah but that was OK back then, now it's just bad unless it's meant as comedy. I guess it's good to laugh AT though.

Perhaps wrong was a tad harsh.

Still, I like it, and it has improved. My three year old daughter loves it (which may back up your thoughts) which shows that in some way it is similar to older series.

I dunno, there are purists who reckon it'll never return to its former glories, but it just couldn't stand still. And even if you're not keen, it's still miles better than the shit sitcoms and saturday variety shows that get churned out with all the thought and innovation of an ant.

I'm with the dancing llama here, I think it's pretty good. It's really not supposed to be taken altogether seriously, it's a bit of fun (*slaps thighs*)

The new series will be Neil Tennant, which would be pretty good I think.

i've only watched a couple of episodes, and have very little recolection of any other doctors, but i think eccleston manages to do a pretty good, eccentric, slightly confused doctor...i like the new series anyway..i'd rather they concentrated on storylines-that are admittedly blatently nicked than special effects unlike mr cgi lucas

Oh don't even try and compare Doctor Who with Star Wars and I'm far from an uber-fan (haven't even seen the new one).

sorry, wasnt directly comparing it to the new star wars, i just enjoyed Dr Who more, and it was done on a smaller budget with shittier effects, that probably says more about me/the film than doctor Who though.

Anybody watching the new series with David Tennant? I think he's excellent. He seems to have a better mix of light-heartedness and gravitas than Eccleston. The plots are pretty good too.....and last night, the Cybermen returned \o/

I've only seen a few clips and I much prefer Tennant in the role, not that I don't like Eccleston. I thought Dr Who seemed a little too cheesy for him, but I only base that on the fact I've always enjoyed his acting in gritty dramas. His acting in the Who was similar, but come on. It's Doctor Who. Like Cheeseman said, It's really not supposed to be taken altogether seriously, it's a bit of fun.

Tenant and Eccleston are okay but they're not a patch on some of the great men who have taken on the role, most notably Patrick Troughton, John Pertwee and Colin Baker.

Star wars is shit. There I said it.

I think Tennant has the potential to be ranked up there with Baker & Troughton

I've enjoyed the new Doctor Who very much. Neil Tennant is better than Eccleston as the Doctor. I do think he over-acts very slightly sometimes, though, which irritates me a little bit. But then, it is aimed at kids, which, bizarrely, a lot of people can't seem to grasp.

I wonder how they're going to get out of the Cyberman situation!

I only saw The Girl In The Fireplace, thought it was a bit corny. I missed the 40th anniversary return of the Cybermen episode (with Roger Llyod-Pack!). You can download commentaries from http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/, which is a cool idea.

BTW, mentioning Star Wars....Lucasfilm recently announced that the original, un-tampered-with trilogy will be released as 2-disc special editions in September. Lucas said he'd never release them, but there you go. Fans have been itching for these for years.

It was awesome. Tennant and Madame Pompadour are seeing each other IRL.

Anyone read any David Gemmell or Raymond E. Feist? Pixiestu?

Really?! That doesn't reduce the corn factor, though!!

BTW, the Star Wars original editions will have the 'new' verisons on the second disc, rather than special features. Rip off!

I didn't find it corny...but that was supposed to be an informational tidbit, not any kind of corniness reducing device.

It's not as if Lucas needs the cash, ffs.

I'm not much of a book person. I'm not a massive sci-fi fan anyway (they are both sci-fi writers aren't they?) so that probably explains why I'm not a Dr Who or Star Wars fan.

The reason I found the French girl fireplace thingy corny was because I was wondering why no-one spoke French, then I heard the doctor guy say that the tardis automatically translates wherever you go. Ah well, of course it does, silly me.

sorry, I was taking the piss. I guessed you weren't an SF fan. Technically, they are both Science Fantasy writers, rather than Science Fiction. [/geek]

Internet sarcasm just doesn't come across properly sometimes, so I just take everything seriously.

[EDIT]The sarcasm probably came across to everyone else, just not me!
